Archiving Mythology of LOST[edit]

Thanks for archiving that. I'm still pretty new at this and don't know how to do it but knew it needed to be done. Whippletheduck (talk) 04:30, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lost (TV series)[edit]

Are you planning to delete Category:Lost (TV series) characters? I noticed that you are adding Category:Lost (TV series) to articles of this category. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:48, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh that wasnt what i had in mind. I thought it might unnerve some that my name was popping up over alot of the lost articles. I just keep trying to find an all encompassing area that holds all the lost articles. even the project lost page states there are 145 or so but does not say what they are. At the top of the lost (tv series) cat it states all articles related to lost. I was just trying to place them all there. I believe the lost (tv series) characters is great but was hoping this would be the all encompassing one with the characters as a sub cat. I hope im not inm error . thanks B.s.n. (R.N.) 14:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Then there is no reason to overcategorise. Please read WP:OVERCAT. Category:Lost (TV series) characters is a subcat of Category:Lost (TV series), so there is no reason to add both categories in articles. That's the reason the category was not already added in all these articles. Please revert your last edits. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 14:12, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
makes sense. will do. thanks for your help. still new and just trying to help B.s.n. (R.N.) 14:24, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To our newest Rollbacker[edit]

I have just granted you rollback rights because I believe you to be trustworthy, and because you have a history of reverting vandalism and have given in the past or are trusted in the future to give appropriate warnings. Please have a read over WP:ROLLBACK and remember that rollback is only for use against obvious vandalism. Please use it that way (it can be taken away by any admin at a moment's notice). You may want to consider adding Rollback and User rollback to your userpage. Any questions, please drop me a line. Best of luck and thanks for volunteering! wadester16 15:41, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will read up and use it wisely B.s.n. (R.N.) 15:43, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Insulin glargine[edit]

Hello, you reverted my removal of "relatively" in the Insulin glargine article. I must admit I don't agree with your revert. Relatively signifies "with respect to some comparison standard". If that standard is mentioned explicitly, relatively is redundant; it doesn't even make sense in my opinion. It is either the same, higher of lower than some definite standard ("standard NPH insulin"). Relatively doesn't mean anything here. Words that might express the correct meaning could be a bit higher, slightly higher, far higher, etc. Pietrow 11:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I understand the fact that many people use the word "relatively" far too often when comparing something; however, I strongly believe the word does serve a useful purpose here. The reason it is relatively higher is because this is not an absolute statement. As with many medications (almost all), comparisons on the pharmacokinetic effects for one person can and may differ greatly from another person. It is incorrect to state that "The peakless profile of Lantus also enables the dose to be higher than standard NPH insulin" because this is not true in all cases. a bit higher, slightly higher, far higher, etc. or incorrect also. It takes out the relative standard deviation that is used with the population of people involved. Maybe it can be worded differently, but for now removing the word changes the meaning of the sentence and the action of the drug. If a better solution is availible please correct this if it is indeed in error. I am not one to edit war or undo ones edits of good faith just because I dont agree with them. Just feel this word is justified at this time. Thanks B.s.n. (R.N.) 11:56, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Edit warring is the last thing I have time for. However, I still feel relatively is not the word we appear to be looking for, as I certainly would never have understood the correct message. With your explanation in mind, I suggest replacing it simply by "For most patients, the peakless profile of Lantus also enables the dose to be higher than standard NPH insulin". Pietrow 14:36, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Odd that with over 3 million articles and countless billions of words within those we have spent this amount of time on just this one word. Thanks for the insight. I'll go ahead and change it to your suggestion if you haven't aready done so. B.s.n. (R.N.) 15:51, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's true, but I like to think the article is infinitesimally better as a result. Best regards, Pietrow 17:52, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chanel (dog)[edit]

Hiya.

Nice new article, Chanel (dog), and I noted your comment, "sources, and cites incoming" but because Wikipedia is live, new articles can be swiftly tagged, even deleted, if they lack references from the outset.

To solve this specific case, I added a couple of refs, see this edit.

In future, I'd recommend you get a new article into an 'acceptable state' in your user space before making it live.

For example, if you create User talk:B.s.n.R.N./test page, you could write a new article there, work on it, add refs, and then move it to mainspace to make it live.

The easiest way to make such pages might be to add some links on your own user page, so that you have them in a 'handy place' - for example, you could put this somewhere on your user page;

*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./test1
*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./test2
*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./test3
*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./foo
*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./baa
*User talk:B.s.n.R.N./whatever

(of course, you can use whatever names you wish)

These would appear as red links because they don't exist, but you could then easily make the pages by clicking the link.

When it is ready to go live, it is better to use 'move' than copy/paste so that the history is retained.

