Footballers (in 99% of the cases that is) presentation

Hi there BG, AL from Portugal here,

i noticed that you arranged defaultsort in footballers quite often, but left tell you this: these guys have a different approach of their own, they should not follow the common WP guidelines (like in the case i will document below), and that has been pretty much agreed on at the pertinent discussions in the football community.

See for example Jacobo Sanz Ovejero: he's known in the football word not as S(ANZ) nor O(VEJERO), but J(ACOBO), his first name. Hence, his defaultsort (well i add to that the persondata, but the def'ort - which is let's say the "search engine" for people here - is essential) should be the letter J, not S or O.

Please let's reach a compromise on this one, at least the guys at the football "commission" already have. Keep up the great work, and (belatedly) happy 2013! --AL (talk) 23:13, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

There was discussion and it was decided upon that for Brazilian footballers known by their first name, they should be sorted on their firstname. I'm not aware of any other discussion on footballers, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any. At the moment, I go by what is said in WP:NAMESORT, thus Portuguese people are sorted on their paternal surname.
If you feel this needs to be changed so Portuguese footballers are sorted the same, I'll need to see a discussion where consensus was reached. I'll then change WP:NAMESORT.
Setting DEFAULTSORT does nothing to search engines. It affects how the articles are sorted in categories. Bgwhite (talk) 03:21, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • I don't belong to WP:FOOTY anymore, and cannot remember when the discussion was held. All i can remember is that it was agreed that PORTUGUESE and SPANISH footballers were supposed to have the same "treatment", because many many many guys in those countries often are addressed by either first or nickname. Cheers. --AL (talk) 19:00, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

You are full of surprices!

Great thanks for your help with the mono/wine bugs! -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:26, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

BG19bot bug report

Please ignore if this has been brought up earlier and fixed. Here the bot messed up the reference header. Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 08:55, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Is problem in line 352 I presume? -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:52, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes. Bgwhite (talk) 18:54, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I think we could fix it checking for double dots while merging and keeping them in-line but keep in mind that bug is very rare. I checked for portal templates with double-dots in database and found less than 200. None of them was subject to merge with another portal. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:12, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Silsbee effect

Hello Bgwhite. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Silsbee effect, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: this is real and I have found a reference. Thank you. JohnCD (talk) 20:32, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Episode listing removal

You incorrectly removed an episode listing for Born to Explore with Richard Wiese. Although the content is listed on littonweekendadventure.com, the content originated with our show as part of the Litton Weekend Adventure block. Last Resort

Hi, you made an amusing political quip a while back on ANI 2.0. about Last Resort. Well, I thought that the pilot episode of that show was extraordinarily good, but I lost interest after a few episodes and never watched it again. Did you stick with it throughout? I noticed that it just had its finale, and I was a tiny bit curious about how it ended.

In case you've recorded the finale but haven't watched it yet...
The article just coyly says that the captain "makes the ultimate sacrifice". That could mean anything from "he ensures the freedom of his crew by surrendering himself" to "he destroys the sub by detonating the nuclear warheads".

So, if you've seen it, what's the deal? MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 01:51, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Comment about bot edit

Hi Bgwhite! I've seen you've been doing lots of good work, especially with AWB. While some of the CHECKWIKI errors are serious issues that need to be addressed, I'm concerned that edits such as this that don't change how the article is displayed may get the AWB-haters and bot-haters all riled up. Just a friendly note from a fellow AWB user - happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:25, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

your (bot) changes to principalia

I'm a bit mystified by the changes. A couple of them I can't even spot - my eyes aren't what they used to be. Another merely seems to have exchanged the order of two references. John of Cromer in China Philippines (talk) mytime= Mon 18:07, wikitime= 10:07, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

My eyes are the same way. Unfortunately, they are still good enough to see my wife and scare me half to death. I did a scan from a database dump generated at the beginning of January. The scan detected duplicate categories. However, Sue Rangall fixed this problem on January 7th, after the database dump was generated. So, the primary reason for the bot to be there was already fixed. The bot only did the "general cleanups" portion of the edit summary.

