Adding pictures[edit]

Working with images is a bit tricky. It partly depends on where the picture is.

This is a quick and dirty cheatsheet. If you want to read all about it, start here: Help:Contents/Images and media .

So, running through the options, for these articles in particular:

The picture may likely be in Commons, our media repository. Look for a copy before uploading something new. Start at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. You can search for your image by artist or title, or you can look in a category. Category:18th-century_fashion is good - there are subcategories by decade and by style.
If the picture you want isn't there, you may add it, assuming it is freely licensed. Photographic reproductions of paintings or prints from the 18th century are in the public domain, so you may add them. Photos of actual clothing that you took yourself may be added. Photos from museum websites and so on are generally copyright, and we can't just grab them.
Click "Upload file" in the left navigation or go to Commons:Upload] and let the wizard walk you through the process. That will do a basic upload.
Once the picture is in Commons, you copy the file name (File:Somefilename).
To add an image to a Gallery, there are two steps:
- Between the <gallery> </gallery> tags, on a new line enter File:Somefilemame | # - Year. Put them in chronological order, and update the numbers.
- In the next section, on a new line in the right place, enter

# [[:File:Somefile name|First part of caption]] remainder of caption''

That makes a text link back to the file, with the first part of the caption as the link. The # makes a numbered list.

To add an image somewhere other than a Gallery, type this on its own line:

[[File:Somefile name|right|thumb|Enter a caption here.]]