I hope this helps; I'm really glad that you've decided to contribute an interesting new article, and I'll be glad to assist in any way that I can. If you could expand it more within the next week, I suggest you nominate it as a Did You Know... so that it appears on the main page. For more help, you can either;

 • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
 • Use a helpme - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put helpme, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
 • Talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  10:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I just got excited because it was the first time I went to look up something on Wikipedia and it wasn't there. Thank you for helping with notibility while I get my cites under order and not "biting" me for posting the article too swiftly. I will read up on the information you provided. Thanks again for your help B.s.n. R.N. 10:57, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Brake peacocking[edit]

B.s.n.R.N - you may want to read what has been posted on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jeff_G. about Mark Brake. Thanks Mightyboosh99 (talk) 11:58, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies for getting caught up in all of this; I feel you're probably more qualified to repair the ongoing damage the vandals are causing. Sorry for muddling the issue. That said, however, if you're going to leave notices on my usertalk telling me I've been reverted for helping to revert the strange tide of section-renamings, please assist me in improving the content of the page and fixing the damage being done. If I'm doing something wrong, please help me do better by explanation. Thanks. --Thurinym (talk) 06:39, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About the blanked page[edit]

No it was no problem. That is actually my cousins wiki page he told me to erase everything for him and i did so. I will re-erase again.

And also how did you make you signature like that?? --Dwayneflanders (talk) 03:53, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would use a summary in the edit so patoling editers wont revert it again in good faith. It's difficult telling good faith edits from vandalism without them. As far as the signature, it was really testing out what works and what doesn't. If you go to My preferences on the top of your page it will allow you to change it. Also looking at others editors signatures in the edit mode will help with suggections if you find one you like and wish to modify into your own. B.s.n. Mark Brake talkpage[edit]

Hi there. I have declined your prod of this talk page on purely procedural reasons, as that template is only meant for mainspace articles, and not pages in the Talk: space. However, I have created a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Talk:Mark Brake which might very well end with the same result. Just a heads up for next time =). Can we please move to deletion? Rosit (talk) 13:28, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wish we could, but it seems to be backlogged. A request for deletion has been made, the editors involved have debated it, and you have stated that you have emailed an oversight. I have also submitted a request for review with the BLP noticeboard. I do not see what else can be done. I suppose you could just remove the information with an edit summary while awaiting an outcome B.s.n. R.N.contribs 00:52, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) OK, my apologies; I will also retract, and my warning to Leuko as well. Somehow I stumbled into a minefield on this particular topic -- I guess I shouldn't be totally shocked -- and have, generally, just been trying to remind editors of our WP:PRESERVE policy, which precludes deleting content, especially well sourced content, willy-nilly. It's part of one of our oldest policies -- older than Wikipedia even having a concept of policies -- but it often gets lost in the POV-warring shuffle. -- 209.6.238.201 (talk) 22:50, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondered why you restored the text after the creator blanked the page? Page blanking by the creator when they are the sole contributor is usually taken as a sign that they want the page deleted, hence the existence of the db-blanked template. – ukexpat (talk) 15:29, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion Converted to PROD: Understanding harry potter[edit]

Hello B.s.n.R.N., and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I have changed a page you tagged (Understanding harry potter) from being tagged for speedy deletion to being tagged for proposed deletion. The speedy deletion criteria are very narrow to protect the encyclopedia, and do not fit the page in question. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. Thanks again! SoWhy 08:06, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to undo multiple edits?[edit]

Hi, sorry I don't know who else to ask about this but I've seen you do it before so I thought I would ask you. When someone vandalizes a page with multiple edits, how do you undo them all without having to go through them all one-by-one and undo them?

By the way, you sent me a message saying I vandalized a page but I didn't do that, I undid the vandalism of someone else.Aelius28 (talk) 08:44, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have you applied for rollback privileges yet?. If multible users have recently attacked a page it gives you the option to "restore" the text to an earlier verison. you can request at Wikipedia: Rollback. Also sorry for the warning. Edit-conflicts occur occasionally with Huggle. Thank you for letting me know. B.s.n. R.N.contribs 08:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, bound to happen with all the policing you do, which is very honourable by the way. I haven't tried to get Rollback privileges yet, no, but if I don't manage to I can't undo mass vandalism except manually? For example, the article for George Carman I noticed just tonight had a series of something like 50 vandalistic edits in the course of almost a month without notice. It would take a while to undo it all... Aelius28 (talk) 09:01, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In that case. until you get Rollback - if you decide to - you can got to the history and view the copy that you want to revert it to. Then copy the edit-text, and go then go back to the article. Edit the article and paste the copied versing with an edit summary explaining that your reverting to an earlier version. If it keeps happening you can request a semi-protection for the page at WP:RPP. There may be easier ways, but I don't know of them besides rollback or Huggle. B.s.n. R.N.contribs 09:10, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, if you go to the last clean edit, then there will still be an "edit" tab at the top which will allow you to edit that particular revision. Copying and pasting is a tricky proposal, since it's very easy to miss something important. - Jredmond (talk) 21:32, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image problem[edit]

Can you please add a better description of the image File:Completion Photo Resized.jpg? "Pressroom" is a pretty useless description to other editors. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 05:16, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

I've noticed your username popping up on my watchlist in reverting edits on myriad articles and just wanted to thank you for your efforts. Sometimes late at night, I think I'm all alone here but lately, you've been busy!! Your work is appreciated. P.S. I LOVE your userpage style. Did you do that? Thank you. Vandals can be a pain sometimes, but I heard some really good editors started out as vandals. hmmmmmm. I play around with my user page from time to time, but I didn't create it myself. I've looked at many other users' pages and kind of used parts of their templetes as sort of a launching point. Calmer Waters 22:34, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

The Bloody Chamber[edit]