The section headings were out of numerical order. The specific place in MOS where this is discussed is Wikipedia:Manual of Style (accessibility)#Headings. It is also a W3C standard. The specific reason is screen readers for the blind. This YouTube video explains it better than I could. There is a bot that specifically deals with heading issues as well as another bot that finds the problems. Bgwhite (talk) 23:47, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

SVN snapshot

Where you can edit the note of the template of Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. Don't you think it should be "an SVN"? --Tito Dutta (talk) 08:25, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Not quite understanding. Where exactly on the page? Bgwhite (talk) 08:27, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
At the top of the page, green template "Feel free to download a SVN snapshot"! --Tito Dutta (talk) 08:30, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
No, that is correct. SVN is a type of code repository. There are other types... CVS is an older type that SVN replaced. Git is another popular type. A code snapshot is the same as a photo snapshot. A code snapshot is getting the code that was captured at a particular moment in time. The snapshot maybe one big zip file, a svn dump or other types. So, saying "an SVN" doesn't mean anything. "a snapshot" would be shorter, but "a SVN snapshot" is just fine.
btw... you can compile the code yourself from files directly from SVN. After the initial setup of downloading everything, when code gets updated, you only download the code that gets updated. So, only a very small download is needed to update AWB. Download the compiler (SharpDevelop), the SVN software (TortoiseSVN), and .Net development tool (Windows SDK). Windows SDK is a big download. Bgwhite (talk) 08:59, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Bgwhite! Tito's concern is not a technical issue, but a lingustics issue. Instead of saying "a SVN snapshot", Template:AWB should say "an SVN snaphot", since "SVN" is pronounced with a leading vowel sound ("ess-vee-en"). GoingBatty (talk) 15:36, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Ahh, thanks Batty. Now it makes sense for my limited brain. Bgwhite (talk) 05:53, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
No worries - I couldn't figure out where to make the change yesterday. Today I looked harder and made changes here and here. GoingBatty (talk) 00:09, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Sixty songs of Milarepa

Read this book when you have some time or read a poetry or two from this book when you are in vacant or pensive mood! Milarepa, the writer/singer was one of the most powerful Buddhist practitioner and is said to have acquired some supernatural powers. 5000 years old Indian/Vedanta tell about eight primary siddhis, read it, it might be interesting Siddhi#Eight_primary_siddhis. Milarepa acquired few of those. And even if I ignore those supernatural powers blah blah, his songs are just too good! Remove interwiki links

I see there has been some reverted by people not aware of the situation - is there a link to the topic (a talk) that can be added to the edit summary to guide our editors to a page that explains whats going on?Moxy (talk) 20:47, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Good question. Wish there was something in plain English. There is a blog post and a FAQ. Just think of the "fun" when infoboxes become linked with wikidata. I'll added something to my edit summary. Bgwhite (talk) 20:54, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I prefer a clickable edit summary link. I've been using d:Wikidata:Introduction. I dunno if that's the best link, but it's something. If you hadn't told me about this thing, I would've thought that edits removing Interwikis were vandalism. I predict that the Infobox thing will really irritate me. I remember coming across some Infobox somewhere which got data from some mysterious unnamed source external to the article, which I found extremely annoying due to the difficulty of locating, verifying, and updating the data.

In the FAQ you linked to, in the "How do I know if interwiki links get vandalized?" section, it says: "Every change of interwiki links on Wikidata which are related to the articles you are watching on your Wikipedia should appear in your watchlist. If you see something improper, please go to Wikidata and correct it." To me, that seems to be saying that such changes show up on one's Wikipedia watchlist, but that's not the case. Are we expected to copy and update our Wikipedia watchlist on Wikidata? Maybe we need Wikidata watchlists to maintain our watchlists over multiple Wikiprojects. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:08, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Drmies reverted the removal of interwiki links in an article last night because he too thought it was vandalism.
The "wikidata in your watchlist" is not turned on by default. Goto preferences -> Recent Changes and it will be the last entry. I only came across this when somebody reported a bug with it. Bgwhite (talk) 00:16, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. Silly me – I had gone to my Preferences, but foolishly thought that options related to my watchlist would be under the "Watchlist" tab.... MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:33, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Checkwiki/AWB fix breaks rendering

This edit in the Categorical proposition article breaks the rendering of the Churchill reference. Jason Quinn (talk) 21:04, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

It is against MOS to use the html tag. You have to be slightly creative to fix it. Bgwhite (talk) 22:20, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Checkwiki/AWB brokenness reverted

