The Sparman Clinic

I do not want to delete The Sparman Clinic page as I am in the process of updating ALL medical facility pages in Barbados. We have a lot of people come here and not know of our medical facilities on the island. Likewise The Sparman Clinic which specilailizes in interventional cardiology provides a couple of services which cannot be found in other parts of the Caribbean. Doctors on the island are frequently told by patients in the US who have had minor surgery or who have health conditions they cannot visit Barbados or the other islands because "they do not have the health care facilities to help you if you get sick" which is nonsense. I am updating these pages as an informative way to educate people about healthcare in Barbados. The Sparman Clinic was the first of many pages. I am simply having problems understanding how to add more information without it all being included in the top summary. If John Hopkins Hospital which does not provide any health care help to 99% of people in the Caribbean why are you wanting to delete this page?! Basically, your argument amounts to "I want people to know that this facility exists," which is not something Wikipedia is willing to take in consideration. Only notable businesses are covered by Wikipedia, and we define the notability of a topic as the amount of significant third-party coverage about it. Lightfish page

You deleted a page I was creating - which with hind site was possibly too promotional - Could i have more time to edit it down into something much shorted but information/history of me led. It would be easier to edit what I had put up than start agin from scratch. Thanks

Actually, starting from scratch will be A LOT easier, since 99% of the page consisted of promo-talk intended to put the company under a good light. The entire testimonials section, for example, should be done away with. But you can work in your user space before transferring the page to the mainspace.
As an aside, I strongly urge you to completely shed all of your marketing instincts before starting a page on this company. From my experience, people who work in marketing are usually unable to avoid crossing the line between information and marketing. The best way to come up with something Wikipedia will accept is to gather all reliable third-party coverage (please click on the link to see what we mean by "reliable") you can find and write an article using only information you find there. -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 16:22, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Membership report
The parent Christianity WikiProject currently has 357 active members. We would like to welcome our newest members, Thomas Cranmer, Mr.Oglesby, and Sneha Priscilla. Thank you all for your interest in this effort. We would be able to achieve nothing here without the input of all of you. If any members, new or not, wish any assistance, they should feel free to leave a message at the Christianity noticeboard or with me or other individual editors to request it.


From the Editor

We apologise for the hiatus in the publication of this newsletter due to unforseen circumstances leading to the wikibreak of John Carter, and so I have taken over as acting editor, and have taken this opportunity to move the publication date to the start of each month as planned, to better reflect on the previous month and look ahead to the next. This issue covers the period of time from mid-January to the end of March.

Since the last issue we have seen the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis. This has received much coverage both in the world media and on Wikipedia. While there is still much work to do, several quality articles have been written and the editors involved are thanked for their efforts.


This month we look ahead to Easter and the celebration of God's love for mankind through the crucifixion and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. With that, I wish you all happy reading!

Contest of the month
No particular contest this month. I am however getting rather close to getting together a more or less complete set of articles relating to different areas of Christianity which can be found in recent reference sources on the broad topic of Christianity, and about various subtopics, which I hope to have finished in the next few weeks. I wonder what the rest of you might think of, maybe, making the contests of future months be basically directed at filling in the gaps of our existing coverage of topics, like those topics given significant coverage in specialized reference works which we don't yet have content on, and giving the thanks, and rewards, whatever they might be, to those who create and develop such content. I am starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Christianity noticeboard#Future contests, and would very much welcome any input from interested parties in how to set it up, determine winners including how many winners, etc.

Complete recording

Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe, BWV 22, a cantata by the German composer J.S. Bach, was promoted to GA this month and was written by Gerda Arendt. Many thanks for her continuing work in the area of early 18th Century Church music.