YOu just removed a constructive (albeit long) edit. Why? i cant see anything wrong with it. KiraChinmoku (T, ¤) 22:16, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A quick look at the edit shows he copy and pasted a prior edit. over and over and over.....again 71+ KB of same 1 paragraph, A form of disruptive vandalism seen quite frequently Calmer Waters 22:18, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, i see it now. I didnt read all of the edit (granted it was very long) thus missed that. I shall keep an eye out on long edits from now on. Thanks. KiraChinmoku (T, ¤) 22:31, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :). Vandals can get tricky by changing the style of there attacks like this 5. Thanks for helping with the good fight Calmer Waters 22:37, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear B.s.n.R.N., I think at this point that the anon you and I have been reverting at Mental mapping is no longer vandalizing. I think he is just having difficulty with the WP input process. Perhaps we should stop sitting on top of him and let him finish? (P.S. Please respond here. I will have your page watchlisted.) — SpikeToronto (talk) 22:51, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, he doesn’t read his (anonymous) talk page! He’s already at Level 4 in warnings and has not tried to communicate with either of us. Which probably also means he doesn’t read the edit summaries either. So we will have no way to communicate with him on how to input his stuff correctly. What do you suggest? — SpikeToronto (talk) 22:54, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thats a tough one. I say we just let him edit it and check it tommorrow or keep an eye on it and AGF since it doesn't appear he is vandalising. Unfortunately he will keep appearing on HUGGLE and will most likely be reported soon. Do you think I should remove my warnings? I will attempt to leave a message and hopefully he will look at it, if you haven't already. Thanks Calmer Waters 23:01, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am not going to revert my warnings since their presence on his/her page lets him/her know that not editing correctly has consequences. It should encourage him/her to read the welcome-anon that I put at the top of his/her page, and/or to contact one of us for help. Also, below the warnings, I put a comment telling him/her this very thing. (Man! Political correctness uses a lot of slashes!) Perhaps you could go to his talk page and tell me what you think, or add your own comment. Thanks! — SpikeToronto (talk) 23:15, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. As for Huggle, it was Huggling that led me to that page! When it gave me the two diffs, I could sense that something more was going on there, so I dealt with it manually. There was another editor before him/her playing around in there. That’s why, in the end, I used Popups to revert to the last clean version. — SpikeToronto (talk) 23:15, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. It almost looks like it could have been text taken directly from a text book. I hope we haven't lost a content contributer; however, maybe since there have not been any further edits, he is reading the links you provided. Hopefully, rather than the alternative of giving up editing all together. I have seen users using Popups from time to time and they do seem handy for reverting to a previous version. Haven't gotten around to learning the tool yet. There are so many pieces to Wikipedia, its difficult to grasp them all. I have decided to start out slow ( being new -less than 3 months) with small and pick up skills along the way. Just start diping my hand into WP: DYK and creating articles. I have had every image I've uploaded so far deleted (uggh) so thats the next area to work on. I see you have been on Wikipedia for quite awhile and have been a prior RfA candidate. When you decide to run again, I wish you the best of luck (well not luck per say, but I'm sure you know what I mean :)}. Again Thanks Calmer Waters 23:52, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I don’t want him to think that we were biting a newbie. It really did look like vandalism at first, though. Also, I agree with you that there may have been copyright issues with his later attempts inasmuch as it looked copied out of a textbook. Popups is pretty easy. If you go here, you can read a discussion with the chap that taught me how to use it. It’s a powerful tool, but you can always undo your Popups revert if you act quickly. As for your images, if you took the photos yourself, it may just have been that you did not fill out the copyright declaration releasing it for use on WP. Finally, I was never an RfA candidate. I could never see that happening. (See here.) By the way, how do I go about getting one of those committed identities? Is it easy? Thanks! — SpikeToronto (talk) 00:17, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't ever say never. I think voting admins are smart enough to see through apparent attacks such as that. :) Calmer Waters 05:52, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Abortion-Feticide linking[edit]

I linked abortion to the feticide page because abortion is not legal in all countries and may be prohibited under laws that consider it to be fetal homicide.

Now obviously that is not the same in all countries. However, that is why I chose "feticide," as opposed to "fetal homicide" or "abortion." "Feticide" is a neutral descriptive term that fits Wikipedia's goal of an internationally accepted framework. Spoisp (talk) 05:00, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Spoisp[reply]

Thats a sound reason. It just appeared that these links were being changed and without an edit summary explaining why it was difficult to know the intention behind these changes. I'm sure your aware that some don't have the most noble reasons for such changes. Thanks for taking the time to reply back to me. I would only suggest that when making changes to an item that may be controversial (such as the wikilink changes from abortion to feticide) to add an edit summary. It is only a suggestion to help keep issues like this to a minimum. You seem to be well versed in this area and I thank you for your contributions and your understanding. Cheers Calmer Waters 05:36, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Please be more careful when approving DYK hooks like List of Polish cities damaged in World War II (you passed it when it looked like this). "Many" was not accurate (six cities out of about seventy-five is certainly not "many") and the article was in severe need of a copyedit before an appearance on the main page (for example, there were eight uses of the word "destroyed" in the lead-in). Thanks, —Ed (talkcontribs) 00:13, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

what I had meant was to change it that many polish cities were damaged. Not that many of the polish cities were 90% damaged. Reading back I can understand that it may not have read that way. That was the reason I suggested an alternate that was also inline sourced and accurate. I appoligize you the mistake. I will be more watchful in the future. Thank you. Did you know[edit]