Your changes to Slavic vocabulary caused a number of brokennesses, so I've reverted them. For one, you changed "eg" to "e.g." in the middle of a Russian word; for another, you removed HTML italic tags that were placed there on purpose to surround apostrophes, and not surprisingly changing them to Wiki format breaks rendering. Benwing (talk) 22:16, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Next time, don't blindly revert all the changes, just fix the error or keep the good changes.. By blindly reverting, you restored the errors that were in the article in the first place. It is against MOS to use HTML italic tags. Not surprisingly, the answer was already used in the article. Bgwhite (talk) 22:27, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

removing interwiki links

before you remove the interwiki links, could you make sure they are all listed in wikidata? it seems your edit removed the ar interwiki. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for missing that one. I'm afraid it won't be the only one. I've added a script to my vector.js file to place the wikidata link under the article title. This way I make sure there is a wikidata entry (quite a few articles have none) and check to make sure all the links are in wikidata. I have been adding missing links in wikidata. Filter 270 - Interwiki link removal

Shouldn't we disable Filter 270 - Interwiki link removal as now this is handled by Wikidata? -- Alexf(talk) 13:14, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

User talk:Kumioko

Your removal of my post from User talk:Kumioko was in violation of WP:TPO and WP:RUC. Fram (talk) 09:29, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

No it was not. People revert and totally blank out uncivil, rude comments on other people's talk pages. Is this really worth it to give the finger to someone? Bgwhite (talk) 09:31, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Have you actually read the pages I linked to? I doubt it. That "people" (who?) sometimes don't follow policy doesn't make it allright for you to do so. you are an admin, behave like one. Is such a miserable troll really worth the effort you are making to piss someone off against policy? Fram (talk) 09:35, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry that I told you to "fuck off". I was already pissed off at Kumioko's umpteenth attempt to get me into trouble, and being reverted twice without even bothering to come to my talk page and reason with me instead was not what I needed at the time, so I overreacted. I'll try to behave better in the future. Fram (talk) 12:47, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the apology. btw... I did leave you a message after the second revert, which was the first message I left on your talk page. I reverted at :26 after the hour, I pressed save on the message at :29 past the hour and you reverted at :30 past. I think you were too caught up in the moment to notice... which happens. You get in trouble when you feed the troll. Don't feed the troll and he can't cause any harm.
Belated reply: people only get the orange "new message" bar after they do something (opening a page, editing, reverting, ...); it is possible that I only got the information that you had posted on my talk page, after I reverted you again. I can't prove this of course, but in general I try to keep this "delay" in mind when dealing with vandals, who have the "right" to one more edit after I posted a warning, since they may not have seen the warning yet at the time of that final edit. Not really of any use for our interaction problem of last week, but just something to keep in mind. Fram (talk) 08:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Question about interwiki link removal

Hi,

I see that you have removed the interwiki links in Wikipedia:WPCleaner to use WikiData. But I don't understand how it works : if I click on the "Edit links" link, I end up on an empty search page... Is this a bug ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 10:51, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

It works fine for regular pages, but not "Wikipedia" pages like WPCleaner or Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser. It does appear to be bug. I'll inquire at Wikidata about it. WPCleaner's page at Wikidata is d:Q4796484.
A nice script that will put the Wikidata link under an Article's title is my vector.js file.
// ******* d:User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js
importScriptURI("//www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
Bgwhite (talk) 19:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Got a response. Bug was already filed at bugzilla:44536. Bgwhite (talk) 20:00, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the inquiry and the link to Wikidata page ! --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 20:58, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:!

I've had to restore a few instances of you've removed with a script—when it's used in the |title= field of cite web, it displays a pipe that, if replaced with an actual pipe, ends the field prematurely (for example, in the List of accolades received by Miami Vice list, it was the difference between the template displaying "Glen Frey | Artist | Official Charts" and just "Glen Frey"). I know you're doing this with an automated script so it's not a deliberate thing on your behalf but it's worth using the "show changes" feature to make sure any changes you're making with it are purely streamlining things and not creating a noticeable side-effect like this. Thanks for the upkeep, though, gnoming is always appreciated. GRAPPLE X 00:36, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank You. I'll go back on the edits I've made and double check. I'm trying to get rid of the }, { and in tables. I've never come across it being used in a cite template before. So, thank you for telling or I would never have known. Bgwhite (talk) 00:45, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Interwiki links

