I'll first give it a good copyedit later today. Right now I think it's got a wealth of info, but a number of issues (typos, grammar, wording, jargon...) that would prevent it even becoming a GA. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Circeus (talkcontribs) 14:31, 22 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

As a quick update, I've been intrigued by the appearance of "Secr." in the author citation when Louis Secretan was not mentionned anywhere else in the article. Researching showed up a reference to Amanita phalloides Secr. Then it dawned to me that possibly this name was so rarely employed because it was invalid. A search in Taxon showed up that his Mycologie Suisse, although predating Link, is now rejected as invalid for nomenclatural purposes, so Secr. has no reason to be in the author citation. I will correct this when copyediting the article. Circeus 16:04, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not logged, sorry about that. Re: Secretan, I think only the Synonyms in the taxobox really ought to mention it (They need to be added), although a quick sentence in the article wouldn't hurt. Secretan would probably need a page of his own too... About the link you give, the Vaillant page is not in French. It's in Latin... If you want, I can make a quick translation for French if you want me too, since I'm billingyual and translation is a hobby of mines. Bt for that I need a link to the exact stuff you want translated... 132.203.184.123 14:52, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roughly, it goes:

The root [!] of this mushroom is a sort of supple [?] bulb, round and nut[!]-sized, it sometimes measures 2 inches[1] wide, ending in a spintop below, and open like the crown[2] of a medlar[3] at the top, where it is sometimes like divided in 3 or 4 quarters [!]. From this opening raises a stipe between 3 and 5 inches tall, approximatively six lignes thick, holing up a cap first cut like an hemisphere and that later spread into a parasol open of sometimes 2 or 3 inches, sometimes over 4, white above and sometimes olive-ish, sometimes smooth, sometimes covered without order with bits of brown skin [!], cut in various shapes, making them[4] appear covered in brown warts. The flesh is very white, as are the gills,[5] who are very close to each others, and whose intervals contain small potion of gills[?]; at their thickest they have about 3 to 5 lignes. The flesh has as much of it around the stipe[??].[6] This stipe is the same color as the cap and has a strawberry[!][7] where the cap used to surround it. This mushroom has no bad taste. It is found at the end of August and the beginning of September, in the small park of Versailles [!] under the chestnut trees. The figure of Fungus dipsacoides Cob Would illustrate it well if it didn't have a conical cap.

Circeus 20:34, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  1. ^ French Imperial inches are 27 mm long
  2. ^ litteral, no idea what's the proper term
  3. ^ "nèfle" means both the plant and the fruit
  4. ^ Whether this refers to the bits of skin or the mushroom isno clearer in the original
  5. ^ "Feuillets"
  6. ^ Maybe referring to the gills?
  7. ^ "fraise," probably the older word for "ring"

Finally! Talk:Amanita phalloides/Comments. Circeus 03:47, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't worry about the dashes. over half the ISBNs on Wiki have none ;-) I'll add my refs (which refers to the whole of Secretan's work.) soon, and respond at the comment page for the rest. Circeus 14:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found this, which might of interest. Also a literature review about all the toxins. According to the Cornell site, Antamanide could be sort of a counterpoison, which probably ought to be investigated. and this: Weiland, T., and Faulstich, H. 1983. Peptide Toxins from Amanita. Pp. 585-635. In: Handbook of Natural Toxins, Volume I: Plant and Fungal Toxins. R.F. Keeler and A.T. Tu, Ed. Marcel Dekker, Inc. New York, NY. (ISBN 0824718933, it seems to be sorted as a serial in a few places). Maybe the added material in Volume VI: Toxicology of plant and fungal compounds (ISBN 0824783751) will have some more stuff. Circeus 15:13, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it's gonna have to wait because the friggin' off-campus access to JSTOR just won't work, so I can't look up Taxon. Circeus 00:21, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for peer review[edit]

Hi, I put an article up for peer review, Date cultivation in Dar al-Manasir, and found your name in the horticulture wikiproject list of people. If you have some time, I think it would make a great FA and wanted to get some expert advice. cc: user:SB Johnny, quercus robur, user:NoahElhardt, Cas Liber, User:Doc Tropics, Lynnathon, Benjamin, HelloMojo, Strobilus. Thanks, Rhetth 01:39, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So it's not a dud?[edit]

Glad to see that it's good information. I did not write it, I just found it. But I'm not an expert at what it's talking about, so thanks for any work. Any yes, the inline referencing (and some other minor formatting like removing the
codes) needs to be fixed. Rhetth 00:56, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with cut and paste job in an article[edit]