I know that everyone find different things interesting, but in the DYK section I added an article about Expanded genetic code yesterday, but it did not get any attention/approval, which I find really odd as synthetic biology, the re-engineering of biology, is a really popular topic on new scientist/scientific American. Why is that? Thanks. --Squidonius (talk) 12:02, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not take it personal. It can take sometimes a considerable amount of time to view an article, assess its prose, verify date, the hook, the sources, and any potential issues such as POV. If you have posted it yesterday it is not at all odd for it not to be assessed yet. I know I try to assess entries that are older nominations first. Then articles that I have addressed an issue with that the editor has stated has been corrected, or replied with further information on the questions I raised. Your entry will be assessed I assure you. It just take a little while in some cases. I will take a look at it a little later if not already done. And again thank you for contribution to DYK. Take care Calmer Waters 12:31, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sanborn images[edit]

Hi, thanks for your work on the Sanborn-related articles, and congrats on the DYK! However, please be careful about using images of Sanborn's work. Without his explicit permission, it is not allowed to use photos of his artwork on Wikipedia, as he sees it as a violation of his copyright. It would probably be best for you to delete any such images that you have uploaded, unless you can produce an email or other documentation showing that he has authorized the free license on the photos. Let me know if you have any questions, --Elonka 01:25, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't aware of this. I was aware that you have a great amount of knowledge of this individual. Your website is wonderful and I was planning on trying to get his article to FA status within the year. It is troubling that he feels this way. I thought that if an individual takes a picture of something in a public place that the image (not the object) is able to be released into public domain or a CC 2.0 or 3.0 release. I took the approprate steps to insure the image feel under these rules. I will heed what you say. Just unfortunate. Thank you for your notice :) I would have had no way of knowing Calmer Waters 01:38, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it's very sad that he won't allow use of images of his artwork. I actually called him on the phone and explained the situation to him and asked him if he'd be willing to give permission, but he said no. :/ I'll keep working on him, but in the meantime, it would be best to remove all images of his artwork right away. To my knowledge, the only ones that can stay (at the moment) are of Kryptos and Cyrillic Projector. As for taking pictures of artwork in public locations, my understanding is that the permission is dependent on the laws of the country where the artwork is located. In some countries it's okay, but in the U.S., everything is protected. For more info, see commons:Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_States. BTW, I do think it's great that you're creating articles for his various artworks, and I love the idea of trying to get his article to FA. I'll definitely help in any way I can (especially by trying to get him to give image permission). BTW, Kryptos is going to be mentioned on a Discovery Channel special this Sunday, "Hunting the Lost Symbol", in case you'd like to watch! --Elonka 01:51, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. I'll definately comply. I'm sorry this had to happen. I tryed to be so careful about getting them right. If he doesn't want them posted, then thats his right. I wouldn't think of doing something that infringes on anothers rights. Thank you so very much. also, Critical assembly is released by him in the public domain. I checked Calmer Waters 01:57, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for understanding! That's also interesting about Critical Assembly. I see where it says that the artist released the image into public domain, but I'm not seeing anything on OTRS... Can you point me to where he said that? That'll help me during my next phone conversation with him.  :) --Elonka 02:03, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like HowardMorland stated that Jim Sanborn gave permission to use the scanned image of the work. Your right, I don't see a OTRS tag either. I AGF that it was valid. I'll go ahead and remove that one also. I placed speedy delete tags on the other images at Wikicommons I uploaded. Calmer Waters 02:17, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll followup with Sanborn on that one too, and let you know what I find out! --Elonka 02:32, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
O.K. Thank you again. and have a wonderful night :) Calmer Waters 02:44, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
and for the heads up for Sunday! Calmer Waters 02:47, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Properly licensed Kryptos image :)
Okay, as a followup, I had a chat with Sanborn today. He confirmed that he never authorized the Critical Assembly image to be put into public domain, and he was adamant that all images of his artwork be removed immediately from Wikipedia (sigh). I told him about how great the DYKs were, and how this was good promotion, etc., but he wasn't interested. I did, however, persuade him to authorize a new image of the Kryptos sculpture, to replace the other one, and he sent me an authorization email which I've already forwarded to OTRS. It's my hope that once he sees how eager we are to work with him on this (and how easy it is to authorize a free license) he may relent and authorize other images in the future. For your own purposes, which images would you most like to see, and that will help me to prioritize? --Elonka 21:16, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Its a beautiful picture:) I have been looking over various prior FAs to view the structure of the article layouts as well as how to properly build the content. I believe the most important issue of course will be his approval of all images used. The most important of these will be one of him. Looking at examples such as [Salvador Dalí]] only 2 or 3 images of his work would be needed. Kryptos arguably being the most important of which (Not an issue now thanks to you). I have ordered his book to research further. I also starting to expanding the article on Word, thru have not done anything to the article itself yet. I believe there should easily be enough valid research on him to make this a possiblity. He is quite a fasinating and intelligent man. I look forward to learning more about him in doing this. There is so much more to offer readers inquiring about him then the 1000+ prose currently. Ps. his hits have gone up from 24 in auguest to 1600+ in Sept to over 3000 so far this month - Kryptos 32000+ :) No doubt that Dan Brown's newest book and the media coverage will continue the rising interest it has already started. Calmer Waters 06:15, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can tell that it's going to be a real pleasure working with you.  :) And yes, I agree that his article needs a photo of him. I've been asking him about this for quite awhile, but he still hasn't picked an "official" one he'd like. In the meantime, we may be able to use an informal picture. For example, check my site at http://elonka.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2146 , where there are several photos I took last week. Let me know if you like one of them, and I'll see about getting it cropped and uploaded under a free license. :) Oh, and regarding Dan Brown's book... Did you know one of the characters is named after me? Intelligence Analyst "Nola Kaye", is an anagram for "Elonka". :) I don't think that there are any reliable sources we can use for this (yet), but I'm sure it'll be a fun addition to Elonka Dunin when sources to appear! Oh! And on that point, would you be willing to modify my bio? It has Jim's name misspelled as "James Sanborn" instead of "Jim Sanborn". I'd fix it myself, but it normally causes screaming if I make any edits to my bio at all, so it's always better if I ask someone else! Thanks, --Elonka 15:53, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is awesome! I didn't know that. I love anagrams and for you to be the subject of one in Dan Brown's book is incredible :) What it must be like to watch an on-screen character based in part on you in a few years when the film adaptation occurs. Also the part of the Kryptos article where you inform the gentleman from Langly that your medal's cypher was a typo (and on the spot even) was classic. I went ahead and updated his name to fit with the page move done earlier. The photos you have is kind of dark on his bio and looks dated from more recent pictures I have come across. Since this is a BLP it would be nice to use a photo showing how he looks now for the info box templete with the black and white picture in the history section. Calmer Waters 23:33, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think that Jim Sanborn would be willing to permission to use his recorded bio found here 7? It states that permission from Sanborn is needed to use. It haves his contact info posted; however, I was waiting, as they have not been transcribed yet. I believe this might help greatly in writing the major portions of the article (his bio, etc.) Calmer Waters 09:07, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think that we can use the recorded bio as a source, as long as we don't quote large sections of it. As for pictures, did you see anything that you liked in my gallery, from the photos I took of him last week? If not, I'll just pick one. :) Also, are you on Facebook? There are several other people uploading pictures of him there.  :) --Elonka 15:10, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Clinton[edit]