Hey. Please be sure to check if all the links are present in the Wikidata item before removing the interwiki links from Wikipedia. With this edit you missed out a language link for be-x-oldwiki which was not yet present on Wikidata. I've corrected it on the Wikidata item now. Thanks. Delsion23 (talk) 01:04, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I did check, see wikidata changelog for the interwiki links I added. The import script said it did not recognize be-x-old. Don't start bugging people without actually checking what was done. This will be the fourth bug I've come across and 3rd time someone has yelled while it turned out being a bug. BTW... the bots have already started to remove interwiki links and they don't check if all the interwiki links are in wikidata because bots on wikidata are doing that job. If all pages have interwiki links, it will currently take 100 days at the current pace. Bgwhite (talk) 01:20, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Reported at d:User talk:Tpt#slurpInterwiki won't add be-x-old. Atleast it is not another bugzilla entry that has been around for months. Bgwhite (talk) 01:41, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Edit summaries

You might consider linking to WP:Wikidata in your edit summaries, as it is slightly more comprehensive than the blog you've been linking. --Izno (talk) 14:56, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I got an email last night saying to point to d:Introduction. This follows other requests to point to the blog article and elsewhere. Doesn't matter what I have in the edit summary as I'll get asked to change it to something else. Personally, WP:Wikidata is a horrendous page... poorly laid out with very little useful information, especially about the interwiki change. Bgwhite (talk) 22:09, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
I assume you meant d:Wikidata:Introduction, which is what I said above that I used in my edit summaries. Of course, I think I'm done with my part, and I'm going to just leave it to you and the bots. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:30, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Introduction probably works. What would you do to improve the WP page though, if you've the time to give some feedback? --Izno (talk) 22:45, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Ooops, sorry. I was looking at Wikidata, which is the horrendous page. WP:Wikidata is a good page to link to. Wish there was a happy medium between the blog post and the Wikipage... blog is short and succinct while the page give a good overview. I'll change the edit summary to WP:Wikidata
The "Editing interlanguage links" on WP:Wikidata is messy. Maybe give the basic example of how to edit the page then make mention of the scripts and gadgets. To me, it gets confusing with everything thrown in together. That also reminds me, found an error in Yair Rand's checksitelinks script. It doesn't always remove the interwiki links that are on Wikidata. It only pops up once in awhile and I see no pattern to it. Will notify after the Wikidata's maintenance is over. Bgwhite (talk) 23:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
No problem. I've also been thinking the edit section needs some cleaning up. Will probably poke that this evening. --Izno (talk) 01:19, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

For some reason, it removed a parameter lastauthoramp=true from one citation. It was there for a purpose.

Misspelling of 'throught' was supposed to be 'throughout': I thought I'd caught that earlier.

I'm not too happy about replacing non-breaking hyphen (#x2011) with shy. Any reason for that? I don't really like hyphenating at all, particularly if the result is two silly orphans. I would like for instance 'Class‑1' to appear all on one line and not 'Class-
1'

"You" also removed the open and close transclusion commands round a chunk.

John of Cromer in China Philippines (talk) mytime= Fri 15:14, wikitime= 07:14, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

That is not how to do transclusion on an article page. You only transcluded if both pages have the same format for the transclusion, this was also not the case here.
I didn't change any hyphening.
Tables, should be avoided in efn, especially where a simpler option is available. Will fix it in a bit. Bgwhite (talk) 19:20, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, put in the simpler solution. Sorry about messing that up. In the edit summary you mentioned my mistake was a bot. A bot will have "bot" as part of their username, so the mess up was my fault. No bot could come close to me in messing up an article.
btw... in you edit, you removed some comments around a ref. Ref's name is "hedmanel1". If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will that the ref isn't used anywhere. Bgwhite (talk) 21:47, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Article was hit yesterday with several hammers heavier than yours! Some of my whinges became redundant as big chunks were deleted, including modified replacement of section citing "hedmanel1".

Your original edit notes mention something #34 and AWB which I thought between them was a bot, or at least, auto.

As regards transclusion, my thinking is that it exists in order to make sure all occurrences of a chunk are in the same state, as well as saving the time and chore of having to find all occurrences and change each the same.

The hyphens were changed from &#x‍2011; to - at the same time as &nda‍sh; was changed to – and &asy‍mp; to ≈ – your 2nd edit maybe. Afik there is no html entity name for &#x‍2011; ('hard' (non-breaking) hyphen).

