Did you know?

Did you know that you can easily re-arrange columns and rows in the visual editor?

Select a cell in the column or row that you want to move. Click the arrow at the start of that row or column to open the dropdown menu (shown). Choose either "Move before" or "Move after" to move the column, or "Move above" or "Move below" to move the row.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving language support.

Recent changes

• You can now set text as small or big.[1]
• Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[2] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[3]
• Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[4]
• At many wikis, you can now add maps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department are adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more on MediaWiki.org.[5]
• The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[6] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
• Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[7]

Future changes

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10 "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including Thai, Burmese and Aramaic.

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The 2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Citroën TUB pioneering forward control design/Peugeot DMA first forward control from the marque

Hi Charles01, I deleted two statements from the Peugeot DMA article, because I consider them incorrect. The first was the "pioneering" aspect of the forward control cabin used on the Citroën TUB. The design was pretty common before the TUB introduction, and even in France it was used by both military and commercial cargo vehicles (as the Renault AGP and the Panhard K 101), well before the introduction of the TUB. I would say that, as it happens with many Citroëns, the notable about the TUB isn't single innovations, but the fact it was one of the first cargo vehicles that put together several design aspects in a way that then would become standard. I also removed the statement saying the DMA was the first forward control commercial vehicle of Peugeot because I consider it at least dubious, as I think they had at least one before the war with a limited production volume, although I don't remember its name.

I suspect that you are better informed on the subject than I am. If I were to look at it, I might be able to remember why I wrote it the way I did. Most likely it came from French wikipedia or German wikipedia or (less likely) Italian or Dutch wikipedia. And/or from something written by Rene Bellu and/or something I found online. But I am more than happy for you to enter well considered corrections. That is how wikipedia works, I think. Where corrections come with sources, tant mieux, but in this case I suspect that there may have been no "inline" citations obviously supporting the adjective "pioneering".

On a forward control pre-war Peugeot commercial, I'm not so sure.... The Peugeot range through history is easier to "know" than that of most automakers because the museum at Sochaux really does take you through the history of the vehicles more or less from the beginning. And I am lucky enough to have been able to visit it every few years since about 1995 - last time was 2015[8]. And I don't remember ever seeing a forward control commercial vehicle from before the war on display there. My understanding had been that this was why it was positive that the Chenard et Walcker van plugged a gap[9]. But I don't know everything. And I CERTAINLY don't remember everything. And none of this is evidenced in a way that would lead me to argue with your judgement in removing the statement in question.

Incidently I still think the Citroën TUB was remarkable in its time. But maybe I've simply been taken in by the Citroën propaganda machine? (Sad it didn't always work out so well for their investors...)

Small digression: I did not find a wiki entry for the Renault AGP or the Panhard K 101. Should I be looking under different names? Or are they both vehicles without wiki entries? In which case .... well, you know the next question. But of course only if you have time (- and access to sources, of course).

Thanks for the answer Charles01. Well, the TUB is in fact pretty notable, at least because it was one of the first vans with, I would say, a "modern" desing both from the styling and technical sides, and surely the first from France. In fact, it was modern-looking that some late Citroën vans...

If you can confirm in any form (or if you are completely sure that's the case) that the DMA was in fact the first forward control Peugeot in commercial use, please re-add the info. I don't see the point in opposing so firmly something I'm not completely sure... I'll research more and if can confirm it I'll re-add it myself.

The AGP and the K 101 haven't articles as far as I know... because they're not easy tasks, they didn't have articles on the French Wikipedia, which proves the info isn't specially abundant. Still, that never stopped me before :). I promise I'll do research on both, and if I find a minimum of substantial info beyond brochures and passing mentions in books I'll try to give them articles. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Hi

I'm not really web-smart enough (or wiki-patient enough), to handle the admin involved in participating in all these challenges simultaneously, but I have been listing my biographical contributions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki for a year or so, and if anyone wants to go through the monthly archived batches and harvest any relevant articles for inclusion in projects embracing Scandinavia, women or any other currently favoured sub-category of humanity, you are very welcome to do so. Then again, it may have been done already when I wasn't looking.