Spotlight

The Spotlight this month turns to the the Jesus work group. The scope of this project includes the life and teachings of the central figure of Christianity, Jesus Christ and aims to write about them in a non-denominational encylopædic style. Top-priority articles include Jesus, Christ, Resurrection of Jesus, and Holy Grail, whereas High-priority articles include Aramaic Language, a former FA, as well as Sermon on the Mount, Lamb of God, and Passion (Christianity). The workgroup has also published two books, covering Christ's final days and the Parables of Jesus. The workgroup has two GAs, Nativity scene, and Jesus in Islam, but unfortunately the flagship article, Jesus was delisted in 2009. It is also responsible for three WP:1.0 articles, and the WikiWork of the project is 4.56, which indicates the "average" article is between Start and C class.

First of all, Wikipedia is neither a directory nor an indiscriminate collection of information. It is an encyclopedia. Just because a tour company exists does not by itself make it eligible for coverage in a separate article. An individual tour company must be notable, that is, it must have been the subject of extensive coverage in reliable third-party sources.
So the directions are as follows:
  1. Choose which tour company you will work on next.
  2. Gather all reliable third-party sources you can find that are talking about that company and that are more than passing mentions and/or personal blogs.
  3. Write a first draft of the article that will contain only information found in those sources. Information not found in such sources is to be omitted.
  4. Avoid stating anything about customer enjoyment.
If you are unable to find reliable third-party sources about a particular company, then that means Wikipedia will not have an article about that company.

Gulland Padfield

I would ask you to please remove your speedy deletion tag on Gulland Padfield. Gulland Padfield is a well-documented firm and the article is written in terms which make clear what the firm does in an encyclopaedic fashion rather than simply being promotional. This is reinforced by strong references. The words which have been tagged do not count as promotion as while I am not directly involved with the firm I know that the firm is unable to publicise which firms it works with due to confidentiality. Other consultancy firms have the same problem on wikipedia. In any case the offending paragraph does not constitute a speedy deletion as more than enough material is left with that phrase's removal to qualify still as encylopaedic. Please edit and improve rather than delete, especially in an instance like this where I'm very clearly happy to improve the article and accept constructive criticism. From the Editor

This month we hear the news that the Bible is to be made into a film after outstanding success of a biblical miniseries on the History Channel, and we have seen the release of Iraqi Pastor Ali Hamzah from his confinement in Iraq.

After last month's spotlight on the Jesus work group, the flagship article, Jesus, was nominated for Good Article status after much work from FutureTrillionaire and History2007, and provisionally passed by the reviewer, although they have requested a second opinion. Our many thanks for the hard work that has gone into restoring this article to a quality piece of work.

This month the second largest denomination of Christianity, the Eastern Orthodox Church, celebrates Easter and the death and resurrection of the Son of God Jesus Christ.

This serves as a very useful list if any project members are "stuck for what to do" and there remains lots of potential for articles developed from this list.

I think AppFog's page is just as legal as pages of Nodejitsu, Heroku, and Google App Engine, they're all PaaS providers, why not allow a page for AppFog?

The make-or-break inclusion criterion is notability, which is the measurement of whether third-party reliable sources exist for the subject of the article. The other articles you pointed to are backed by third-party reliable sources. The fact you are the author puts you in a conflict of interest, so you need to tread carefully here.
What is needed is evidence that the series currently meets our inclusion guidelines, which focus on the subject's notability. That is, does Wikipedia even want an article on this series to begin with? The best measurement of notability is the existence of reliable third-party sources about the subject: things such as critical reviews, commentaries by reputable literary critics, news items about the influence the books had on its readers, etc. That's what Wikipedia readers expect to see. You must show that this actor currently meets our inclusion guidelines for actors, laid out here. If, as you say, "at the moment there is not much on the internet about him," then that alone is a good reason why there should not be a Wikipedia article about him.
I suggest you find press reactions to the press releases you included as sources, that is, articles written by the press itself in response to the announcements made by the producers. European Community Shipowners' Associations

Hello Blanchardb,

wouldn't it have been better to contact me before you make a ?

I am almost 50 years old, have studied economics (including logistics). I have never worked in the maritime sector but in other branches and there think I have quite some knowledge there.

