Asking permission from subjects of photographs[edit]

Generally speaking, the subject of a photograph is not the owner of the copyright on the photograph. Usually, it is the actual photographer who must release the photograph for reuse. Please stop uploading non-free images and asking the subjects of the photos to email Wikipedia and give permission; in most cases they cannot legally do so, and it is clear that you have totally failed to explain to them how Wikipedia's licencing works. Even if they do own the copyright to the image, they cannot simply say "You can use this picture on Wikipedia"; they need to provide a suitable declaration of consent such as that found at WP:CONSENT.

Please do not upload any further images until you have familiarised yourself with Wikipedia's Image use policy and the free licences that must be used for images. You are wasting volunteers' time, you are wasting the photographic subjects' time, and you are violating the photographers' legal ownership of the copyright. ArbCom 2017 election voter message[edit]