First off, the DYK thing wasn't my idea. Second off, you're right that it was spun off. Now that it is an established article, I'm probably going to start shortening the section in the main article. I doubt, however, that me deleting the text on the Bill Clinton page will help (I assume most of the spin-off reason is because Big Bill was already nommed on DYK) Purplebackpack89 (talk) 04:47, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Calmer Waters, thank you for your interest in helping users creating accounts. Your request has been approved. I advise you to read WP:ACCG before you use the system.

At this time, you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day. You won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user. However, if you have reached the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:RPE.

Again, thanks for your interest in the account creation system. Join us on IRC at wikipedia-en-accounts and subscribe to the mailing list by going here. Willking1979 (talk) 01:30, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Le Vélocipède Illustré[edit]

Hello C Water, thanks for your comments. I am out of my depth so can you please explain 2 things and/or give me a couple of tips.

 • I'm not sure which refs you mean as 'bare URLs
 • how do I get a cite web tab? What do i do with it? Does it have instructions?

Regards Chienlit (talk) 23:53, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. However, I may have incorrectly thought of it as bare URL because it is completely Blue linked like a URL that contains just the internet link:

4. The Guardian, 3 May 2008, On yer vélo. Claire Armitstead takes a tour round France

And I am accustomed to expanded URLs such as:

Armitstead, Claire (2008-05-03). "On yer vélo: Claire Armitstead takes a tour round France with the Ondaatje prizewinner". Guardian News and Media. Retrieved 2009-11-04.

So it appears your references are fine and not truly bare. You just use a differnt reflist:) About the cite tool....when you are in the editing screen, there is a gray tool bar that has a [cite] box at the end. If you click it, it will give a choice of a couple of different options like Web, book, etc. Click on that and it will open a wizard that allows you to fill in the boxes you need and the tool will set the cite up for you. I find it pretty useful. I took another look and will go ahead and approve the hook now. Thanks for doing that. And nice article :) Any questions feel free to ask. Cheers Calmer Waters 00:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CW, thanks for positive stroke and help so far, but .... I don't seem to have a 'gray tool bar that has a [cite] box'. As I type this my grey (I guess we are an ocean apart :-) ) tool-bars show font, world, link, image, signature, advanced, special chars, help. and I can only drill to standard <.r.e.f.> stuff. Do you use a special tool? Thanks in advance. Chienlit (talk) 12:26, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hmmm. should be standard on all en-wiki interfaces. yeah, the tool bar you just spoke of. Starts out bold, italics text,.....and then the last button on the right should state insert citation when you put your mouse over it. Do you have 23 buttons on that tool bar? How many? Calmer Waters 12:46, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, go to your preferences and click on the editing tab. then check mark the show edit toolbar box. Thant should give it to you (as long as you have javascript on your computer, which shouldn't be a problem with most computers having it as an add-on anyways). Let me know if that works Calmer Waters 12:52, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your review of my DYK candidate[edit]

