content factor

the page on content factor i wrote was tagged for speedy deletion--wrongly i believe almost every word on the page was lifted verbatim from a non-copyright article on the subject (from PLoS ONE) content factor was created (as stated!) in response to flaws with Impact Factor. That is, it inherently has a "point of view". But this is a point of view that has passed rigorous peer review and hence (with the caveat that the text discloses that point of view, which it does) should not be deleted 4081xsn (talk) 14:52, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

The peer-reviewed references you've included in the article should be included in the article on Impact factor instead, in a section mentioning problems and with no mention whatsoever of "Content factor" as the solution since they themselves make no mention of it. Ok, I am at a loss: the community at large says there are flaws with impact factor. (see wikipedia page on that). That's a given. Some researchers devised "content factor" as a response to that. The peer review literature has accepted "content factor" as a valid attempt at remedy. "Content factor" is thus a concept in the peer review literature. There should be a wikipedia page on it. To me, that's a given. Maybe we can debate what that page should say, but it seems to be an abuse of discretion that you are dinging text that peer review literature did not.   • No, that's not a given. We have guidelines about the notability of subjects (WP:GNG). The "content factor" has up till now only be mentioned by these authors themselves and nobody else. Given the triviality of their "factor" (it's just the ancient "total cites"), I'd be amazed if this would become an accepted term. Peer review sometimes fails and I think that the fact that this article got published constitutes a possible failure of peer review. I am an academic editor for PLoS ONE myself and am considering contacting the AE who handled this (and possibly higher-level editorial staff). --Guillaume2303 (talk) 16:02, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Page Deletion Request - Universal Life Church World Headquarters

I note you put in for deletion claiming such to be spammy, yet the day before or earlier the same day you put in for a redirect thinking that Universal Life Church and Universal Life Church World Headquarters were one in the same. Clearly based on talk on the deletion page both are separate entities. Notability in accord with Wikipedia guidelines, however minute it maybe has been established by a 3rd party.

The Universal Life Church page (not the Universal Life Church World Headquarters page) is long outdated and has zero expert input. You will see that the Universal Life Church website for the Universal Life Church page has not been updated for six years. http://www.ulchq.com The President, Andre Hensley has even publicly stated in the Modesto Bee article he would just assume pastor the local Church and not follow in his Father's footsteps. The Universal Life Church page has not been updated, because it can't updated because the ULC Modesto does not want it to appear they are active. It is by there choice.

I think you were a bit hasty in redirecting their page to the Universal Life Church World Headquarters page, but I can understand why. But at the same token come the next day or later that day you can't blame or fault Universal Life Church World Headquarters because Universal Life Church a separate entity chooses not to update their page.

What needs to be done here is on the Universal Life Church page it needs to be noted that the ulchq.com website denotes inactivity for several years and it can't be established whether this Church is active or not. I do not believe removal is warranted.

I'm asking for you to reconsider your spammy type claims and to lift the page deletion tag you initiated. It is the right thing to do. Many revisions appear to have been made, you would not have redirected the ULC page to the ULC World HQ page if you felt the the ULC World HQ page did not meet Wikipedia guidelines.JordanFrancis (talk) 13:00, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

An article about the headquarters of an organization must be only about the headquarters, never about the organization as a whole. To show that the headquarters meet our inclusion guidelines, you must show that there are sources independent of the organization that give substantial coverage of the headquarters. I find that to be lacking in the article. I'm calling it spammy because it contains mostly the kind of information I'd expect to find on a page the organization itself has made, not the kind I'd expect from third-party reliable coverage which is what a Wikipedia article must be based on.
As for the redirection, it was the only alternative to deletion. Since someone has figured redirecting is not an acceptable solution, then the only alternative to redirection is outright deletion. -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 13:27, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

That's indeed the kind of references that will guarantee the article's survival in a deletion discussion, yet we need to see that we can find more than one such source to establish notability. What's the point on using BLP prod for someone who is asserted to have written multiple academic books, when the verification necessary to avoid prod is so easy? Actually, I was aware from the beginning that my tag wouldn't stay long; in fact, by the time I read your message it was already gone with one source that satisfies the BLP policy. I, too, would have looked for a source, but I didn't have time to do it right away and someone else beat me to it. How do I make a good Wiki page?

