Illuminatus Trilogy revert

You might not be aware that the anonymous editor you reverted at The Illuminatus! Trilogy has asked for an explanation of the revert on the talk page. Although the plot information seems sound from what I remember of the book, the anon shot himself in the foot by adding "A lot more stuff happens etc etc" which is my guess why you reverted it and I agree. Anyway, I thought I'd invite you to add your own 2 cents. 23skidoo 17:11, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. What's strange is the anon gives a pretty good argument in support of his/her edits, but then you see him/her making a smart-aleck remark in the article. Oh well. I last read the books about 5 years ago and I remember a few of the points in the summary, such as "The Mgt" and the like, but as I said on the talk page, the anon did call the accuracy of the information into question with that last line. Amazing what a few words can do. 23skidoo 17:34, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! :)

I couldn't think of any other arguments to really make - you and the nominator made them pretty clear - so I decided I'd pitch in to clarify. :) Have a great day! Srose (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually there were outside sources but they were removed by the guy that nominated the article for deletion. You and Omicronpersei8 seemed to have been slightly confused in wether or not to revert 203.10.59.63 on Universe. I can almost assuredly tell you that it is spam. See Category:Wikipedia:Sock_puppets_of_Universe_Daily for many of the spam URLs that User:Universe Daily's socks and proxies like to use. Visit a few. You'll find they're an almost identical forum that has been repeatedly spammed. I doubt the list is definitive anymore, but keep an eye out for it. Kevin_b_er 03:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortnately your edit to the article was the word "LIES." added in big letters. If something in the article is wrong feel free to correct it, or discuss what is wrong with it on the talk page. Please don't leave large capital letters in the middle of the article, as that causes many of us to believe you are vandalising it. Thanks. VANDALISM

Paul Cyr has reverted a change I made to the Windows Vista stating simply the truth a bout it's current security issues. The page in question only hails Vista and refuse to alert anyone to any of the fatal flaws of Vista. It is true that these may well get worked out soon, but they haven't been yet. I think my post should be reinstated.

"Whenever you try to do ANYTHING, a "Are you sure?" message box pops up. In testing, this has trained all users to begin automatically clicking OK on message boxes without paying them any notice. This flaw allows numerous viruses and exploits to be easily implemented. Also, at a recent black-hat conference, Vista's security was breached within 10 minutes."

I have been highly displeased with how biased Wikipedia has been, because high ranked users write articles about things they like or are biased towards. And if anyone presents any information that doesn't fit into the view the have imagined of the topic, the report it as vandalism.

I think there NEEDS to be information on the Windows Vista page that talks about current security issues. All I've been able to find is articles praising Vista's security.

Your edits to Microsoft Windows that were reverted by me[1] contained the phrases. " Which is sad, because windows sucks" and "because Windows is stupid" which are Non-Encyclopedic and do not hold a Neutral Point of View which must be kept at all times at Wikipedia. If you have any verifiable facts that you wish to contribute, please add your views to the articles talk page where other editors will be able to help you include them in a neutral and verifiable manner. Cheers Canadian-Bacon (contribs) 02:25, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

True, my "contributions" to the windows page were not neutral. But I made valid edits to the windows vista page that were reverted by someone else, and the link said to contact you. I'm not concerned with the windows page revert, I was just seeing how it would take to get reverted.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.160.63.126 (talkcontribs)

Ah ok, well you'll need to take up those edits with the editor who reverted them in that case. If you look through the articles history it'll have your IP and the user name or IP of the reverting editor. Hope that helps. Cheers. Canadian-Bacon (contribs) 04:47, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the revert, more help needed

The IP that blanked my talk page [2] was another user logged out as proven by the history of this user page [3]. There was previously a non-notable bio (likely hoax) created under this name at Steve Sharpe (I believe, capitalization could be off). Obvious retaliation for my putting a speedy tag on that. The user account should be spoken to as well in this case I feel to spell out this type of behaviour isn't acceptable.--Crossmr 04:20, 23 August 2006 (UTC) .[reply]

Reverting My Edits

"This individual still maintains a shred of dignity in this insane world by adhering to correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalisation?" Really? Then why the hell do you not have the proper Canadian spelling of capitliZation? Are you ashamed of your motherland? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.185.184 (talkcontribs)

