The petition is part of the predestination. Petitioning does not assure God's mercy but, on the other hand, willful disobedience does assure condemnation. Submission to God's sovereignty is the key; no one individual on this earthly realm can be confident of his own inclusion in the Kingdom of Heaven but he can, through habitual sin, ensure the demise of his eternal soul.
