Take part in a survey

Hi Catrìona

We're working to measure the value of Wikipedia in economic terms. We want to ask you some questions about how you value being able to edit Wikipedia.

Our survey should take about 10-15 minutes of your time. We hope that you will enjoy it and find the questions interesting. All answers will be kept strictly confidential and will be anonymized before the aggregate results are published. Regretfully, we can only accept responses from people who live in the US due to restrictions in our grant-based funding.

As a reward for your participation, we will randomly pick 1 out of every 5 participants and give them $25 worth of goods of their choice from the Wikipedia store (e.g. Wikipedia themed t-shirts). Note that we can only reward you if you are based in the US.

Click here to access the survey: https://mit.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eXJcEhLKioNHuJv

Deletion discussion about Wikipedia coverage of firearms

Hello, Catrìona,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Wikipedia coverage of firearms should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wikipedia coverage of firearms .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Slatersteven (talk) 12:24, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

I raised concerns on the (now-deleted talk page) about mentioning and wikilinking users by name, but I don't think Catrìona intended it as an attack page in any way. --Pudeo (talk) 00:25, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Buidhe/Archives,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Voting now open for "Military historian of the year" and "Military history newcomer of the year" awards

Voting for our annual Military historian of the year and Military history newcomer of the year awards is open until 23:59 (GMT) on 30 December 2018. Why don't you vote for the editors who you believe have made a real difference to Wikipedia's coverage of military history in 2018? MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:16, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Do you know how to do that star thing?

I've never given an editor a star and don't know how the system works but I wanted to give you props for your edit here.[[1]] Thank you, Springee (talk) 19:04, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

BTW, your comments are a reminder to myself and others why AGF is so important. As one who was involved it's easy to assume POV push etc in such articles and reply with low level or even open hostility. Your responses to comments etc makes it clear that we don't always have the same base information and thus we shouldn't assume the other editor is pushing vs just writing what seems apparent to them. I'm saying this because I initially read your work with a cynical eye. I'm happy to see my cynicism was unfounded. Springee (talk) 19:09, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Many Thanks

@Catriona: Many thanks and a great redo on John Ferrar. Much cleaner. Would it be inappropriate to make a mention in the first heading along the lines of Not to be confused with John Ferrar the elder of Lonson, Esquire father of {{William Farrar(settler|Councillor William Farrar]].

There is a reason for that. A major error was made in the 18th Century by erstwhile genealogists who thought that William the Settler was a brother of Nicholas Ferrar the elder, father of {{Nicholas Ferrar]] because of the existence of a letter in the Records of the Virginia Company, #696 which is not linkable. This William, an attorney, set sail from London to Virginia on a information gathering mission and never returned. It is not known if he died on the way to or from Virginia. This has resulted in unfortunate circumstances like a "cousin" naming his son Nicholas. And to this day, that belief is scattered all over the internet, even though the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, amongst others, have since corrected the idea (originally perpetrated nationally by the same). I know the purpose of WP is not to set the record straight, But a one line sentence might helpful to others seeking information, which is what WP is regularly and routinely used for. What do you think?Oldperson (talk) 22:07, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

@Oldperson: It depends on whether the other person is notable. If they're not notable, there shouldn't be a hatnote. If they are notable, then the hatnote is usually only helpful if the other article exists. Catrìona (talk) 22:49, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
@Catriona: That's right. I forgot all about that. I tried to put a hatnote on the John Ferrar page but there is something wrong with my syntaxOldperson (talk) 23:24, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Shoah, Claude Lanzmann

Howdy. If you haven't already watched it, Claude Lanzmann's 1985 film Shoah and the accompanying book (Shoah: An Oral History) would probably be useful to you. The film deals chiefly with the Shoah in Poland and has interviews of victims, perpetrators and eyewitnesses. Rudolf Vrba mentions Freddy Hirsch by name no less than eight times. The film is around 9.5 hours in length, though, so you'll have to clear some time on your calendar to watch it all. Here are "Eras" One and Two on YouTube. Best wishes and continued fortune. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 14:42, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Request on 01:04:15, 4 January 2019 for assistance on AfC submission by ControlSee

Hi, I see that you have not accepted my article on All These Creatures, citing that the references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article. However this submission includes the same and more references of the previous Palme d'Or winning films of previous years. For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Gentle_Night

Can you please tell me why this article is deemed not worthy of wikipedia and previous Cannes short film winners are? Especially as this article contains the same references they do?