Are there actual rules about "no tables in efn" and about transclusion? I don't want another six weeks' work binned so quickly. John of Cromer in China Philippines (talk) mytime= Sat 08:15, wikitime= 00:15, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I saw the Xeltran went to town on the article. Looks like some slash and burn practices removed ~15% of the content. Eeeks.
Error #34 references the #ifeq statement in the article. The if statement shouldn't be found in articles.
Transclusion... Generally you don't do this in article space, but it is done in Template space. A template is created and then referred to in the articles. For example a navigation box is created at template:Philippine regions and is used in articles by adding Philippine regions. Another problem with the transculsion in the article... It had a different layout than the rest of the List of islands of the Philippines article.
In theory, one should use the easiest possible syntax in an article so "regular" people can figure things out. Almost everybody wouldn't have a clue what &#x‍2011; means. But using &nda‍sh; or - makes it easier for people to understand because these are used much more frequently. Same thing goes for the table in the efn. Most people don't know about {{!} {!}}. Especially in this case, the column templates are easier to use and the better solution.Bgwhite (talk) 01:11, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I just found nbhyph which emits &#x2‍011;  :-)

I don't think I agree about writing down to the lowest level. I always think that tools are in a toolbox for a reason. Otherwise we just end up with Manchester screwdrivers, and if all you have in your toolbox is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail. Personally I find the wikitable approach slightly easier than the column templates. John of Cromer in China Philippines (talk) mytime= Sat 21:51, wikitime= 13:51, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

This isn't "writing down to the lowest level". You aren't getting it. Less than 75 articles out of 4 million use the {{!} {!}} notation for tables in articles and 50 are German road articles. It is obscure, 99.9% of editors don't know about it, it is more complicated than using a column template. Just because a nuke is in your toolbox doesn't mean you use it, especially where a bullet can be used. Bgwhite (talk) 23:05, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

February 2013 Sum up

  • Lists we need: 51, 65, 66, 16, 18
    • I've ran 51, 65 and 66, but were blank. Will look for a problem.
    • Will run 16 and 18 tonight.

  • Lists Yobot ran but need attention:
    • 10: Your call
      • Yes, needs to be looked at. Will do.
  • 17: I found a lot of duplicated categories with different keys
    • I ran thru 1/2 and didn't find duplicate keys. Was a pain in the butt last month. Probably only needs to be looked at manually every 3-4 months.
  • 37: If I missed any, they should be very few
  • 80: I can mark it as done unless you need to have a second look
    • Will look at 80 next month. Most of the 7,000 articles should have been fixed, so it will be easier next month as there will be alot less articles.

  • Lists need to be done manually: 8, 32, 49
  • Other:
    • 40: It's your thing
    • 43: AWB can close many of them but I'm afraid of false positives. I suggest we do it with AWB but manually
    • 60: It's your thing
      • Yes, I'll take of these.

  • I'll look at 10, 40, 43 and 60 manually this month. I know I won't get done with them all.
  • You can take any others that you feel like doing. 49 is a small list. 8 will have false positives... Scheme (programming language) is a good example.
I ran genfixes against 32. This should have reduced the list a bit. I tried 49 but there are many I don't know what to do with them. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:12, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

New bugfixes improve error fixing:

  • 10: 8892
  • 43: 8894
  • 55, 63: 8900 -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:40, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

8900 removes small tags not only if there are inside ref/sup/sub/small but also around. It's great! -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:49, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata's interwiki thing means good news for errors 45, 51 and 53. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:02, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Even better... the interwiki code in the checkwiki program was a bottleneck. When the code is ripped out, then the daily updates will run faster and check more articles. Two bots are at BRFA that will remove interwiki links. Bgwhite (talk) 21:16, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

AWB does better on unbalanced brackets: 8908, 8949. Also does better on error 2: 8919. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:45, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Something else has changed, but it is not in any of the changelogs. I can actually click on items in the Alerts window and AWB will actually move to the next alert in the edit window. Hasn't done that in awhile and it was very, very annoying in a big article. Been working ever since compiling the 8949. Bgwhite (talk) 09:01, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

I think #43 is almost done. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:58, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Yea, I've been working on that since yesterday. Bgwhite (talk) 09:01, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
I let the bot run a bit on the list. Most can be done now automatically. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:58, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
You already ran the bot on them this month and I've been cleaning up the rest. It only fixed 1/2 of the items, at best. Bgwhite (talk) 10:12, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
It turns I didn't finish the list or the newest version handles the error better: [2]. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:28, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Error #37 is almost done too. I just leave it to you to find any cases we don't handle with AWB and tell if we need to update the code. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:58, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

I reran on error #37. Many special characters were on redirects. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:59, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