Here. First of all, thank you for doing it. I'm wondering about your note regarding it not being a BLP, though; is that just standard procedure when dealing with negative-ish hooks about biographical subjects, or is there some policy change at DYK regarding BLPs? Steve Smith (talk) 23:08, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just noted that because if it was a BLP it was most doubtfully be declined do to the rule suggesting not posting hooks that have a negative aspect of an individual who is living. Your article is fine. Wr're a liuttle back logged on older nominations and was hoping the note would keep it from being tied up any longer, so we can move it to the prep area and then main page :) Kindly Calmer Waters 23:14, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know? Help[edit]

Calmer, I was curious as to how I can improve the article for Ice Mountain. I suggested it be added to "Did you know?", but wanted to ensure that it met all the standards. Could you please review the article and share your suggestions/comments? Thanks! --Caponer (talk) 19:59, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sculpture[edit]

Could you please explain your deletion rationale for the photos you removed from the Jack Anderson (sculptor) article? Are you planning to contest the images in the Sculpture article also? ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:22, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The rational is under commons:Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_States which covers all images of american artist's works of art as being copyrighted by the artist owner. In essance, even if the photgrapher gives permission under CC 3.0 one would still need permission from the artist for wikipedia. I myself am not going to contest it. The images themself have already been contested by someone else. Thank you. Calmer Waters 15:17, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why aren't you contesting the photographs of sculpture in the sculpture article? The idea that photographs of outdoor sculptures violate copyright is absolute nonsense of course. It is not the sculpture that is being recreated. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:00, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's an interesting point. Calmer Waters, can you explain the license on File:Huk,_Oslo_-_sculpture.jpg, the first image on that page?? I don't see anything there but the photographer's permission, and Henry Moore didn't die until 1986. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 19:23, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I left a link in my first reply, that better explains why I removed the images. It was an issue with not having permission from the artist. It states For artworks, even if permanently installed in public places, the U.S. copyright law has no similar exception, and any publication of an image of a copyrighted artwork thus is subject to the approval of the copyright holder of the artwork. However, public artwork installed before 1923 is considered to be public domain, and can be photographed freely. (Prior to 1978, when the definition changed, works of art such as statues or sculptures that were permanently installed in a public place were considered in general to be published,[4] so usual U.S. copyright law such as [PD-US] or [PD-1923] applies.) In these situations, document the date of installation and the creator (sculptor) of the pictured work as much as possible.
The U.S.does not have a Freedom of panorama clause in the copright laws of an american artist and his U.S. works as some countries, such as Germany does. It is the editors burden to proved permission from the artist (not the photographer), rather than that of the artist to show he does not want the image displayed in a publication. It may sound like nonsence, but I assure you its the U.S. copyright law. Please don't take this the wrong way. I enjoyed your article and even submitted it for inclusion in DYK to bring it to the attention of more readers. If you feel my action is in error, please feel free to bring it to my attention. Thank you in advance. Warmly Calmer Waters 19:51, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the link, thanks, but didn't see the difference between the one statue (by Anderson) and the other (by Moore)--the latter is in Norway, and you mentioned Germany. Is the situation in Norway comparable to Germany? thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:26, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The term Freedom of panorama comes from the German copyright law called W:Panoramafreiheit. Thats the only reason I used Germany :) I believe the photo of Moore's Huk, Oslo should be fine. At least that's my interpretation of them :) P.S. I only provided the text from the one link earlier to help clarify the rational for why I removed the image I did for ChildofMidnight, not to push an agenda. Calmer Waters 22:55, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wondering where Moore came up. Did I do anything to that article? Calmer Waters 23:01, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

<---So...Germany is like Norway, you are saying, right? Listen, I'm not accusing you of pushing any agenda (and having struggled with copyright issues in other venues, I understand they are complicated); the double question mark in my original question was accidental, but I thought CoM's question was valid: what about sculpture? And that's where I got the example of Henry Moore from. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 00:09, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Sculpture article does not appear to have any images of U.S. sculptures by american artists. I wouldn't be able to give an example of every piece of art that would or wouldn't fall under Freedom of panorama or similiar laws of different countries, but the attached link does help. Oh, I didn't think you were, just didn't want to sound like wikilawyering or anything:) I've just recently learned of this myself while working with articles of american sculptures. Disappointing how difficult it is to get valid images posted to the article, thru not impossible. This link will give some info and a link to the international copyright site. Calmer Waters 00:35, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks--I appreciate your advice, and I am sure ChildofMidnight does as well. Drmies (talk) 04:36, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it appears to me that Calmer Waters was acting consistently with policy and not arbitrarily, as it seemed to me at first. I still think it's a perversion of common sense and copyright law to believe that images of outdoor sculptures (or even indoor sculptures in galleries and exhibits) violate copyright law. My understanding is that those laws are meant to prevent reproductions of an artwork, not depictions showing them. Oh well. It certainly makes articles on sculpture and artists difficult to illustrate. Take care. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:50, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 • What about using the images under a fair use rationale so reproduction or commercial use would be disallowed? ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:04, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still trying to write up something for the village pump about possibly getting something in the policies or at least an essay to address this. More eyes may help us all:) I'm not a expert in copyright laws and was disappointed when this was first brought to me. WikiCommons haves one; yet, I can find anything on en-wiki. not in the copyright, images, or a couple other I've looked thru. Think its worthy to be addressed. I will be sure to give both you and Drmies a head up along with links at approprate article discussion pages such as images policies and copyrights when I get it wrote up. Just making sure I'm not missing something. Thanks again for your understanding Calmer Waters 02:26, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks Calmer. Sorry for being grumpy. I was excited when someone added those nice images so it was disappointing to see them deleted. And fair use for copyrighted materials while photos of art and sculpture is excluded doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Thanks again. Take care. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:19, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. No ill will taken. These things can sometimes be frustrating :) Calmer Waters 23:27, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK queues question[edit]