Thanks

ControlSee (talk) 01:04, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

@ControlSee: Other stuff exists is not considered a good argument for notability. The problem is that you have not given references for this film that are a) independent, b) reliable, and c) have significant coverage of the subject. The best place to look is for reviews in independent publications. If these don't exist, the film is not notable. buidhe (formerly Catrìona) 01:09, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Bhuide

Happy New Year. I was looking at the review of MX's GAN and thinking that this Bhuide editor is a cheeky monkey - they seem to be taking claim for some of Catrìona's articles. All is revealed. Would that be Scots Gaelic? As in Beinn Bhuide and Meall Buidhe? Gog the Mild (talk) 04:10, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

@Gog the Mild: Yes, yes, and yes (although Catrìona is also a Gaelic name). I changed my username because people were pinging User:Catriona by accident. "Buidhe" is Scottish Gaelic for "yellow", so it shows up in place names, either Buidhe or Bhuidhe depending on whether the previous word is masculine or feminine. It also has an association with luck, and who doesn't need more of that? Anyway—have a great 2019. buidhe (formerly Catrìona) 04:29, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Good. Nice choice. (I have fond memories of both of my trips up Meall Bhuidhe; and more mixed ones about Beinn Bhuidhe, where it all got a bit "interesting".) I didn't realise that it was associated with luck; and had never understood why there is sometimes an h and sometimes not; my lesson for today. Gog the Mild (talk) 00:41, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

I realized quickly after starting the draft that she wouldn’t meet GNG but didn’t want to just abandon it like that. But she does meet NMODEL, and lately around here “some” people seem with dogged stubbornness seem to believe, especially over at the current AfD that I nominated for Kätlin Aas who has absolutely no independent reliable sources, no significant coverage, and not even routine coverage, that if a model meets NMODEL then she doesn’t have to meet GNG. So, given the circumstances, what should I do? An RfC? Trillfendi (talk) 02:27, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Trillfendi Hmm. I always thought that GNG outweighed the subject specific guidelines. However, if NMODEL is too loose and letting cases like this through, then an RfC to tighten this would be in order. There's no use in permastubs, and, imho, one can't write a good article from only one substantial source. buidhe (formerly Catrìona) 02:34, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Buidhe That is exactly what I’ve been trying to say to them this whole time. In trying to bring this info up to them and do an RfC over that other article (and in case the “feds” are watching, I’m not in any way shape or form trying to canvass you for that AfD or anything related to it. Seriously. I’m just letting you know that I took your opinion into account) the narrative has become that I’m “seething” about the article being declined (obviously I knew the article was gonna get declined for the very reason you said), for giving numerous examples of comments by other administrators that GNG > NMODEL and somehow it’s “inappropriate” for me to do an RfC during AfD, and that I’m mad things aren’t “going my way”. If trying to make them see that NMODEL isn’t exempt from GNG isn’t going my way then they’re right on that. But I’m also trying to get some type of clarity on if that article is kept, should that standard be applied to every single model article. I trust administrators opinions more than anyone else’s and I’m going off what I’ve been told for years. Trillfendi (talk) 05:06, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Theresienstadt Ghetto

On 17 January 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Theresienstadt Ghetto, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Nazi authorities promoted Theresienstadt Ghetto (caricature shown) as a "spa town" and "retirement settlement" for Jews? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Theresienstadt Ghetto), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Theresienstadt Ghetto

Hi Buidhe, thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia; I found this an interesting article. I notice you reverted my edits, but don't fully understand your comments. The logic for my changes was:

  • "beautification" is not a great translation of "Verschönerung" in this context. The Nazis implemented a 'clean up' both in the literal sense and metaphorical senses. I accept there may be a better word than either of those.
  • "Prominent" in the middle of a sentence should not be capitalised. If its a quotation, there should be a citation.
  • "superior quarters" is an odd turn of phrase in English. We don't generally talk about living in quarters (unless someone is in the Forces) and "superior" makes it sound as if their original accommodation was actually pretty good, which it clearly wasn't. Bermicourt (talk) 21:18, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
@Bermicourt: I'm glad you liked the article! I am a major contributor and got it to GA status.
  1. I don't know enough German to say what the correct translation for "Verschönerung" is. However, in the context of Theresienstadt it is typically translated as "beautification" in English language sources. See, for example [2][3][4]
  2. Likewise, in sources discussing Theresienstadt the "Prominent" prisoners are typically capitalized. However, after checking more sources it seems they differ, so I don't mind if you make the change so long as you apply it to the entire article so it's internally consistent.
  3. I would that the third change you suggested is an improvement. buidhe (formerly Catrìona) 05:11, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Cool - well done. I must get some of mine to GA status some time. About "beautification": if the sources widely use it, then that's fine. It's really quite a literal translation, though, and doesn't IMHO take the context into account. But hey ho. Re "Prominent", I guess it depends on whether it's part of a fuller phrase i.e. "Prominent Jews" used in the sources, in which case the "" may need to be around both words. Finally, I think you've missed a word out because I can't tell whether you agree that the third change is an improvement or not! Thanks for being understanding. Bermicourt (talk) 09:34, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
@Bermicourt: Sorry, the third one should read "I would agree...". buidhe (formerly Catrìona) 09:41, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Probably trivial, but "beautification" is what Herman Wouk uses in War and Remembrance. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:38, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. GAR for Molders

Hi Buidhe, my reading of the requirements for delisting an article that has been classed as GA prior to FAC or Milhist ACR delisting is that the article goes back to GA and then a GAR process is undertaken to delist it to whatever class it becomes under WikiProject assessment scales. A GAR can be done individually or as a community process. In this case, an individual GAR seems the most streamlined way to go given there has been good community consensus for delisting at FAR and ACR. I don't wish to be overly bureaucratic about it, but we should follow the established processes for these things, IMHO. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:39, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
