GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)

Biography subject

I'd like to ask your help in creating a biography article on reporter Bob Wyrick. I've got some COI in the subject so I don't want to touch it, but I'm sure the fellow's notable. I did a little looking and wrote some very rough notes but haven't dug very far. I'd appreciate it if you could take a look to see if you think there's a stub or an article in it. Either way I'll leave it alone except for this request. Cloveapple (talk) 08:16, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

  • As an award-winning author and journalist, I think there's certainly enough information to support developing an article about him. Just make sure not to focus on articles simply because he wrote them. A journalist doesn't inherit notability by reporting about notable individuals or events. Focus on the honors and awards received for the specific work for which he has done. Bring information and content to the article that supports Wyrick individually as a notable person. Sometimes, it gets a bit tricky writing articles about journalists, because there is often quite a bit of information to be found with his name attached. That said, the journalist is generally not the notable subject. Just work on the draft in a subpage of your userspace. Then when it is ready and fully supported through significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of Wyrick and his associates and employers, ask for a review before moving it to the mainspace. Feel free to contact me at any time if you need help with anything. I'm happy to jump in and do whatever you need. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 21:54, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
    • Thanks for the excellent advice. I've created or worked on other articles but I'm not comfortable working on this one because of the COI issues that are involved for me. I don't think I can give the article the neutrality it requires. I asked you because I've seen you working on various biographies and thought you might have an interest in at least a stub. The Tea Leaf - Issue Two

Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
Springtime means fresh tea leaves...
  • First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
  • Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
  • Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
  • Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. -- Sarah (talk) 21:36, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Your HighBeam account is ready!

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:36, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Stories Project

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I asked Sarah Stierch who might be good to talk to, and she gave me your name.

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project.

Thank you for your time,

Victor Grigas

Chinese Christian Church (Milson's Point)

Just for reference, I converted your speedy deletion tagging of Chinese Christian Church (Milson's Point) with a Prod, because I felt that there was a credible claim of importance (being the largest Chinese Christian culture in Australia), but also agree that without sources and more info, it doesn't meet WP:GNG, so prod is appropriate. I'll take it to AfD if the prod is removed and no sources are provided. Qwyrxian (talk) 09:42, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Pipeworks

I've commented on the Speedy Deletion page. The article itself is now in the process of being fleshed out and follows the format of other microbrewery articles on Wikipedia. Like I said on the SD page, the article isn't 24 hours old yet, and I hadn't much of a chance to get anything done last night before going to work. It is, in fact, a notable article if you are a member of Wikiproject Beer, or Wikiproject Chicago. Ryecatcher773 (talk) 16:10, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

CE and Minor editing

Hi Cindy, your edit summary here said "Copyedit (minor)". However, this isn't a copyedit and it isn't minor. A minor copyedit would involve something like fixing capitalization or spelling. You made a content change to the page. Content changes shouldn't be marked as minor edits and they're not copyedits. Please see here for the policy on marking edits as minor. Maybe you were tired and just made a mistake, but please be careful. Thank you. Pine(talk) 09:35, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Hey there! Thanks for contacting me. You are correct. The edit summary and mark as a minor edit were made through the automatic (default) edit summary software, clearly made in error. Tricky little devil sometimes. I intended to go back and make a dummy edit summary to clarify, but then I got sidetracked. The information about the previous incarnation of the Steering Committee and their future involvement in the Education Program did not support the content in the paragraph, appearing rather as an arbitrary afterthought. I went to edit the grammar, but chose to simply remove the content as inapplicable to the current status of the program. Hope you are well. Again, thanks for contacting me. GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Just wondering why you threw the BLP sources tag on this article. It's a stub, but there is a high quality citation from the Chicago Tribune discussion her political position. Cheers Dkriegls (talk) 04:16, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

