PR Tchaikovsky and the Five

Thanks very much for all the work you're putting into the PR for Tchaikovsky and the Five, and my apologies for making you work as hard as you are on it. I suspect this is far more work than you had intended, but it is appreciated. I am more than a little embarrassed that the article is apparently as much of mess as it is, but you're right, it is hard to throw away thoroughly researched material. Seriously, though, one quick question regarding the Legacy section. How much of what was originally there for the Belyayev circle was on the mark per your suggestion? Anything that was cut? Thanks very much for the suggestion. Here's how I amended it:

The initial hostility of the Five against Tchaikovsky was mitigated by Tchaikovsky's improved relationships first with Balakirev and then with Rimsky-Korsakov, the latter of who substantially embraced the cosmopolitan conservatory-based approach, as distinct from pure Russian nationalism. The Five dispersed as a unit, but were replaced by the Belyalev circle of younger composers that grew around Rimsky-Korsakov. This group, while writing in a nationalistic style pioneered by Rimsky-Korsakov and Balakirev,[100] was much more accomodating of Western compositional practices as personified by the music of Tchaikovsky.[101] Rimsky-Korsakov wrote about this tendency:

At this time [approximately 1892] there had begun to be noticable a considerable cooling-off and even a somewhat inimical attitude toward the memory of the Five in the time of Balakirev. On the contrary, a worship of Tchaikovsky and a tendency toward eclecticism were growing stronger. Nor could one help noticing the predilection (which sprang up in our circle) for Italian and French music of the era of the wig and the farthingale [that is, the eighteenth century], music introduced by Tchaikovsky in his Queen of Spades and Iolanta.[102]

As a result of this influence plus their academic training from Rimsky-Korsakov, especially in the case of Glazunov, these composers combined the best compositional techniques of the Five and Tchaikovsky in their music.[103] The Belyalev circle continued to influence the development of Russian music until well into the 20th century.[104]

Peter Heywood map

Peer Review of William and Mary alumni

Thanks for the insights! I've just now gotten time to get back to that list. I've fixed almost all of the disambig. problems. I'm going to try to work out the few broken links. I don't know why all the sports links for the football players appear broken when they work for me too.

As to the notability issue, I'm 100% with you! For national political leaders, I think the list is okay. But, further down on the chain of command, things get a bit hairy. Some of the authors, athletes, academics, and low-level political figures are really dubious. The fellow who started that list, however, has a temper tantrum if anything gets cut from the list. His position is that every person with a Wikipedia entry MUST be notable for purposes of the list.

Heywood map and PR

I have made the base map - what do you think? WHat should be labeled? I was going to add the arrows in three different colors (Bounty before mutiny, Bounty after mutiny, and the longboat).

Tofua (near site of mutiny) 175°07'W, 19°75'S
Tubuai (abortive refuge for Christian's band) 150°00'W, 23°00'S
Pitcairn Island 130°06'W, 25°04'S
Endeavour Strait between Australia and New Guinea
Coupang on Timor at 123°35'W 10°11'S

OK, I will read the article and see of there are any other labels that come to mind. I might also make a small (red?) circle around some of the islands as they are quite small otherwise. Thanks for you feedback. I've acted on nearly everything. However, I'm stuck on some of the Bayreuth premiere dates. I've searched the Times and NYT archives and asked at the Wagner Project talk page but I've not been able to unearth the dates for Mastersingers or Dutchman. For Tristan I have a likely date of 25 July (when Liszt attended just before his death) but haven't found a categorical statement. I'm reluctant to insert any exact dates for premieres until I can fill in all 20 slots for world and Bayreuth premieres. Have you got any other ideas for solving this or any comment on my changes? This suggests 23 July 1888. I can't see an indication of the editor who compiled these letters. It looks like proper academic work but I doubt it will be accepted as a reliable source without a name. I have now processed your latest comments and made a couple of other changes, such as moving the picture of the Wagners up. Biggest problem I had meeting your requirements is that I don't personally have a single source that gives all the premieres. I have therefore used several.

I know you're probably pretty busy, Brian, but just in case you're interested, I've just listed Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at peer review. It's a pretty straightforward article, so it should be a lot less work than Tchaikovsky and the Five was; my main concern is avoiding the Alma problem, as you'll see in the write-up on the PR page.