American University

Hi Bgwhite! Yesterday I put together a whole lot of material - all related to a recently started university in Florida. This is my first publication on WP. All response that I received so far is a big box on top giving the reader to understand that I am advertising. I immediately deleted all text that might be understood as advertisement (see history). But again: Another big warning box -- and again without any comment. My question: Why do you apply such rude communication style with new-comers? Would you do the same with new guests on your birthday party? Please, try to be helpful and not just patrol as a policeman. I know that policemen develop an attitude that everybody they check might be a criminal. I am not. And I refuse to believe that every policeman is a monster. Let us work together, if time allows.Inawe 09:00, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Dear Bgwhite! My appreciation for you does not necessarily grow, since you are very fast to tag (it took you approx. an hour after publication) but quite slow to communicate (I am waiting the whole day..). This disproportion is definitely not WP's philosophy. Please, don't tell me that you curate in your free time. I publish in my free time. We are actually sitting in the same boat.Inawe 14:47, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
I never did apply any tags to American David Livingstone University of Florida. Those were done by other users. I only did one edit and it was to clean up the article... such as putting punctuation before references. Also, editors are from all different time zones. I went to bed for the night about 1/2 hour before your first comment and was still asleep when you posted your second comment.
Any page that goes live becomes subject to all rules. I suggest you create articles in your sandbox and then move it to article space when you are "done" with it. This way, nobody is "curating" your article until you are done.
Thanks a lot, Bgwhite! That was really helpful. And I apologize for my tone above. When I saw the AUF article this morning - after the curation of GoingBatty - I immediately had the impression that the article is in good hands. Thanks to you both! Inawe 07:10, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
I see GoingBatty has since edited the article extensively. He is one of the best editors on Wikipedia and he does a better job than I could ever dream of doing. Bgwhite (talk) 21:59, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
<blush>You're too kind!</blush> I'm OK at formatting and other cleanup, but someone else will need to address any rewording necessary to address the tags added by User:NawlinWiki. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:29, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Julian calendar

In this edit your bot altered the interior of an HTML comment. While it didn't really create a problem in this case, it seems unwise to allow a bot to change a comment; comments should be ignored by virtually all software. Please examine your bot to figure out why it is going around changing comments. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:53, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

The bot does not edit inside comments and did not in this case. What it did do was fix the syntax of the comment tag. The comment tag ends in a --> and not ---------------> . Bgwhite (talk) 21:39, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Continuing self-promotion/vandalism

Hello, I have noticed that you made some warnings on the Deepankarbu's "Talk" page in regards to his self-promotion of his own spam "blog" which contains information basically copy-pasted from an official original sources... other languages

Dear Bgwhite,

You removed the interwiki in the article Île de France (train) pointing to Wikidata. I did this myself in several articles on the French, Italian and Dutch Wikepedia so I know what you mean. However while creating the Île de France in English the links from wikidata didn't show up although they can be seen at the Dutch side. The same occurred today when linking the new article about the Lemano (train), the Italian and Dutch wikipedia, using the Wikidata show the language links including English, but the English Wikipedia didn't show any languages at all despite the existing wikidata links. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks for help, Jaap. --JB63 (talk) 15:12, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

For Île de France (train), there was no entry in Wikidata for that article. The entry was created after you finished by a bot. Lemano (train) already had an entry in Wikidata. The only thing I can think of is the Wikidata entry didn't have a parameter for the English article. I see you did create it. You were having trouble after you created the English paramater on Wikidata?
I really wish I could tell you what the correct way to deal with this when doing a new article. There are so many bots flying around, Wikidata went live yesterday to all languages... I have a feeling things are going to be chaotic for a few months. Bgwhite (talk) 18:52, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

About editing Myoma U Than Kywe and BEHS 2 Latha

Dear Sir/Madame Bgwhite,
I know you are very busy with wikipedia and you are VIP of en.wikipedia. Please forgive me for editing about Myoma U Than Kywe.
I saw this offer requisition sentence at Myoma U Than Kywe's page: "This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (October 2011)".
So I want to help Wikipedia and I just added some facts at Myoma U Than Kywe.

I know that he has many references at my.wikipedia. For example: I found some references about Myoma U Than Kywe in Burmese and English: 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. These all references are in Burmese
about Myoma U Than Kywe. Then, I don't know how to add references and facts rules of en.wikipedia.