First off, thanks for the advice on my talk page. But now I have a question. When a prep area becomes full, do we normally move it into the next available queue, or do we wait until someone else double-checks everything before moving? MuZemike 00:06, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As an administor, you can place both queues filled by yourself and other editors. It should be noted that the admin loading the queues is responsible for the queue (no glaring errors, credit templates correct, hooks under 200 characters, etc...) It does help to gain an understanding of who has filled the prep, as some are easier to verify than others (as comes with time watching verifiers contributions) :). Sometimes hooks may need to be shuffled around to ensure similiar hooks are not next to one another and approx half are US based (difficult at times). There is currently a discussion on Wikipedia Talk:DYK#Next update: URGENT, that might help. Most admins involved with promoting queues are friendly about helping with the in and outs involved. Fucking, Austria[edit]

Hey there, I see that the Fucking, Austria article is in the prep area. What do you think of making this one a lead hook with the photo of the sign? It's probably a little bit more interesting than a photo of Michael Jackson, who we have all seen a million times before. What you think? --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 06:23, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I was suprised to see it placed as non-image hook. I believe the best course of action would be a discussion on the DYK discussion page for others views on this. Calmer Waters 06:32, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be able to start the discussion by any chance? I am still learning my way around non-suggestion DYK pages. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 06:33, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is pretty much the same as starting a comment or question on a persons talk page. My suggestion is to leave a quick message as a courtesy to the person who promoted the hook, Materialscientist, asking if they mind moving it to a lead position. Calmer Waters 06:49, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, cool, have left a message for Materialscientist at User_talk:Materialscientist#Fucking.2C_Austria. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 06:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, almost always better to go to the source. Usually there are valid reasons for why a queue is set up the way it is (balancing queues, older noms, and such) and MS is quite good about being fair. If anything else I can help with, drop a note. Kindly Calmer Waters 07:40, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome[edit]

Hi, and welcome to WikiProject Articles for creation! We are a group of editors who work together on the Articles for creation and Images for upload pages.

A few tips that you might find helpful:

 • Please take time to fully read the reviewers' instructions before reviewing submissions.
 • The project's discussion board is the best place to ask for help or advice. You might like to watchlist this page, and you are encouraged to take part in any discussion that comes up.

Once again, welcome to the project. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:12, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

thanks! Ill be sure to contiune helping out! I cant belive that I got it right on the first try!--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 01:01, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Templete set up correctly and the hook you choose was inline cited. No issues with the article itself (date, length, tags, etc..) Job well done :) Calmer Waters 01:08, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I do have one question. I just made another nomination sbout the National Weather Service Central Illinois and its about them useing kites. Is this unique? Didnt most weather stations in the 1800's use kites?--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:41, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I cant not say I'm aware of how weather stations tested for weather way back them :) However; sometimes something that was common place along time ago, and is unusual now, or rarely known by a large number of readers can still be quite interesting. Just as sometimes something that is unique to one individual or item may still be deemed kind of dull in cases. I hope that helps some. KindlyCalmer Waters 02:50, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK then, ill leave the nomination up there, ill see how things go. And as for the thing about old weather stations and how they measured stuff. Maybe I should ask User:AtheWeatherman.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 02:59, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have one more question. What do I do next? I have a suggestion that has passed but what else do I have to do to get it to teh main page?--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 11:16, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You already got thru the hard part :) Now its just pretty much a waiting game. We attempt to pull nomination from the older nomination that have been approved first (now the 8th) and work up while attempting to keep the queues balanced. This allows a normal progression of hooks promoted to the main page without having older hook fail because nobody chooses them. I have made an essay on my user page that highlights pretty much how a hook goes from nom to main page. It might help if you decide you would like to also assist is the verifing and possible pomotions of hooks:) I hope that helps alittle . Kindly Calmer Waters 11:32, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well I guess it is a waiting game. So how long does it take for a nomination to get it's way to the main page. 10 days or so?--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 11:37, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

<random indent> 32 hooks are promoted a day if we continue on a 6 hour 8 hook update. so about 6 - 7 days from nom to main page with an average of 2 to 3 days for verification of the hook. However; I've seen some promoted quite quickly if older noms are not verified because of an issue and the promoter needs to pull from the newer nominations for an urgent update. Calmer Waters 11:43, 18 November 2009 (UTC) So what exactly do I have to do now? Just wait (like litteraly watch time go by and 2-7 days it show up on the main page) I will help out with other DYK's and their nominations once I can see my nomination go thhrough the whole process so that way I know exactly what happens for each stage.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 11:58, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, saw that as I was going thru the history to message the creator. DYK preps[edit]

