England Saxons

Hi, I do not think it is a good precedent to add a single sport team specific template to the generic flag template system. I think it opens the door for all sorts of cruft — for example, somebody once created a template for the "flag" of The Un-Americans wrestling team! Is there a specific problem you are trying to solve with that, or are you just looking to use {{ru}} as much as possible for "cleaner" wikicode? Thanks, Andrwsc (talk) 16:51, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Followup: at an absolute minimum, we should not use a non-standard country code abbreviation such as "SAX". It is terribly confusing to use invented codes instead of the standard ISO, IOC and FIFA codes, as per guidance on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template home page. Either we create the England Saxons country template, or we need to create three different templates for said team so that compatibility is seen through {{ru}}, {{ru-big}} and {{ru-rt}}. I think that creating one template to use with three is less cruftlike than creating three different templates. It also lends itself to being cleaner and more uniform.

Alternatively, we create three new templates, {{ruA}}, {{ruA-big}} and {{ruA-rt}}, for the A teams with alternate ids for the England A (now the Saxons), New Zealand A (Junior All Blacks) and South Africa A (Emerging Springboks). If you could put that in place, it could invalidate the necessity of the country data template specific for each user set. --Bob (talk) 17:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I think I like the latter approach best. It is similar to something I did for the football templates, where I created {{fbu}} for the various under-xx teams. It used an additional parameter to identify the alternate team—in this case, using the age as a selector (e.g. "20", "21", "17" etc. as appropriate). Ten teams: Scotland A, Ireland A, England Saxons, Wales A, France A, Italy A, Emerging Springboks, Argentina A, Junior All Blacks and Australia A are the ones that play most often, but, in theory, every playing country could have an 'A' side. --Bob (talk) 19:36, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. I see for many of them we've previously just wikilinked to the main team article with something like {{ru|Scotland}} A or {{ru|Scotland|name=Scotland A}}. Is there an intent to create seperate articles for all ten of these teams and go back and update those instances? Articles will eventually be created for all teams mentioned above. Especially as most of them play in recently created annual tournaments, as well as the long standing Six Nations A. Instead of creating any more templates, I think I can make it work by adding a new parameter to the existing {{ru}} set of templates. Ah, you know, it's going to be a lot more difficult than I first thought. The problem is that I think we want the display name to default to something like "Australia A" instead of just "Australia". All of the existing internal rendering templates (such as template:country flaglink and template:country bigflag) assume that you want to see the country name (only), regardless of the wikilink article name, and it would be messy to build something on top of that existing system. Ok, I went with a "plan B" approach to create template:ruA. Take a look and let me know if you think it's ok. Underneath it all, it still uses the flag template system, but instead of adding a pair of statements to every country data template (i.e. link alias-rugby union A = Scotland A national rugby union team and name alias-rugby union A = Scotland A) and building the ruA templates in a similar way to the normal ru templates, I went with a different approach. Other that the four special cases in that switch statement (for the three unusual team names and for Ireland's special flag), every other team will work using the standard format (e.g. one day we could add Fiji Warriors perhaps). Rugby Infobox Template

Hey GR, I've been directed to you by User:Shudde. I write on Austn Rugby League players but have an interest in Category:Dual code rugby internationals . For those I'm starting to use the wonderful infobox Template:Infobox Rugby biography rather than the RL box so I can detail full career history. In that box the State Representative section of a RL career is entitled " State of Origin". Whilst this is great for Austn post-1980 rep careers it's not accurate for pre-1980 when selection criteria was residential & not Origin based. Can you help me change this to "State Rep" or something similar. I know this doesn't accommodate Provincial/Regional rep appearances by Kiwi or Welsh dual-code ints but my understanding is that neither country has a rep level in between club & country. -Sticks66 (talk) 00:33, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Done, just add the parameter {{{sooteam pre-1980}}} and that will give you a different heading. The same exists for super rugby using the parameter {{{staterep}}}. I was having trouble finding confirmation on the club logos. Have now had it pointed out to me at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rugby_union#Navboxes_for_players. The reason for the revert was I was not finding the reason to why they could not be used, I have since been set straight on that matter. Apologies for any troubles the mass revert may have done, I now see that they indeed should not be used in this way (else risk them being removed from wikipedia and the club pages they are necessary for). AIDS map depends on which version of UNAIDS report?