For more information about Myoma U Than Kywe, you may ask to my.wikipedia. I respect him according to his good effort for Burma independence so I add
some facts about his biography at en.wikipedia. For example: (Politician Myoma U Than Kywe Burmese: မြို့မ-ဦးသန်းကြွယ်, pronounced ( [mjo̰ mə-ʔú θáɴ tɕwɛ̀]) was born in Thongwa Township in Rangoon Burma in 1924. He was one of the leaders of the Panglong Conference along with General Aung San that initiated the formation of the new nation of Union of Burma in February 1947. During the Second World War Myoma U Than Kywe’s political life began. He was educated at Rangoon University. “Myoma” and "U" are honorifics rather than part of his given name. He served as Chairman of the Myoma High School, leading him to add “Myoma" to his name. He was President of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, President of the Myoma National School Union and President of the Rangoon Students Union in 1946-1948.

Myoma U Than Kywe and Burmese Martyrs' Day
Myoma U Than Kywe led the ceremony of the First Burmese Martyrs' Day on July 20, 1947 in Rangoon.

Political life
He became Central Executive Committee member and General Secretary and President of the State Economic and Trade Council (1948-1963). He became Junior Leader of Burma Independence Army and member and C.E.C member of Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League and (1942-1963). He was elected head of department and chairman of the Rangoon Municipal Council (since 1953). He became an Executive Member of the Governing council of the Rangoon Myoma National High School (1948-1964). His youngest son is Myoma Myint Kywe, a writer and historian from Burma.

He died on 22 September 1983 in Rangoon, Burma.)

And then, these all are according to Myoma Magazine 1995 and University magazine (in Burmese language), etc.

I love wikipedia and I want to help wikipedia because wikipedia is very essential for students
and people. If you think that I am disturbing about Myoma U Than Kywe's page, I humbly apology to you and en.wikipedia.

By the way, I am so sad that why BEHS 2 Latha's alumni was deleted. I want to add more PUBLIC references and information about alumni of BEHS 2 Latha if I get more public references (not WIKIPEDIA references) and information. I know all information about BEHS 2 Latha because I am an OLD school-girl of BEHS 2 Latha (Formerly St. John's Convent School). I took some school photos in Latha Township, Burma and I uploaded at en.wikipedia. I am just an Amature, not professional. I will not add wikipedia references AGAIN because you told me: "Remove unsourced additions. Wikipedia cannot be used as a ref".

Please will you accept me to add public references at BEHS 2 Latha? I love my school and our wikipedia!!!

I sincerely edit some pages at en.wikipedia and my.wikipedia. If you have any instructions (how to do, how to add, methods of editing) about editing en.wikipedia, please let me know.

God bless you and thanks a lot,

Removing interwiki links

Hello Bgwhite. I see that as always you are on the ball in regard to new articles. I notice however that you removed the interwiki link on Frieda Riess. I am a bit confused about the wikidata approach to this problem. It seems to me rather risky not to add the interwiki links when creating new articles as in many cases a name in one language can refer to a completely different person or place in another language. Perhaps you can clarify the procedure to be followed. Maybe there's a place where one can add the interwiki links directly to wikidata in order to avoid incorrect tieups?--Ipigott (talk) 09:35, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

In "theory", bots will be running around adding new articles and interwiki links to Wikidata. There will also be bots checking for invalid interwiki links. It is going to take awhile for things to settle down for the "theory" to be working 100%. You can add articles and interwiki links to Wikidata.
  1. If you goto Wikidata, on the left-hand sidebar, there is a link called "Create a new item". After you click on it, then click on "Check sitelink".
  2. If you are going to be doing this alot, there is a handy script you can add to your common.js Wikidata:Tools#Display Wikidata Info on Wikipedia. This will add a box under the article's title. It will either give the link to the article's wikidata entry or say it is not found. If the entry is there, then you can add interwiki links to the article's Wikidata entry. If it is not found, there will be a link which takes you to Wikidata to add the article.
Other editors and I have been checking the reports for articles that had a problem with removing the links. There have been cases where the interwiki link went to the wrong article. More common is a language link in the article goes to a redirect where the language link at Wikidata goes to the actual article. Bgwhite (talk) 09:50, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Useful advice. I'll copy this to my user page for future reference.--Ipigott (talk) 12:49, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Re: Adrian Visby (artist)