  • While the Trib is reliable, all articles require significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. One reference is not considered significant. The BLP sources tag was placed in lieu of BLP unsourced, due to the Trib citation. Can you add more to the article? Keep in mind that the Political Graveyard is wholly unreliable. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 05:26, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I see you went ahead and took the initiative :) I'm still interested in the reasoning for your BLP action though; just trying to learn. Doesn't Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Politicians trump significant coverage? A reliable source stating that they "held international, national or sub-national (statewide/provincewide) office" should suffice for notability. That's my understanding anyways. Just wondering if you had a different way of viewing things. Dkriegls (talk) 00:13, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Most times, I place a tag as a personal reminder to go back later to fix the issues myself. I couldn't find much about her parents though, which was a bit frustrating! ;) There's often confusion over the notability criteria. Meeting one of the criteria under Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Politicians does not solidify or confirm notability, or trump the requirement for significant coverage. It is simply an indicator that the subject may be notable. Likely or presumed to be notable, but confirmed through significant reliable and independent sources. The guidelines say, "Failure to meet these criteria is not conclusive proof that a subject should not be included; conversely, meeting one or more does not guarantee that a subject should be included." It still comes back to the requirement that claims of notability must be supported through significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. Hope that helps. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 00:30, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Hm, If you're using that as a personal reminder, that makes sense. Cheers and happy editing. Dkriegls (talk) 03:46, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

RE: Userspace deletion requests

I want to delete my entire account User:stywuschik, if possible. If not, only pages. I´ve created an universal account Seti6908 and would like to have only one. Best regards--Seti6908 (talk) 16:33, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Okay. Thanks. Best regards--Seti6908 (talk) 17:30, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Dr.Jitendra Nath Gohain requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. A:-)Brunuś (talk) 17:50, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

The editor who posted above has a problem with speedy tagging: you might want to have a read of his talk page, and add some advice of your own. Thanks, Scopecreep (talk) 17:52, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
  • I have done so. Thanks. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 18:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

May 2012

Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with Jitendra Nath Gohain. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Click here to contest this speedy deletion, which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. A:-)Brunuś (talk) 17:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

  • I did not create the Jitendra Nath Gohain, but declined your A7, due to clear indication of importance and/or significance. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 17:59, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
    • You did create this article — see page history A:-)Brunuś (talk) 18:02, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
      • Uh, no, there was an edit conflict in the system when another editor deleted the article for promotional content. I am not the originator of the article. As stated on your talkpage, please review the criteria for speedy deletion before nominating anymore articles for deletion. Thanks. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 18:09, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Company names

I don't see that convention being applied in Microsoft, Dell, Intel or many other company articles for that matter. Neither is it prescribed for in the infobox documentation, else why would there be a name parameter at all? Regards, --Tærkast (Discuss) 10:07, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Checking out the documentation, I can see that apparently not all infoboxes are created equal. The general rationale has been to forego adding the infobox header, when the image provides a wordmark, in an effort to reduce redundancy and unclutter the article. This guidance has been a primary part of reviewing articles, and long been the case when name fields are not required, as is the case with the infobox parameters for companies. That said, it is clearly not included in the infobox documentation as you have shown. I certainly wouldn't be opposed if you were to replace the infobox header accordingly. Thanks for bringing the discrepancy to my attention. It may be that there was an RFC that somehow crept past my prying eyes. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 14:32, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Nah, it's no problem :). --Tærkast (Discuss) 18:17, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

HI, you declined this db-bio nom, saying that the entry asserts notability as a university president, but that's not what the entry claims (he heads a group connected to a University). Maybe you want to revisit this? If you still think it passes speedy, that's fine; I didn't want to retag it without consulting you. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 18:05, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Dang, clearly I read that wrong. I honestly thought it was a weird name for a university, but thought to give the benefit of the doubt to see what sources would turn up. At this point, I certainly don't think it passes a speedy, but since the A7 was declined, however absolutely boneheaded it was on my part, I would probably opt to wait out the BLPPROD and see what comes of it. Either way, it will most certainly be deleted. Adding another A7 would probably raise red flags of another kind, but at this point, I fully support deletion. What are your thoughts? Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 18:23, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
I really don't expect this to go anywhere, deletion is probably inevitable. If you want to just let the PROD run out, that's fine with me. Hairhorn (talk) 00:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
