October 2010[edit]

Before adding a possibly inappropriate external link to an article, please discuss the changes on the article's talk page first, as this is normally considered spam. You are welcome to continue contributing, but please keep in mind that Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links, and failure to abide by these policies could unfortunately get you blocked or even banned. Thank you. -MBK004 07:14, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

P.S., your additions of external links to marginally related articles is definitely an attempt at linkspam and will not be tolerated. So far you have behaved with a single-purpose of promoting this command. I warn you that promotion is not something we take kindly here, and all of your edits so far suggests that you are involved with the command in some way or even employed to advertise them. This is a conflict of interest which we cannot allow if it is true. -MBK004 07:14, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am new to editing Wikipedia, although I have been a long-time reader. I am employed at NWDC, I am the Portal Administrator there. My purpose is to (a) build a Wiki page for our command, and (b) ensure any page that references our command points to our portal, which has changed. I see nothing wrong with adding a link on a page for Naval Station Norfolk, for example, because we are BASED there. I do see that some of the pages I edited yesterday simply reference a document hosted on our site, I agree that I should have just corrected the link and not add an external link. However, I still think most of my entries were valid.
You mention conflict of interest, do you seriously expect people who work at a given place to not be involved when their company is referenced on Wikipedia? I mean, I did not offer any sort of opinion on any page, just made a link to our site. We are a government entity, not a private company. A Wal-Mart employee changing a Wiki page to make Wal-Mart look good is a valid COI, but simply tying together related pages is not, IMO.
I appreciate any help in learning the netiquette here, even though you come heavy-handed.Christopher Douglas (talk) 12:14, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of tenant units at Norfolk, and we don't need external links for all of them. There is no issue with fixing external links that already exist to reflect an updated URL; actually, fixing linkrot is a commendable editing practice. But introducing links to articles where the relation isn't even tenuous, such as this edit is just not acceptable practice.
To your point about COI, it is a very fine line to walk. However, it would be better for you to err on the side of caution and avoid editing anything relating to your parent command until you have gained a good deal of experience in editing the encyclopedia (and learn about the five pillars, especially verifiability). bahamut0013wordsdeeds 16:33, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Wendi B. Carpenter, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.navyweek.org/littlerock2010/sailors.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