You're right, of course - once I noticed the prior deletions I should have just requested a speedy delete. I'll know better the next time I encounter something similar. Wow, that's a pretty extreme number of socks! Thanks for the heads up and again for opening the case.  Gong show 16:46, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, Bgwhite! I'm faintly curious to know why you removed the one solitary in-line reference in the micro-stub I recently created for this singer (for whom references in languages other than Arabic are few and far between), given that we are repeatedly warned that "An article without references, especially a biography of a living person, may be deleted". And also why you found it necessary to change the referencing style, which I had established from the outset as list-defined, when WP:CITEVAR fairly specifically suggests that you should seek editor consensus before so doing. Do you have any objection to my reverting those changes? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:42, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Because the reference didn't fully back up the statement. It ref says "The raï performed just over the Moroccan border in the town of Oujda, by Mohammed Ray, Mimoun el Oujdi". It doesn't say El Oujdi is Moroccan. It doesn't say he sings predominantly the rai. Therefore, the ref is just a general one and I changed it to be a general ref. I didn't change the referencing style... It is exactly how it was before. As a general ref, the list-defined formatting no longer works. Bgwhite (talk) 20:30, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
That source quite clearly states both that he is a singer of raï and that raï is a predominantly Algerian musical genre. Do you have an objection to those two facts being combined to state that he is a "singer in the predominantly Algerian raï genre of music"? If so, would you like to propose a better wording? Who said, and where, that Mimoun is predominantly a raï singer? I know I didn't, though of course that is exactly what he is. Do you really seriously believe that the fact that he is Moroccan is sufficiently likely to be challenged to require a separate reference, given his demonymic? If so, I believe you should add the appropriate tag, not remove the reference for other material. Do you have any objection to my reverting your changes, which appear to have been motivated by an over-hasty reading of the few words in the article and an incomplete understanding of WP:CITEVAR? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:08, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
WP:CITEVAR has nothing to do with this. You brought it up, but it still is not relevant. The reference style did not change. I change the format only because it gives off a big red error once is removed after the first sentence.
Put the ref back as it was. Not worth it to get one's panties in a twist.
FYI... only use lang-ar once. Rest of the article use ar. Using lang-ar more than once is over wikilinking. Still need to use {{lang|ar| for screen readers used by the blind. Bgwhite (talk) 07:37, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks. And thanks for the FYI, good call. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:56, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

James Newton Chadwick proposed deletion

Thank you for your contribution to the James Newton Chadwick page, I would like however to contest your proposition for its deletion. Though you are right, his official website stops several years ago, online inactivity is surely not a reason for deletion in itself. There is a wealth of information out there about him though it is often from Folk Club newsletters and festival programs due to the nature of his career. His website quotes national press reviews of his work (e.g. from The Guardian/The Times) and the links used as references here are taken from the BBC website (surely one of the most reliable and independent sources there is?) and the official website of an internationally renowned artist (David Shrigley). If this is still not enough to convince you of the reliability of the article, I would be grateful if you could suggest ways of improving it so as to avoid its deletion. Thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wingger (talkcontribs) 12:22, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

  1. "...online inactivity is surely not a reason for deletion in itself." It is not. I make mention of that as it appears Chadwick is no longer active, therefore we have to base on what he as done before he "retired". All singers retire at some point.
  2. The reviews are about the album in which Chadwick did one song. The Sunday Times just mentions his name. The Guardian has one sentence.
  3. I said "Unable to find reliable, independent sources about him". He has to be the subject of articles. WP:MUSICBIO has more information and puts it better than I ever could. Bgwhite (talk) 20:55, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Your header

BTW, you might like to edit your header to this page, part of which reads "If used in anyway, it will be erased and your message not read". Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:15, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Why? Bgwhite (talk) 07:37, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Because it is ungrammatical, an adverb preceded by a preposition. Is it supposed to read "... used in any way ..." or something like "If, despite my warning, you use it anyway ..."? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:56, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata

Thanks mon vieux, I had mis-assumed that the wikidata bot would catch new articles automatically, but have now "learned it" and created wikidata entries. Also experimented with the lang tabs. How far back with article creations do I need to go adding wikidata? In ictu oculi (talk) 10:11, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q787319 just check I did this right please. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:57, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Yup, you did Jehan Yperman's Wikidata's entry correctly. In theory, bots will take over. A couple of bots have been removing interwiki links for the past month. However, alot of human intervention is needed due to various problems (interwiki links goto different articles, link in article is different from an already added link in Wikidata, etc). Hopefully in a few months things will have calmed down on the interwiki front so new articles will be done automatically.
There is a nice script that will list the article's Wikidata entry under the article's title. d:Tools#Display Wikidata Info on Wikipedia.
