Basically, the use of the images in this case was a violation of our non-free content criteria (you may also want to read our non-free content guidelines and this helpful essay on non-free content overuse). In short, these images were adding little to the articles, and the use of such a large number of images was not a good thing- specifically, there were potential violations of non-free content criteria 8 and 3. I'm happy to discuss this issue with you, but you should remember that there is already a strong consensus against the use of non-free content in galleries.