Our policy on neutrality calls for articles based on sources not affiliated with the subject of the article. Notability, whose simplest definition is the measurement of whether such sources exist, is the make-or-break inclusion criterion for topics in Wikipedia. Jackson Pace Notability

Hi, I recently noticed that you've marked my page about actor Jackson Pace with a notability tag.

I can easily understand how sources (and the lack thereof) can be a problem, and I'd like to ask that you recognize the problem I am facing here. A previously written article by someone was originally deleted for a lack of any sources at all, and I stepped in to make sure the actor gets the right recognition. However, it was very apparent in the early writing stages that the original writer was not in the wrong-- he was just a little too blind.

Due to the fact that Jackson Pace isn't very well known, nearly-to-none pages exist on the internet or in print about him. Some of the biographies I grabbed are from IMDb, the most trustworthy source out of a total two or three I had found that day.

If you don't choose to believe me, just look yourself and you will find trace amounts of information reminiscent of a thief covering up his tracks. ---Saw1998 (talk) 13:16, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Actually, it is generally acknowledged by regular Wikipedia editors that IMDB is not a reliable source per our standards, since much of its contents is user-submitted, although it would be acceptable as a temporary source, until the real source used by IMDB can be located. Also, sources that are merely directory entries do not show a subject's notability: at best, they show that the article isn't a hoax.
You say that Due to the fact that Jackson Pace isn't very well known, nearly-to-none pages exist on the internet or in print about him. In fact, what we call notability in Wikipedia is precisely the availability of such pages. Yeah, I happen to agree with you when it comes to IMDb, I changed the reference to something more reliable, but I was thinking that you marked it because of the small amount of references, four. It's the fact neither IMDB nor Rarefilmfinder amount to more than directory entries when it comes to this person. No, we'll have to find another way to do the disambiguation. I believe raising the issue at Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany is the best way to go. These are the people who deal with all Germany-related article; I was simply doing new page cleanup and screening for spam and other obvious issues. It was written like a home page for said organization, and made generous use of the pronoun "we" (which normally shouldn't appear anywhere). Please keep in mind that a Wikipedia article about an organization should not reflect how the organization wishes to be seen by the outside world. Rather, it should reflect what reliable third-party sources are saying about the organization behind its back. See Neutral Point of View for more information.

The first thing is to determine whether the topic of the article, that is, the company, meets Wikipedia's inclusion guidelines. If it doesn't, then there can be no article. There are so many problems with your article that I don't even know where to begin. And it's not about what should be in it and hasn't been included yet. It's about what to remove from it.
  • The first word of the article is "Hi". That should be omitted altogether.
  • The second word of the article is "My". Basically, you should avoid writing in the first person wherever possible, and where this is not possible you should omit the entire sentence. Writing in an objective manner, this sentence would be written "Kevin Lajiness's Name Is Kevin Lajiness" or something similar. See WP:SOAP and WP:COI.
  • The rest of the first paragraph is totally off-topic. This isn't about you, it's about a cleaning project.
  • When I tried to insert the {{reflist}} template, I was blocked by Wikipedia's spam filter because a link to reverbnation.com, which I removed. See WP:BLACKLIST.
  • Speaking of sources, Facebook should be avoided. It's hard to navigate, especially if the relevant posting gets buried under thousands of more recent unrelated messages, and Facebook content doesn't get screened by professionals before becoming visible to all. It is in fact better to use no source at all than to use Facebook as a source. See WP:RS and WP:V.
And those are just the first few problems. Basically, it all comes down to this: find secondary sources about your cleaning project that do meet our guidelines for reliability of sources, and start the first draft of your article based uniquely on information that can be found in such sources: if not said there, Wikipedia shouldn't say it either. Look this is a biography about me and a park i built for a city, it was a unusable toxic overgrown old industrial sight "I did the work, Me" I can avoid that, the history of my art and my influences are important because i believe no one has coined "Naive Music" like me to the extent i have, but leaving that aside, reverbnation promotes music in a new and formally unattainable way, so even if someone was doing what i did that came out of the building of the park through my influences no one had the capabilities to do it on the computer till the software was developed and reverbnation and sight like reverbnation came along, people did not use the property as a park till i built it, cause physically they couldn't, you are hung up on english the story can be developed , i have records pictures and a mountain of art that came from this and the other open spaces in linwood that offer a unique Natural eye to the history in these place specially this park, you can not dismiss me merely with sound bite and technicalities Kevin Lajiness (talk) 01:21, 15 November 2012 (UTC). You have to make up your mind. Are you writing an autobiography or an article about the park? If it's your autobiography then you need to move the article to a more appropriate title, probably Kevin Lajiness or something similar, and provide reliable sources to show that you are notable. You may be, but we can't tell, and it's not a good idea to write an autobiography. Please read WP:AUTOBIO. If you are writing an article about the park then you need to provide reliable sources to show that the park is notable, and remove the personal content. Lactoad12 regarding Bell of Lost Souls Article and Wargaming

Hi,

So, I have some questions regarding not only this submission, but an entire industry - tabletop wargaming, and Wikipedia.

