Umm, I didn't word that very well. Apologies. As I said I created the page, and included his date of birth. From what I'm reading here, the DOB would be unverifiable before my bio is published. You seem pretty heavy handed regarding your own edits and additions. There's quite a bit I'd do differently regarding the Kor page, but hey, you're the boss. Are you a climber? Are you a climbing researcher? Cameron Burns (talk) 05:04, 20 May 2017 (UTC)Cam Burns[reply]

References[edit]

I moved this from the Layton Kor talk page. I hope you don't mind.--OMCV (talk) 02:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Umm...not sure whom to address this sorta complaint to at WP, but I'm working on Layton's biography and wrote the original entry on him. But others added "references" not based on what I wrote. Here's the deal: my info was based on first-hand interviews with Layton. From his birth date to whatever. The later "references" added were the names of books that mentioned Layton. They were just books where he's mentioned. I think they were inappropriate references. For example, I added Layton's date of birth. That's not in the book that was later added as a reference on WP. It was added, first-hand, by me. I think it's kinda bullshit (the way you're running this shop) if you ask me. --Cameron Burns(talk)

Don't get stressed, let me help clear some WP policy up for you. I can't claim to be an expert but I can offer what I know, especially since you are working in the information field on biographies and guides. The added citation appears to be addressing the statement the "(Kor's) first ascents and drive for climbing are well known in the climbing world." This is not information you got from talking with Kor. In addition "if" you got this information from Kor or more likely you own first hand knowledge (which I'm sure far exceeds mine on the subject) it would be mostly inadmissible according to WP:verify policy which considers self publication to be "original research" that isn't verified by a valid third-party. By WP standards a birth certificate, your book (once published or one of your already published guides that substantiates this), or some similar documentation that can be "verified references" would work. The irony is once you publish you book based on your interview with Kor it will then be a great reference. If I have a chance I'll buy it and flesh out this bio some more. Right now, by the strictest standards the information you added should be removed, but most editors let facts like this slide until they are disputed. The likely reason the reference was added was added was as a favor to your efforts, the references is a reliable source that supports Kor's significance. The most common way for bios to get removed from Wikipedia is for them not to meet the bio standards (Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons) by not actually being significant enough (even for a digital encyclopedia) or poorly referenced (Wikipedia:Reliable sources). By the way I loved Selected Climbs in the Desert Southwest: Colorado and Utah. I hope this didn't put you off Wikipedia, it can use all the knowledgeable people it can get.--OMCV (talk) 02:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
