DYK nomination for 1848 Marlborough earthquake

Hi Ceranth,

Thanks for nominating this. Can I suggest an alternative hook that matches the sources better?

... that the 1848 Marlborough earthquake was the first earthquake over magnitude 7 in New Zealand for which written records exist.
  • I'm keen not to offend anyone, as there are plenty of earthquakes in New Zealand recorded in Maori oral history.
  • Not exactly sure why you included the other two earthquakes in the hook... Mikenorton (talk) 16:30, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Ceranthor, appreciated. Mikenorton (talk) 20:43, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Well I found out that it wasn't the first mag 7+ in NZ for which written records exist, which means I had to come up with an alternative hook and also that gives me another article to write (the 1843 Wanganui earthquake), for which I know the DYK hook before I start! Anyway it's going to be in the next update. Mikenorton (talk) 13:15, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Anopheles

Thanks for the deletion. It was a typo on may part and I hadnt figured out how to delete the article. The proper article is under 'Anopheles: Taxonomy' now. BTW some one has put a notability notice on this. The taxonomy of Anopheles is a HUGE problem. Only a limited number of species are involved in disease transmission. Some species use rock pools; others use tree holes; still others use discarded tires and similar objects. If you want to deal with malaria and other nasties it is essential to know which species is causing the problem in your area. Which is why there has been such an effort in this direction. In my opinion your RFA was not very bad, as the opposes were not particularly strong. I think your second RFA will pass (in 3-4 months), but you need to learn some things from policy before reapplying. Among them are:
  1. The difference between block and ban;
  2. The significance of {{hangon}} tag;
  3. Admins are expected to follow consensus, except in cases when this will violate a policy;
I advise you to think about other questions as well. The answers could be better, in my opinion. However, do not get much upset about this RFA, as I said above, the opposition was not strong. Regards, Ruslik (talk) 10:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Hayward Fault Zone

Greetings:

I restored text from your extensive deletions of Potentially impacted structures and features, which I assume were in good faith. It may take me some time to locate and add the appropriate references as I am quite involved with other work right now. If you consider the text itself unworthy of inclusion then that is a matter appropriate for further discussion.

Thank you, and best wishes, Leonard G. (talk) 16:17, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's fine. It was an attempt to remove the information that was not in any other sources I found. If you have them, that would be great if you could source them. Ceranllama chat post 16:21, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I do not have references at this time, other than a personal e-mail from a manager at BART, in response to my request to a BART director concerning the the Oakland Hills Tunnel. The writings are however based upon knowledge obtained through reading newspaper and magazine articles and material from radio and television shows and so references can be found but may take some time. I will assume that you do not consider the material doubtful at this point.
Note that the tag {{unreferenced}} is to be treated differently than the tags {{fact}}, which implies dubiousness, suggesting that if not subsquently referenced that the material should be removed.
If an article has no references, and you are unable to find them yourself, you can tag the article with the template {{Unreferenced}}, so long as the article is not nonsensical or a biography of a living person, in which case request admin assistance. If a particular claim in an article lacks citation and is doubtful, consider placing {{fact}} after the sentence or removing it. This will add a citation needed label. ... If a claim is doubtful but not harmful to the whole article or to Wikipedia, use the {{fact}} tag, but remember to go back and remove the claim if no source is produced within a reasonable time. (Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Unsourced_material) - Leonard G. (talk) 17:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