Hi there Casliber. I recently put up a "Unreferenced" tag on the Three Kings Islands page. The sole reference was under an "external links" heading and the link was messed up anyway. Its recently been corrected but the tag has been removed and its still under an "external links" heading ( if its a reference its in the wrong place here, no?). Anyway, it turns out that much of the article is a cut and paste job from this website- I'm thinking this stuff needs to be deleted but I don't really know what to do - the guy who removed the "Unreferenced" tag seems to be taking my efforts to sort out referencing for this page the wrong way (see the bottom of my talk page) and if I take any further action ( not really sure how to deal with this sort of plagiarism situation anyway) its probably going to provoke an edit war. Could you please help to sort out the plagiarism/referencing problems with this page? Cheers, Kotare 12:01, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK yeah I hear you, the citation needed tags certainly are more specific- for the record though, I meant well and wasn't trying to be a pedantic prick for the sake of it. Cheers, Kotare 10:28, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks[edit]

What brought it on, though? I've been busy in RW this week a lot, and have been lax about poking bird towards peer review. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:16, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ISBNs[edit]

Cas - noted your edit summary query at Common Raven. ISBNs started around 1969-70, though for a few years before that (from mid to late '60s?) there were SBNs (slightly shorter). Later reprints and new editions of older works should have ISBNs. Maias 06:02, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Silly me - just realised you can read all about it at ISBN. Cheers. Maias 06:05, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LoL Thank You[edit]

He he, thanks for the User talk:Alastair Haines#Civility barnstar. For me, this was an exercise in learning the system and taming others' assumptions about motivations. Pretty hairy, but good on Hanse for actually doing the obvious thing and doing the editing himself, rather than trying to insist I write his text for him. Good on Heimstern for not blocking me despite the request. Things could have been done better by all, but I'm happy it was a learning process.

I've found a nice, big, non-contentious area that needs work ... ancient New Testament manuscripts. There are already others wanting to expand this area too. Perfect! Created my first infobox, which is great fun! ;) Alastair Haines 00:08, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dist map[edit]

Hey Cas, I got a pd earth map and was about to crerate your dist map but the information is vague, I could replicate a similar version of whats in the PDF but if there is more accurate info available I'd prefer to work with that. Gnangarra 11:04, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FAC[edit]

Don't worry. I've been far more nitpicky than that before. After all, there's no point in supporting a FAC if we don,t feel it represent the best work of Wikipedia. Circeus 01:29, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the section headings are not quite right, but I'm not quite sure what I would do to fix it. Your alternative isn't all that compelling to me. I think it would be very difficult to structure this article well, considering the many contexts. But in my experience an elegant structure can always be found with enough effort. So I would have been inclined to agree with you in weakly opposing. Hesperian 02:24, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lambeosaurus[edit]

Hi, Cas;

I noticed what's gone on with Lambeosaurus, and although I appreciate it, I don't think we should get into the habit of doing it (especially when Species of Psittacosaurus has been there longer). Have a good day! J. Spencer 22:49, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think Species of Psittacosaurus should have an outside reviewer, unless it sits up there for weeks. I'm actually a little interested in what an outside reviewer would say about it, since it's not a straight genus article like the vast majority have been. J. Spencer 03:17, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many Thanks:[edit]

Wow! What can I say? I was pretty surprised someone actually started a petition about me. Thank you so much Cas, I was really gone for good. That last argument really set me off & I figured no one liked me & that I had better ways to use my time. However, your petition really changed my mind. Sure it wasn't WP:100 or anything, but 15 people saying to come back was all I neededto feel that this place wasn't a dung hole after all. I'm probably not going to be talking to people much after this message, as Wikipedia hasn't been nice to me in the past & not talking is the best way not to get into arguments. In any case, thank you for the support & for actually giving a damn. See you around. If you wanna check on what I'm doing, you might see me editing NZ articles for a while. Thanks again. :) Spawn Man 00:08, 16 May 2007 (UTC) P.S. I'm asuming the "hahahaha" was about my "The doctor is in" note. Glad you thought it was funny. :)[reply]

Simple: Delete the damn thing! It adds nothing to the article apart from giving a complicated way of saying "The kea eats fruits, seeds, roots etc..." Honestly, delete it. FAC voters don't like needless tables anyway. Just compile the table into a quick sentence or something & that should solve your problem. :) Spawn Man 02:08, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GAC backlog elimination drive[edit]

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all members, and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :{{GAReview}} underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 01:00, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