Image:HIV_Epidem.png says that the source is "Based on data from UNAIDS." Is this the 2007 report (PDF) or some earlier version? I'm asking, because I want to put an accurate caption on that image in AIDS #Epidemiology. hello, User:Astrotrain is trying to place the Arms of Great Britain on the Scotland page. This user claims on User talk:Astrotrain that "They are the Queen's Royal Arms, and they were linked to the relevant page. You can find the compromise agreement in the archives of the Scotland talk page." I finally located in the archives [archives] a conversation which involved yourself. My understanding from reading these archives is that there was no clear compromise, and if there was, it was to keep the status quo and not add the arms. I am contacting you over this matter as User:Astrotrain is continuing to try to add the said arms and has today stated in Talk:Scotland "There was a clear consensus, you can ask any of the other editors. Importance rating

Glad to see someone attacking the importance ratings of rugby union articles. But I must disagree that any tour by a top class nation can be classed as low. In my opinion they are all mid class at lowest. Please get in touch if you disagree? FruitMonkey (talk) 20:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

• On the whole I think it's really good, there are areas where people are going to disagree, but I like the idea that players are not top rating, and there appears to be definite strategy to sorting this project out. Colour with Rugby navbox templates

I have added a vote at the rugby union community here on the subject that I believe that is at the very heart of the matter. I support one uniform coding for all clubs out there, however for me they should have their club colours, and not in purple. The RWC template does not allow the use of colours to the best of my knowledge. Cote d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast

I'll give you another couple of reasons why you are completely wrong. The Wikipedia entry for the country is at Côte d'Ivoire not "Ivory Coast", which is a redirect. Likewise the CIA Factbook refers to the country as Côte d'Ivoire see here. Yes, I've heard both, but you've not done your research here.

Just because the name is in French, doesn't mean it isn't used in English. After all we don't refer to Costa Rica as the Rich Coast, although I'm sure someone may start that trend sometimes. --MacRusgail (talk) 20:09, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

The region, and then the country, was originally known in English as "Ivory Coast". In October 1985, the government requested that the country be known in every language as Côte d'Ivoire without a hyphen between the two words.

Usage in English

Despite the Ivorian government's request, the English translation "Ivory Coast" (sometimes "the Ivory Coast") is still frequently used in English. The BBC usually uses "Ivory Coast" both in news reports and on its page about the country. Other organizations that use "Côte d'Ivoire" include the United States Department of State (which uses "Côte d'Ivoire" in formal documents, but uses "Ivory Coast" in many general references, speeches and briefing documents), FIFA and the IOC (referring to their national football and Olympic teams in international games and in official broadcasts), The Economist newsmagazine, Encyclopædia Britannica, and National Geographic Society.

As I have told you before - Cote d'Ivoire is the name used by Wikipedia itself, which means your move is of dubious merit in wikipedia terms. Since both names have been used in rugby circles, then this tips it firmly into the Cote D' Ivoire territory.

The CIA Factbook is used as an international reference on many matters, and I don't think you are in much of a position to criticise it on that score.

As for the commonality of the name that is not always a good guide. For example, the majority of English speakers use Holland to refer to the Netherlands, even though it should strictly only refer to part of them.

As I have stated on your talk page, there was a discussion regarding the move that was debated and then closed with the position to move the article. What happens with the countries page is irrelevant, as stated by the closing admin, to other articles title pages. The CIA does not name the rugby teams of the world. Do we rename all Chinese Taipei teams Taiwan because the CIA factbook lists the Republic of China as Taiwan? Do we rename the Republic of China article Taiwan because the CIA name it so? We should using your logic. In the case of the rugby article in question, WP:USEENGLISH and WP:COMMONNAME were both relevant during that discussion which led to a move that was not unilateral. As far as I am concerened, that move closed this argument. If you are pissed, take it up with the closing admin and the others that commented on that move. --Bob (talk) 20:58, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Infobox templates, County Unions and kits

Hi, I have little knowledge of how infoboxes are created or modified... I believe you created this template which is being used for various English Counties. I assume this is the correct use of your template; I have recently created Middlesex Rugby Football Union and applied it there. As many county RFUs originated as clubs and as counties have for years selected representative sides, would it be possible to include the kit information that you find in team infoboxes like Template:Infobox rugby team? It seems a bit unnecessary to create a seperate page for the team when they are essentially the same organisation as the union itself...!?