It is a standard userbox, whoever made it was most likely American and set that spelling as standard for it. Also please stop the vandalism it's annoying. Canadian-Bacon (contribs) 18:50, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can change what is said in the userboxes. You chose not to. Why? Probably because you hate your country, the friendly neighbour of the north. Another probably: you are fat and very rarely get with girls.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.185.184 (talkcontribs)
I'd argue that I have both a Canadian Flag and an RCAF flag on my wall. I'd also argue that I weigh in at a modest 155. If I was expectionally bored I could argue that my girlfriend would disagree with your analysis. But unfortunately I have neither the time, nor drive to do so. Explanation Needed

What's this? There wasn't a 68.214.87.239 editing that page. You made the page into an article about C++, even though there's a page called "C programming language." I don't see how this could be an honest mistake.--JNermn 05:01, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's really strange, I don't know how that happened... Looking at the Ips historys he did make an edit here [4]to C++ Which I tried to revert. I guess somehow Vandalproof somehow took the + signs out of the title of the article and moved the attempted revert to C. It wasnt my intent to move the article to the wrong place. Reversion of Incest

Hello. Why do you think incest is good?

Regards,

James Allison Research Fellow (Psychology) University Of Oxford —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.64.168.185 (talkcontribs)

It's not a question of whether I believe incest is good or not. Personally I find it disgusting, but while on Wikipedia I strive to maintain a Neutral Point of View, which is one of the cornerstones of the Wikipedia Project. I encourage you to continue to contribute but to avoid adding personal opinions to articles. Canadian-Bacon (contribs) 18:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Incest

I am pleased to hear you also dislike incest. This is not a personal opinion however. In the course of my research at Oxford University I can see clearly how sickening and harmful it is. This is no more a personal opinion "the earth is flat". Does the fact that some people do believe the earth is flat make it a matter of opinion? Of course not. The harmful effects of incest are directly observable in exactly the same way. I think we need a third party opinion on this.

James Allison —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.64.168.185 (talkcontribs)

I see you left a message on the article's talk page, which is the correct thing to do if you feel something in the article is wrong. An editor much more farmiliar with the subject than me should comment on it shortly. ThanksCanadian-Bacon (contribs) 19:10, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy to provide a third party opinion. I haven't edited the Incest article, nor read it until now. I'm afraid James, that you edit was correctly removed by Canadian-Bacon. At the very least you would need to cite a reliable source for the assertion; for example the research you mention above. Presumably that's been written up in a peer reviewed scientific journal. If you can provide a link to that journal or conference article that confirms that "Incest is sick and wrong. This is a fact." then you could include it. Otherwise its just your point of view and thus inappropriate for an encyclopedia article. I highly doubt the Encyclopedic Britannica entry on Incest says anything like your edit. Sorry, Gwernol 19:11, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Canadian-Bacon, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

A better way to do so would have been to add a disambiguation link to the article, as I have done now, as opposed to adding large bold text at the top of the page which can be confused as vandalism. Cheers. Canadian-Bacon t c e 19:22, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Silly question

But thought I'd ask you as you appear to have knowledge of Barrhaven. What's the nearest hospital? Queensway-Carleton or the Civic. (I'm working on a business plan for a medical centre in Ottawa). Is there an urgent care centre or some other hospital-equivalent around? It's been almost 10 years since I've lived in Ottawa and I've forgotten somewhat. Many thanks -- Samir धर्म 01:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and as such it is written in an encyclopedic tone. Also Wikipedia must conform to a Neutral Point of View, therefore you can't add in your own interpretation of what dance music sounds like, or else everyone else would do the same thing and we would get nothing accomplished. mistaken blocks and warnings

hi Canadian-Bacon. my name is Gustavo and i don't come onto Wikipedia that much but it surprises me to find all these messages about warnings and blocks. i'm not too sure about how someone can have my IP address and just wreck havoc on Wikipedia. i'm not the type of person to edit, i just come on here to check stuff out, that's all. i hope that all those warnings and blocks doesn't prohibit me from using the website in the future. thank you for your time and if u have any advice/comments, please feel free to reply. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.12.116.135 (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately you use America Online as your internet service provider. AOL uses proxies to hide their users real IP addresses so user's IPs can change with almost every page they load. This means that you can end up with warnings, blocks and other items as a result of another users actions while they had the IP address that you now have. The best way to avoid these false warnings in the future is to create an account with Wikipedia. Cheers Canadian-Bacon t c e 04:01, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Why is there an Edit option at the top of the page if I cant actually EDIT the page????

s.neil@telus.net —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.179.234.101 (talkcontribs)

Any user, anonymous or logged in is able to edit Wikipedia, this is one of the backbones of the project. That being said we also have guidelines that we must follow. In your case you edited Vermilion, Alberta, and edited out three notable people(An Olypmic cross country skier, an NHL hockey player and an Order of Canada winning chef) and replaced them with with three other people. These people you added do not fall under the guideline of Wikipedia:Notability (people) which helps us decide which people to include on Wikipedia, since it would be unrealistic for us to include every single person in the world. Hope that clears it up. Canadian-Bacon t c e 01:30, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you live in Vermilion Alberta? One of the links for Lakeland College goes to the wrong Lakeland College. It links to a wikipedia page about some other college in the states. The link to lakelandc.ab.ca is corrent. There should be a page added for Vermilion/Lloydminster/Strathcona Lakeland College. I've tried fixing this mistake in the past but it failed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.179.234.101 (talkcontribs)

Vandalism?