I've moved down some European hooks from Queue5 to prep2. This is not to say I' filling up prep2. Please consider that and move the hooks between preps as you like. The French hook is slightly better for the next update (than British one), regarding the time zone. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 23:55, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good deal. It is getting inceasingly difficult to prepare a balanced queue. very shallow pre-approved pool to choose from :) Calmer Waters 00:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh .. Yeah. I spend too little time at T:TDYK lately. I'll review some now, thus if you got time, you can wait a bit. Next empty queue update is 6 hrs ahead. Materialscientist (talk) 00:03, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Too little time? I suppose if you dont count the last 6 or more prepared queues and promotions you have done in just the last few days alone ;-) If our usual editors did just 3-4 verifications each we could be back to 50 in as little as an hour. Maybe the DYK burnout I've heard about. I'll leave the rest of the prep for someone else and help with some verifing also Calmer Waters 00:13, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am too responsible and can't leave the queues empty. This diverted me from reviewing. It is also not good that one person does all DYK steps (from writing to putting on the main page) - more eyes should have a look at every stage. Number of referees dropped recently. We are still managing, thanks to you also, but I fear the quality of the reviews might get worse - nobody is perfect and we can't cover all fields with a a handfull of current regulars. Materialscientist (talk) 00:20, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well said. thought about maybe sending out some messages to the regular contributors or maybe even a message on the discussion page, but refrained due to not wanting to "spam" across the user pages. Calmer Waters 00:30, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I feared many referees lose interest in DYK and didn't want to push. Many prefer writing than assessing (more credits and "use"). Contribution rate is +- same. My dream was to have so many referees that we could do professional reviews, improve the articles while at DYK, and fight for quality. Currently, any dull article will pass if technical requirements are met. PS Just approved a couple of Indian hooks which are Ok for the next timezones. Materialscientist (talk) 00:37, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting this over the hump -- I nominated it because I thought it would be a nice reward for a good job by a first time editor, Ttrumble (talkcontribs). It was good to have a pro shepherding it through the final steps, as I was getting a little frustrated with the repeated, "add this", "add that", etc. I think I have a better understanding of the rules now and will probably stay away from potential DYKs where I didn't write the article and really don't know much about the subject. . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 13:36, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your welcome. I do hope this wasn't a bad experience and hope you find your way back to DYK again in the future It is true that it is a little more difficult finding a cited hook in an article you may be unfamiliar with, but you did find something quite interesting. I'm sure many people were not aware that this was where the pledge had orginated from. You did a great job helping this new editor. You are the one that deserves the credit :) Kindly Calmer Waters 17:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Preps[edit]

I'm back on-line. The next queue is not European time, and there is a long weekend to go. Thus I was thinking about holding British and other EU hooks for 1-2 queues later ? Materialscientist (talk) 23:14, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds good. There wasnt alot of pre approved hooks and we were running empty so I used a couple. Would you like me to place them back into the template talk or just set Prep 1 for Q4 or Q5 and we can work on getting prep 2 ready for the next Queue (Q3). I'll start helping verify the older noms and leave the rest of the preps to either you or another editor. Kindly Calmer Waters 23:23, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked at the available hooks at T:DYK yet (I know there are too few approved, but IMO, time zone is more important than age of the nom - i.e. I pick articles from top in emergency), another thing, the balance of 50/50 US hooks doesn't hold these days anyway. Quick first note is to reshuffle preps to have one set suitable for next time zone (either with US or "universal zone" hooks). My wish is you do what you feel like (review, reshuffle, whatever). Just leave a word, and I'll complete the sets if and when necessary. Materialscientist (talk) 23:33, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I moved the british hooks to Prep 2 so they wont be showing at 1am in the morning. I will focus on balancing queue dependent on time zones also in the future. Both queues contain 5 a piece and I will leave the queues to another editor or yourself and will instead focus on verifing. there will need to be 3 additional added to each. Fine. Cheers. The current timing of the hooks is such that one queue goes into the dead time for Europe/Russia/India/Ukraine, etc, from where we get at least 50% of noms. I feel there is no problem to have >70% of US hooks for such queues. Materialscientist (talk) 00:03, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Could you elaborate on this dead zone. Its currently 1712 where I am at and my clock on the Wiki says 0012. What hours should one look to reduce european hooks. I show the update times for London are 0100, 0700, 1300, and 1900. Would the dead time be the 1900 and 0100 updates. Just so I know :) Calmer Waters 00:22, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was talking about 1am London time - that is 2am Europe, 4am Russia and 7am Delhi - quite dead. The next zone is fine for India/Russia and partly Europe - 7am is also quite early for London (as I recall when living there, they are not early risers :), but tolerable; 8am is Ok for most of Europe. My personal opinion though. Materialscientist (talk) 00:37, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. As I work alternating evening/morning 12-16hr rotations it is not unusual for me to forget what normal functioning hours are :) Thanks for bringing that to me. Will take that into consideration from now on. Have to log off for a rotation, so I wish you a good one. Kindly Calmer Waters 00:52, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Last time I worked like that was 10 yrs ago .. Now I'm regular, my dead time is roughly 13-22 UTC. Materialscientist (talk) 02:09, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
