Etymology[edit]

What is the general policy on etymology of words? When is it appropriate and when is it not? Should we pretty much always add it if it's known?

Here is a simple example - I was fixing the article on "abstention," the term for when a voting party declines to vote, and quickly found out that the word came from the 14th century French word abstenir meaning "to withhold oneself." This would have been a short sentence and wouldn't have mattered either way but it made me wonder about what to do more generally. I'm not quite sure whether I like etymology as a wikipedia reader or whether I think it is a waste of space. Thoughts?

Do I post somewhere else for things like this?

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box.