I use Wikipedia every day and have referred 100's of people to the site.

One time, "ONE TIME", I read the dates wrong for the presidency of GW Bush and I made A COMMENT in the "Discussion" area and corrected (my comment) less than an hour later by retracting my comment and that make me quilty of vandalism?!!

I did not edit a thing in your precious database, to the best of my knowledge, since I do not know how to do so. I merely left a comment which I corrected and apologized for. Does that qualify as vandalism????!!!!

As far as all the other accusations I received in my message box, (I didn't even know I had a "MESSAGE BOX" until today) they are entirely unfounded, scandalous and probably libelous. I did nothing of the kind accused. You are obviously confusing me with other AOL users?

BTW: As near as I can tell, wikipedia and it's contributors are guilty of plagarism, copyright and trademark infringement, not to mention, fear mongering, pig headedness, egomania and sometimes outright bullshit.

Get the F over your self dude.

I still plan to visit the site often.

Ok, angry AOL user, it appears you've learned the harsh reality of AOL on Wikipedia. AOL uses proxy servers to hide your real IP address meaning that your IP changes, sometimes with every new page that you load. In your case your IP probably changed to one which had recently commited an act of vandalism and you recieved a warning belonging to someone else. If you don't want to recieve messages not pertaining to you, please Create an Account.
On a side note, the personal and legal threats are completely uncalled for. Please try to keep a cool head in the future and don't try to inflame other editors, as it is not tollerated and you will be blocked from editing if it continues.
On a last note, all of Wikipedia's documents and images are licensed through Fair Use, GNU, Public Domain and a variety of other licenses. Copywrite infringement, plagarism and trade mark infringement are not tollerated, and any examples of these are deleted as soon as they are discovered. Hi

Hi,

I was just wondering why my recent addition to Past Pupils of RGS Worcester has been deleted. Emaad Latif is a past pupil of the school and deserves to be recognised.

As a pupil of the school I feel it should be within my rights to decide who is a notable past pupil.

Would love to talk,

Many thanks,

Dave —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.154.19.241 (talkcontribs)

Hi, One of our priorities on Wikipedia is the ability for anyone to edit an article. These edits however must fall under several criteria to be kept, most importantly they must be notable and verifiable. This means that information must be verifiable by an outside source(Newspaper, Radio, TV, etc) and be particularely notable(Not just an average person, but more of a celebrity). If you can establish these two criteria in the names you are adding they will be kept. Thanks Canadian-Bacon t c e 19:31, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the chat.

Hi Dave,

How are you? Great to talk to you again. I would just like to chat regarding Emaad Latif if that is ok?

I would certainly not class Mr. Latif as "an average person". His celebrity status can be confirmed by the front page headline in Worcester's "Evening News" which stated: LOCAL SCHOOL BOY EXPELLED FOR DEALING CANNABIS TO CHILDREN.

I am of the opinion that his celebrity status deserves to be recognised.

I await your response with intrepidation.

Many thanks,

Dave

Ps. My addition to the "legend" page was removed. Please inform me why. Legend is now a recognised slang word (mainly used by British Adolescents) for someone who shows certain characteristics which may include but are not limited to: signs of mental abnormalities, a willingness to perform any prank or situation involving pain being inflicted on themselves.

OMG DIngs

OMG are the "dings" in your edit summaries from a certai play involving a guy and a girl in a restaurant who keep resetting things when they screw up by ringing a bell (saying "ding!")?

If so, thatd be awesome.

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

It appears that you are an America Online user. America online used proxy servers to hide it's clients true IP addresses. As far as this concerns Wikipedia, it means that we see your IP address as the IP address of the server that is covering you. This means that you may receive warnings and blocks that are meant towards other AOL users if your IP address switches to one that has recently vandalized. If you want to avoid this, you can Create an Account, where you will no longer receive irrelevant warnings and blocks. Thanks. Canadian-Bacon t c e 15:52, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