The tabletop wargaming industry is surprisingly large, with hundreds of millions in annual sales and a good number of major manufacturers, and media outlets and publications covering it. Virtually none of these are represented on Wikipedia in any real capacity. In some cases, major manufacturers are overtly skeptical of the internet and prefer to keep things "in the real world" so to speak. Customers are often real world-centric as the games themselves are physical in nature (as opposed to say video games for example).

So the question is how to best acquire acceptable sources and present this industry in Wikipedia in the presence of so many real world sources that have little to no digital versions of themselves?

Take for example Privateer_Press, a ten year old company out of Seattle that is the number 2 manufacturer of wargames in the world. They run their own tournaments, produce multiple game systems, possess massive product range, employ hundreds-thousand, yet appear from their Wiki page to be a 2-bit sketchy operation.

The Bell of Lost Souls article is of a kind. Here we are dealing with a aged online publication, known throughout the industry with heavy traffic. There are hundreds of individual blogs, internet forums, and customers who reference the website daily, but I'm uncertain if things like that "count" as secondary sources. If they are, they can certainly be rounded up by the dozen easily. As mentioned above, the major manufacturers often give scant attention even to their own online presence, so it is difficult to find cross-references online to each other. It's just the nature of the industry.

It's an interesting problem, but one I'd like to pursue with some guidance. Until now, the entire wargaming industry is almost invisible on Wiki and I'd like to help correct that. But I don't think deletion of every new article will achieve that goal - it will only reinforce the blackout.

First, I would like to thank you for pointing out that the article does seem somewhat less than neutral. However, I believe it has a place on Wikipedia and could be of valuable use to anyone looking for examples of projects in the field of Conservation Biology. I created the article as an assignment for one of my classes and had no knowledge of the project prior to looking for articles concerning backyard habitats. I have no affiliation with Green Links, however if the contested material is only a few phrases or sections, I would be more than happy to alter wording or delete questionable fragments. If there were certain statements in the article that sounded promotional to you, please let me know so that I may reword them. At no point did I intend to promote the project, only to describe the process it uses in detail and how the project relates to conservation.

What is salvageable in this article belongs in other articles anyway. The first step would be to gather reliable third-party sources offering significant coverage of this website, and to write an article based entirely on information you can get from these sources. Local popularity is not a criterion for inclusion; notability is, and notability is attested, in most cases, by the existence of significant coverage in reliable third-party sources whose scope is anything but local. As I imagine many of our editors will be editing at a greatly reduced level for the next few weeks, what with the Christmas and New Year's holidays coming, there is no specific content-related contest this month. The contest, if anything, is to make the most of the season, in whatever way, if any, you deem appropriate.

This coming month (mid-December through mid-January) includes the Advent season, and one of the two greatest holidays of the Christian year, Christmas. In the spirit of Christmas, the spotlight for the coming month might actually best be on those people closest to you. We know that a lot of our editors here are associated in some way or another with schools, and many if not most of them are going on rather extended breaks for the holidays. This can give some of us a chance to meet up with old friends, spend time with our families and those close to us, and, in a sense, "recharge" for the new year. So, for all of you who are in some way part of that group, we wish you the very best of holidays. We hope you all return to editing after the holidays with your spirits lifted and with your energies at peak level. There are some small matters in development here as well, and it is our hope that some of them will be ready come the next newsletter. But, until then, we wish you all the happiest and holiest (if appropriate) holidays.

