Commas

Hi. I saw that you reverted my edit at the Dan Orlovsky page. I added a comma in, and you took it out. I am not sure if you are aware ... but years require a comma both before and after. This statement is found in the Wikipedia article on comma ... in the section for "Uses" and the sub-section called "In dates". It says there: When a date is written as a month followed by a day followed by a year, a comma separates the day from the year: December 7, 1941. This style is common in American English. Additionally, most style manuals, including the Chicago Manual of Style[7] and the AP Stylebook,[8] recommend that the year be treated as a parenthetical, requiring a second comma after it: "Feb. 14, 1987, was the target date." Easter eggs

Here's my opinion on this. The link should go where the reader expects it to go. The infobox link says College: Illinois, it should go to the university article. The text says he played for the Illinois Fighting Illini, the link should go there (or the football team article would not be unexpected). I opened a discussion at WT:NFL#Naming conventions to see if we can quit naming our articles as if they are about soccer players. I think that at least three editors have spoken out against the way DoubleBlue is naming these articles, yet he persists. Now I have an admin telling me to get a consensus on a talk page. I know it's true, but they don't need to be on the templates if the teams don't even have them on reserve lists. O.J. Atogwe, seriously? He's a third-round NFL draft pick and a star safety. He's never played in Canada and he never will. It's just not relevant. if we're talking about a guy who was with a team, like perhaps a Stefan Logan or Cameron Wake, then left for the NFL, that's one thing. But some of those guys have been NFL players from Day 1, and always will be. Just read the article, I suggest you do the same. You're completely wrong here and your edits were made under inaccurate interpretations of the article. I agree with not having them on the roster. It would obviously get to ridiculous lengths to include everyone who was ever drafted but not yet signed on the roster. Atogwe, for instance, is already listed in the 2004 CFL Draft and 2004 BC Lions season article and that seems quite sufficient. On a related note, I think the whole "deferred" section of these templates should be removed. Their rights may be held for a particular time by a particular team but they are not on the team roster and I think our template should match that. DoubleBlue (talk) 04:49, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure, their CFL rights are held by that team but I don't believe that all the players on a team's list should be added to the roster template. It would make for a very long and not useful "roster". It should be noted on the individual player's article but beyond that, it's not of interest. The roster should be a list of people currently signed to play for the team. Chris, not sure if you knew this was even AFD'd or not, but I recreated the Dan Gore page that you originally authored. I added several articles that seem to lend notability. Nope, they aren't under contract. Lots of teams let players attend minicamps on a tryout basis, then sign them to a contact if they feel like it. It happens a done after the draft. You have your UDFAs the team signs, but then you also have the even lower tier guys that get to attend the minicamp as a tryout.►Chris Nelson^Holla! 23:25, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Probably not. What you'd do is if they sign with the Bears later, you could say "Cox originally attended a Bears minicamp on a tryout basis on this date and signed with them on this date." Or if they sign with another team, you could say something like "Cox worked out for the Bears on this date but was not signed. He was later signed by the Jets on this date." And so on.