Maritime policy is (afaik) no easy subject: there are 21 (!) EU countries who have Shipowners' Associations. Believe me: it's not easy to agree on common interests between those 21 - and very many themes / issues are 'ongoing'. Especially after the 'EU Eastward enlargement' in 2004, this co-ordination has become even more difficult.

Against the background of all this, it seems quite important to me that branches themselves try to coordinate, to find and to establish rules and all that. Shortly: I appreciate the work of the ECSA and of other similar associations (and they work in very difficult surroundings since 'Lehman Brothers' ...)

First of all, giving me "a vivid impression how complex many details are" will not affect the eligibility of this article. For one thing, all of the links are on ecsa.eu and not on websites of reliable third-party sources. Second, the goals of the organization are also irrelevant. The article should focus, instead, on which of these goals have been achieved or have resulted in a spectacular failure, as represented, again, in reliable third-party sources. It's not promoting anything...this is a real organization. Actually, it's the section "Reviews" that I'm mostly concerned about. It contains nothing but verbatim quotations from individual reviews, which is not what an encyclopedic article should have. That kind of material belongs on the back cover of the book's second printing. Perhaps if you were to rewrite that section entirely with an introduction stating whether the available reviews are good/bad, and give examples of reviews, with verbatim quotations limited to a single sentence, it would be an improvement. Welcome to the July 2013 issue of Ichthus. We focus on the chronology of Jesus, as well as looking back at the project content improved over the last month.

WP:X has gained another Featured Article, Gospel of the Ebionites, by Ignocrates. The Gospel of the Ebionites is the name scholars give to an apocryphal gospel that supposedly belonged to a sect known as the Ebionites. It consists of seven short quotations discovered in a heresiology known as the Panarion, written by Epiphanius of Salamis, and its original title remains unknown. The text is a gospel harmony composed in Greek, and is believed to have been written during the middle of the 2nd century.

St Mihangel's Church, Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn was promoted to Good Article status, as was two other welsh churches, St Enghenedl's Church, Llanynghenedl, and St Peter's Church, Llanbedrgoch.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is part of Saint Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev in Ukraine. It is a functioning monastery that dates back to the Middle Ages.

HISTORICAL JESUS

When did Jesus live? When did he die? How do we know? We do, in fact, have excellent information about the time intervals for the life and death of Jesus. As in other people who lived and died in the first century, this gives an approximate date range, but still, give or take 3-4 years and we have pretty good estimates confirmed by a number of really diverse sources, ranging from inscriptions in Delphi to Roman and Jewish sources. The Chronology of Jesus article discusses how a wide variety of Christian, Jewish and Roman sources are used to establish the time-frame for the life and death of Jesus.

And all of his data fits together. For instance, the chronology of Paul had been discussed based on the Book of Acts long ago, then the Delphi Inscription is found in the 20th century in the Temple of Apollo. And guess what.. it confirms it and totally dates his trial in Corinth, which helps reaffirm the date of the crucifixion of Jesus. The same date range is independently estimated from the writings of Josephus on the Baptist's death. And it fits Isaac Newton's astronomical models for the crucifixion date as well as the independent lunar calculations of Humphreys. As that article shows, all these dates just fit together.

This two volume book (with a very apt title) is gem-filled with scholarly research. Paul Maier's article in the first volume is a classic study on the chronology of Jesus and provides a useful summary of a number of issues.

Thank you for letting me know. I have been taking all possible steps to reduce the amount of promotion. I have changed a good deal of the page to focus it on the technology (which is what I am trying to write the article about), but please give me a chance to change things for the better before you delete the page outright. The article focuses on a technology that holds 4 United States Patents, and is in the process of receiving more, so I believe it is something that is useful to all people in that industry.

RV 'Pelagia'

Hello Blanchardb, you have proposed to delete my article about the RV ''Pelagia''. Well the good news is you red it. Of course I disagree with you. For a start there is a complete list of research vessels so only deleting the Pelagia page is not fair to my opinion. See : List_of_research_vessels_by_country Examples : CCGS Hudson or RV_Belgica I also have this article in Dutch, my native language. But we have a lot non-Dutch speaking people on board. That is why I made this page also in English. And before you ask it. The ship is a governmental ship so it is not advertisement.