Template:Infobox Rugby World Cup

Just a quick question in regards to the Template:Infobox Rugby World Cup, which you have created. I seem to be unable to use the logosize parameter on it, despite it being there in the code. The image will always stay the same size. I've been using it for 2011 European Under-18 Rugby Union Championship and the logo there is to fuzzy in its current size, I would like to make it smaller. Sponsored vs non-sponsored names...

Why on earth are you moving specific season articles to non-sponsored names? Yes, the main article for the competition should be non-sponsored and generic if several names have been used, but for specific seasons, the sponsored name is invariably the one that is the WP:COMMONNAME. You might want to read that page again, in particularly the opening sentence: In general, it is perfectly acceptable to notify other editors of ongoing discussions, provided that it is done with the intent to improve the quality of the discussion by broadening participation to more fully achieve consensus. Regarding you most recent response to me, perhaps you could try to remain civil and refrain from unnecessary personal attacks. Clearly I am able to read. Obviously we have both interpreted something different from the discussion. All I am asking is for you to provide a direct link or quote to back up what you claim was agreed upon, as I, quite frankly, do not see any such consensus having been reached regarding specific article seasons and sponsored vs non-sponsored names. There is no policy regarding the use of sponsored names on Wikipedia. The only naming guideline we need to consider is WP:COMMONNAME. For the main article on the competition, this is generally the non-sponsored name (except Heineken Cup, which has never had any other name). For specific seasons, the sponsored name is generally the common name. Further, I notice you have been reminded about canvassing for votes above, so won't lecture you on this, however I find your entire attitude entirely uncooperative and patronising. Use of the French Coat of Arms

Hello Bob247!
Thank you for showing goodwill to contribute to the article French Armed Forces. However, the logo you put ([[File:Ministère de la défense et des anciens combattants logo.gif]]) is not suitable for many reasons:

• It is a copyrighted image and a free SVG image is available to illustrate the subject: [[File:Armoiries république française.svg]]
• The French Coat of Arms illustrates well the subject and allow the reader to clearly identify it, since we have adopted it to illustrate many articles related to the French Armed forces as you can see here: Portal:NATO/Member militaries, DPSD, Force de Frappe and even in the template of the French Armed Forces which is present on many pages: {{French military}}
• Based upon other countries Armed Forces articles, a lot of them start with their seal like Spanish Armed Forces, British Armed Forces, Polish Armed Forces, Italian Armed Forces, ....
• This Coat of Arms is being officially used by the UN alongside with the other countries Coat of Arms.

I also strongly advise you to establish a consensus in the talk page if you really think this copyrighted image should be used.

Rugby union positions

Hey Bob. I am working through the above article, trying to add refs and pics where possible and weed out some of the original research that has crept in. I was hoping to change the article titles to tidy it up a bit and thought that I would substitute the positional templates you implemented a few years ago at the same time. My idea is to direct the positions to Wing (rugby union), Fullback (rugby union) etc and then from there onto the section within the article if no article exists. As you created the templates I am hoping you would be lend your opinion here Talk:Rugby union positions#Section Names (yet again). I have to ask if you read what you posted? capitalize nouns in the expression that taken as a whole is a proper name, and in addition to that always capitalize the first word of the expression even if it is not a noun. Regarding rugby templates

Please do not accuse me of vandalism when i clearly had no such intention - especially after i clearly stated the reasons for my reversion. Just because rugby templates do not currently have colour, does not mean this is the correct layout for the rugby templates. Every other sport i have seen on Wikipedia has a template colour scheme. I think it is about time rugby catch-up with the rest of Wikipedia's layout for sporting templates.

Regarding your claim that the Panasonic template is unreadable: Do i have to prove to one person that black text on a blue background is unreadable? If so, then how do i prove this. Hello. Firstly, thankyou gadfium for your support. Okay, i have taken the template issue for further judgement here. And regarding the Panasonic colours: i did as you said and checked for their colour compatibility. The result was that they are incompatible. However, this is not a major issue as the black text can be exchanged for yellow (initially used for the border) - which is compatible.
