Re: Locomotives infobox

Actually, that's something that I was thinking about recently for some of the North American locomotives and models that I've worked on (such as John Bull (locomotive), which I initially wrote and took through to WP:FA status). I haven't gotten very far in putting a suitable infobox together yet; the first task that I was going to do along these lines was to investigate the various infoboxes that are already used on articles here and on other wikis. I noticed the boxes on the Polish articles as I selected the fact for today's update to the Did you know section of Portal:Trains (and I used a fact from EU06 today). They look very similar to those that I've seen on similar British Rail locomotive articles.

As to design, I tend to take a more minimalist approach with colors. My first thought was to build something like {{Infobox Ship}} (as can be seen on USS Edson (DD-946)). Whatever we come up with for a design (which should probably eventually reside at {{Infobox Locomotive}}), I'd think that we should be able to use the same infobox when we're writing about an entire class of locomotive (like EMD GP30) or a single locomotive (like Union Pacific 1982). The only real issue that I could foresee is displaying different data for steam vs. diesel vs. electric; a steam locomotive's fire grate area specification, for example, doesn't apply when you're writing about a diesel or electric locomotive. I suppose this could be done with a large number of optional parameters like {{Infobox Ship}}, but I haven't looked at that template's code yet. Slambo (Speak) 18:52, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Since I've got some time while I wait for another project to compile, I've started experimenting with optional parameters in a template like {{Infobox Ship}} uses. My experimental template is at User:Slambo/Infobox Locomotive, and my usage test is at User:Slambo/Template usage test. I've started it off with details for a steam locomotive, but plan to add in details for electric and diesel shortly. Slambo (Speak) 21:30, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

PKP trains

Sorry to stop your stirling work. As I understand - articles are usually "Class Z" with a capital "C", e.g. PKP Class EU06. This is how it is in the UK, it may be different in Poland? Our Phellap 20:26, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey, good job on the PKP Intercity article! Looks great. All the best, – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 19:28, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