It's still missing the one essential element: evidence that the topic of the article meets our inclusion guidelines. That is, does Wikipedia even want an article about Munzee in the first place?
In other words, if you want Wikipedia to have an article about Munzee, the very first thing you should do is find significant coverage of Munzee in reliable independent sources. By "independent", I mean something like a website where Munzee can't make any changes without involving their attorneys in the process or, better yet, without going to court to get the source to make the changes. By "reliable", I mean something where the author and/or publisher has an established reputation for fact-checking. By "significant", I mean anything that's more than a massing mention or a directory entry.
Before submitting your article again, you should rewrite it entirely from scratch, using ONLY information you're able to gather from sources that meet the above criteria. Topic notability, which is the make-or-break inclusion criterion on Wikipedia, is the measurement of whether or not such sources exist. Not only did this user seem to add a product, but deleted several products to make the ssh comparison to be tainted. (That is my opinion solely) I say this because the history also shows that a product named Mindterm has been deleted, There are others deleted, as well.

The bottom line is how can we revert back to the older ssh comparison pages. That shows Mindterm. I'm not an administrator, however many tasks that would belong to administrators on other websites, such as what you've attempted to do, can be done by regular users here.
The one person who removed all those entries is Tedickey (talk · contribs) and he did so to comply with the principle explained in the essay Wikipedia:Write the article first. This is about comparison tables and similar list-like articles, so that they don't have to include all mom-and-pop shareware that are used by no one but the immediate family of their authors. The principle is that, to be included in a comparison table, a piece of software must have an article written about it. You might want to check with that user to reintrocude something you feel belongs in the comparison table. -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 04:19, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
By the way, I saw a message you left on your own talk page for everyone to see. That the product is "valid" is not by itself a criterion for inclusion in the encyclopedia. Notability, not mere existence, is the make-or-break inclusion criterion. Contest of the month
No particular contest this month. I am however getting rather close to getting together a more or less complete set of articles relating to different areas of Christianity which can be found in recent reference sources on the broad topic of Christianity, and about various subtopics, which I hope to have finished in the next few weeks. I wonder what the rest of you might think of, maybe, making the contests of future months be basically directed at filling in the gaps of our existing coverage of topics, like those topics given significant coverage in specialized reference works which we don't yet have content on, and giving the thanks, and rewards, whatever they might be, to those who create and develop such content. I am starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Christianity noticeboard#Future contests, and would very much welcome any input from interested parties in how to set it up, determine winners including how many winners, etc.

Spotlight

The Spotlight this month turns to the the Syriac Christianity work group. The scope of this project includes the various traditions of Syriac Christianity, including the Assyrian Church of the East, Ancient Church of the East, Church of the East, Syriac Orthodox Church, Chaldean Catholic Church, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Syriac Catholic Church, Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, and Saint Thomas Christians. One of these groups, the Assyrian Church of the East, is considered by scholars to have probably been, for several hundred years, the largest Christian grouping in the planet, with its numerous members in Central Asia and Eastern Asia. Numerous texts, traditions, and practices unique to these groups exist, including the Jesus Sutras and the belief of the Assyrian Church of the East that the bread they use in the preparation of their Eucharist uses the same basic yeast as that used in the bread of the Last Supper itself. Sadly, given the linguistic barriers to much of the content relative to these groups, and the comparative lack of notoriety they have in the Western world, much of this content does receive less attenion, and thus less development, than much other content. There is a large amount of extremely valuable historical material here still waiting to be adequately developed by editors with an interest in the topic, and I personally very much hope that we can draw more attention to these topics, and the content related to them.

What you've added is enough to pass the WP:BLPPROD policy, but I don't think it will be enough to make the article survive an Articles for deletion discussion should anyone initiate one. However, I have grounds to believe there are substantial third-party sources about this humorist out there, so you can leave out primary sources such as Youtube, Facebook, and the like: none of these can be considered adequate per Wikipedia's standards and should in fact be left out, with merely a link in the External Links section. Also, there's a longstanding concensus among Wikipedia editors that the number of Youtube views for a certain artist should not be mentioned in the article, since such numbers may be the result of a practice known as googlebombing.

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. The draft you had posted gave me no reason to bother googling the man. We just get too many articles about "up-and-coming" people and not enough time to google them all -- or any single one of them for whom we don't expect anything good to come up. Because (and this is just my opinion), many page curators filter by removing already reviewed pages, and in the case of articles nominated for deletion, more eyes are better than less. If you PROD a BLP because it's unsourced, wouldn't it be better if more people can look at it and maybe source and rescue it? In my opinion this is a problem with the tool. It should not mark as reviewed when tagging for deletion. But regardless, sorry for the message. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 00:56, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
