Collections Management Systems Analysis

SIRIS (Smithsonian Institution Research Information Systems) Analysis

The SIRIS database could potentially be a helpful template for our articles on IUPUI sculpture. However, most of the entries are fairly brief with only one or two documenting photographs. The entry is broken up into basic sections, such as artist, title, dates, materials, owner, etc. I really like how the basic entry is linked to others through the "subject" and "object type" categories. This kind of linking can lead to a comparison between sculptures on many different levels.

It would be great if we could link our articles to larger themes. For example, if I wrote the article on James Wille Faust's Herron Arch, it should be linked in Wikipedia to other Faust sculptures, the bio of Faust himself, sculptures of the same material, and even the arch form in art. Also, we should have more photographic documentation of our sculptures than SIRIS displays. There should be a photograph of the front, proper left, back, and proper right sides, as well as any details of specific damages. SIRIS provides dynamic images for some of its entries. This gives the viewer the ability to zoom in and out. This would be advantageous if the images were high res. However, most of the images in SIRIS do not seem to be. I do not know if we would have this option on Flikr, but with this option, the specific condition details of the sculpture could be examined further.

Pros and Cons of the Database

Pros: Dynamic Pictures, Accessible online, easily links to similar sculptures, has distinct search categories

Cons: Not nearly comprehensive of all sculptures in the United States, information is not completely up to date, contains only 1-2 pictures of the pieces, not the most "user friendly" interface

Indiana's Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS) Project Analysis

The Indiana SOS! archive is only available at the Resource Center at Historical Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. It's great for us that the headquarters is in Indianapolis, but overall, it's pretty inconvenient. The Indiana Historical Bureau's website offers resources for further research, but none can be accessed via the internet.

The main resource I analyzed for this section was Glory June Greiff's book Remembrance, Faith, and Fancy: Outdoor Sculpture in Indiana. Perhaps, the first negative of this material is that it is not available online. The book seems to be more of an overview of public art around the state than a "database" of every sculpture. Since it was published in 2005, any work produced after that is not included. The second section of the book analyzes sculptures county by county, but again, does not cover all sculptures in the area.

This is a good reference work that will give great general background on our sculptures, especially when we are collecting data. For example, the book mentions how many of the public sculptures on IUPUI's campus came to be, "The University College held its first call for sculpture entries in 1998, seeking submissions from students and alumni of the Herron School of Art." I can see this being especially helpful if this information could be accessed on some sort of iPod or iPhone application, especially because we will be out and about gathering information.

Pros and Cons of the Database

Pros: Great reference, gives good general background information about sculpture around Indianapolis, narrower focus (just Indiana) than the SIRIS database

Cons: Not really a database, no entries after 2005, inaccessible on the web, not comprehensive of every sculpture in Indiana

Wikipedia Article Analysis

L'Absinthe

The first article I examined was L'Absinthe or the Absinthe Drinker, an Edgar Degas painting (One of my favorites). This article gives good basic information about the painting, but could be vastly improved. For example, the description of the piece is very vague; it does not even mention that it is an oil on canvas. One thing I noticed right away was that there were only two citations. This painting is very well known and probably highly researched, and that is not visible on this page. This article could also include history on the piece, i.e. where it has been. The author says it is at the Musée D'Orsay, but I am pretty sure it was housed at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume before this. Our articles on IUPUI sculpture should acknowledge history, if we are able to obtain the information. The article mentions interesting tidbits and opinions on the sculpture when it debuted in the "criticisms" section. It would be interesting if our articles contained a section on opinions of art critics, but again, this might not be available. The article is also categorized under "1876 paintings." It might be advantageous to classify our articles by the year the sculptures were created.

Mardi Gras in Mobile

I also analyzed the article Mardi Gras in Mobile. Unlike the L'Absinthe article, this one is very thorough. This article gives a detailed history of Mardi Gras in Mobile and reviews the happenings of today. It also breaks down the traditions of floats, costumes, throws (beads, doubloons, etc.), king cake, and flambeaux carriers. The article even provides a schedules of the parades. This article is linked to a similar article Mardi Gras in New Orleans, as well as a larger article Mardi Gras in the United States, which then is linked to the article on Mardi Gras. If someone was researching Mardi Gras, they would have a full picture of the holiday and how it is celebrated throughout the world. This article displays how good Wikipedia pages can be if they are detail oriented, extensively linked, and highly organized. I think it would be helpful if all of our articles were linked in someway to each other, even creating a category "public art at IUPUI." We could even write a general overview article on IUPUI sculpture that all of our articles could be linked to.

Cefalù

I also examined the article on Cefalù. Cefalù is a small city in on the northern coast of Sicily where my grandfather grew up. The article is rather short. The history section could be expanded; it's only a couple paragraphs long. The article also briefly mentions main sights of the town. This part is linked to a section on the Cathedral of Cefalù, which is more detailed that the article on Cefalù itself. It seems like hierarchy is missing with these articles. The article about the town itself should be more extensive than the article on its cathedral. One beneficial part of this article is the map of Italy that displays the location of Cefalu. Our articles could maybe contain a map of campus that show the location of the sculptures, so that someone could find them easily if they were searching. Go GPS!

Pros and Cons of the Database

Pros: Highly accessible, has the capability of being highly organized and linked through categories, however it is not universal (Some articles are categorized better than others), can be edited and updated easily

Cons: Not the most trustworthy resource, no set template for articles, some articles are quite complete while others are lacking integral information

Potential Categories for our Wikipedia Project

Public Art on College Campuses

A great category for Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia Saves Public Art! would be "public art on college campuses." This category does not exist yet, but I think it could begin an interesting investigation. There is quite a bit of art on college campuses that goes undocumented. Having our Wikipedia project linked to this category could spur others to take a closer look at the art on their campus, and the importance on preserving it for their community. This could even perhaps become a sub category for public art or outdoor sculpture. Under the outdoor sculpture category, one interesting sub category is Sculpture Gardens, trails and parks. The proposed "public art on college campuses" category is similar to this one, because it organizes information about art at a very specific location with a specific intent.

Outdoor Sculptures in Indianapolis

Another somewhat obvious category for our articles about public art on IUPUI's campus might be Category: outdoor sculptures in Indianapolis If anyone was researching art in the city, they would most likely investigate this category. Our collection of IUPUI sculpture should be included in this category, because the school is an important facet of the Indianapolis, Indiana. However, I think the category should be renamed "public art in Indianapolis," so it encompasses a wider range of art in the city.

Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis

I just discovered that there is an exclusive IUPUI category. Category: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is not only an article, but is a category in itself. Our report on the sculptures should also be included in this category. The category does not contain a lot of information, and has a lot of potential to be developed. Our articles would definitely serve this purpose. Also, by including our articles in this category, it would display how important these sculptures are (or should be, at least!) to the campus.