Basically, you're writing an encyclopedia article, that is, an article intended for people who will never set foot on the ship. So the language spoken on board is of no consequence. What I mean in my deletion rationale is that the article doesn't even state what kind of research is conducted on board, and your only reference is the ship's Facebook page, which fails our verifiability requirements and is also not a third-party source. RE: BioLumix System Page

Blanchardb, I don't understand the problem. The article gives pertinent information on burgeoning technology that is of importance to the food science industry. It has patents because this is the first system to use many of these technologies, and it is reducing the length of time for microbiology testing from 7-10 days to 48 hours. I have been careful to include only sources that are independent and external, and I have supplied a list of roughly 10 articles, some of which are from peer-reviewed journals, for readers to link to. I am presenting only the facts and I am providing links for the reader to continue to read about the technology in an area that is completely unbiased and states only the facts. What else can I do?

You say the information you give is "of importance to the food science industry". What are the reliable third-party sources that agree with you about the importance of this "burgeoning technology"? I have also included journals like NutraCos from Italy, among others. This is an important technology, and I don't believe it is promotional to write an article about it.

Basically, the article should be about how the world at large sees you, not how you would want the world to see you. That's why we insist on third-party reliable sources, and by that I mean the kind of sources in which, if you want anything changed in them, the first step would be to contact your attorney. The sources also have to have an established reputation for fact-checking. That excludes nearly all blog material, especially where the author is identified only by some six-letter username. Basically, it means you have to use sources that wrote about your company without your permission. You have to report what those sources are saying, and you have to resist the temptation of adding anything that can be traced only to your company's literature.
If you can't find such sources, basically that means your product fails our definition of notable and there can't be an article on BioLumix.
Also, please consider our conflict of interest guidelines. While they do not prevent you from writing about the company, they do tell you to be extra careful. From the Editor

Welcome to the August 2013 issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter. We focus on the historical Jesus and reflect on the last month.

The project has another featured picture, The ruins of Holyrood Chapel, a digitisation of an oil-on-canvas painting. Our top-importance article, Jesus, has been nominated for Featured Article status, the discussion can be seen here; Knights of Colombus has also been nominated as a FAC.

Ecgbert (bishop) and Church architecture in Scotland have both this month achieved Good Article status.

Our project had several of its articles featured in the main page DYK section, including Hinckley Priory, Little Chapel, St Peter's Church, Ropsley, Chip Ingram, St John the Evangelist's Church, Corby Glen, Great George Street Congregational Church, St Mary's Church, Walton-on-the-Hill and Bunge church.

HISTORICAL JESUS

What was Jesus like? What did he preach? Did he claim to be the Messiah? Did he predict an apocalypse? What can we know about him outside a religious context? The Historical Jesus article discusses what can be known about Jesus with various degrees of probability. While scholars agree on the over all flow and outline of Jesus' life (his baptism by John, debated Jewish authorities, healings, and his crucifixion by Pilate) they have built various and diverging portraits of the rest of his life. These range from minimalist portraits that accept very little of the gospel accounts to maximalists who accept most of the accounts as historical.

The portraits of Jesus have at times been unwitting reflections of the researchers themselves, and Crossan once quipped that some authors "do autobiography and call it biography". However, the study of historical Jesus has made one thing clear: there is so much to learn about Jesus that the more one looks, the more there is to discover.

Here are a few pointers:
  • Wikipedia is not about how an organization wishes to be seen by the outside world, but rather about how the outside world actually sees it. So reliable third-party sources should be your primary sources of information.
  • Also, stating the objectives of an organization is widely regarded as inherently promotional. It's better to state past achievements instead, as reported, again, by the third-party sources mentioned above.
  • Finally, as a side note, you don't need to specify what Addis Ababa is. Your article is about an ophthalmology society, not about a city. Readers can always click on a link to get to the article on the city. --- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 16:40, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
