Placement of stub tags

In your recent edit of The Secret of Isis you placed the stub tag after the categories. My understanding of Wikistyle is that the stub tag goes before the categories, but after all other text. Thanks for pointing this out. I had noticed a number of pages where the stub followed which automatically allowed a space between the stub and the final sentence of the article (a few stubs I had placed as well had been moved) so I assumed there had been a change in the style. Superman Returns

I had to remove the production information you added because it contained redundant information. The distributor, director, etc is already listed in the infobox and the introductory paragraph. All those secondary production companies are not significant enough to require noting. If you wish to add something, that deals with production, that you believe is significant then add it to the infobox to the right of the page; that is where it belongs. Thanks. Good work on cleaning up some of the 5 college art museum sites -- it looks like the combined database for the art collections is at the Five College Museums/Historic Deerfield web site instead of Museums10, and I've updated the Mead Art Museum, Mt. Holyoke Art Museum, Historic Deerfield, Five College Museums/Historic Deerfield, Art Galleries, and Museums10 pages to reflect its location. I think that database has been getting shuffled around, but its one of the best around. Smawnmahlau

Bookstore articles

Howdy! Thanks for your attention to the bookstore articles. Please use {{retail-stub}} for the stub articles, though, because {{book-stub}} is used for books themselves, and sometimes book terminology. Thanks for the feedback! What you are saying makes sense - independent bookstores are retail, but they provide a number of other services related to the community and to literature (sometimes in a way which is similar to Salon (gathering)s), which is why I was trying to be more specific.

I wonder if a stub could be created which is called independent bookstore stub - or something else which is a bit more specific to the nature of independent bookstores? I'm thinking in terms of stubs such as the publish-stub for articles about companies that work with books.

That way, there isn't the confusion that you raise with "book" and the stub is a little more specific than the wider category of "retail." -- Classicfilms 15 May 2006.

History of Mount Holyoke College

You reverted my edit, asking that I quote directly from the source. It is, unfortunately, poorly worded for quotation inclusion directly into the article. I'm going to reintroduce without the loaded word that you specifically referenced. It is used in the source however, "In fact, Mount Holyoke gained a reputation as a 'rib factory.'" Hi Classicfilms. Glad to see that a supporter of women's education. In looking at the history of edits for the Miss Hall's article, I notice that you edited a considerable amount of information out of the article citing NPOV. I believe the deleted text does give information about the school- what I believe to be the purpose of Wikipedia. For example, information about the leadership program, school affiliations, and the school motto were deleted. These are simply factual information about the organization. I would like to develop the article as you suggested so I plan to restore some edits. Just wanted to know how to do so, keeping NPOV in mind.

Sure, sounds like a great idea! I removed material from that page which had been copied directly from the Miss Hall's website. This violates Wikipedia's editing policy. If you want to give factual, objective information about the school, simply summarize the areas you want to talk about and give a URL which acts as a reference to your claim. NPOV edits usually involve removing material which presents the information in a subjective way - however, if you can support your claim with a reference , it should be fine. In that case, you should quote directly. Take a look at the Mount Holyoke College page which I've worked on and look at other school sites to get an idea of how they should be edited. Podokesaurus

Hi Classicfilms, Thanks for your recent edit to Podokesaurus. However, I did revert your edit. You added the specific name to the top of the article. According to the decision on Wikipedia's WikiProject:Tree of Life, articles are only supposed to go down to the genus level. The article should mention species within the genus, but the article itself should be about the genus. Your recent change, moving the full name to the top of the article, made the article about the species, which is why it was reverted. If you have further questions, feel free to send me a message. Does the list in Hidden Ivies really omit Rutgers?

In Public Ivies, you quoted a list from an appendix to Hidden Ivies. As quoted, the list does not included Rutgers, a surprising omission given that they had included it in their book on "public ivies." Hi Dpbsmith (talk) - Sure, I'm happy to check. Appendix II, page 303, titled "Other Colleges and Universities of Excellence", is divided into three parts. The first is "Middle Size Private Universities" which does not (and would not) include Rutgers since Rutgers is a state school. The second part is titled "State Universities" and lists the schools I placed on the Public Ivies page - Rutgers is not included. The third part on page 304 is "Scientific and Technical Universities" which does not list Rutgers. There is another section on page 304, "Additional Colleges of Note", but this also does not list Rutgers. I checked in the index and Rutgers is not listed. -Classicfilms 14:15, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Womens' College category

I noticed that you're removing people from Category:Alumnae of women's universities and colleges. I don't see any discussion related to the large scale removal of people from this category. Hi ElKevbo - Good question, thanks for the post. I was following this guideline Wikipedia:Categorization and subcategories, which states that an "article should not be in both a category and its subcategory." I removed the main category Category:Alumnae of women's universities and colleges from articles which also included subcategories also listed on that page (such as Radcliffe College alumni, Smith College alumni etc.). I also did not remove the main category Category:Alumnae of women's universities and colleges from articles which did not have a related subcategory. -Classicfilms 16:15, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I do have a question. Since it is fairly common knowledge that wikipedia is a human based knowledge system that tends to be full of inaccuracies, I was wondering how you got appointed to police wikipedia postings or are you just freelancing? You seem to have some interest in these pages but there are lots of other pages with far more glaring inaccuracies so I am just trying to understand if you are self appointed or what. Hi Mhclucifer, I appreciate the feedback. Actually, the Wikipedia is monitored by thousands of editors from all over the world, who are all obligated to adhere to the guidelines outlined above. Initially, the rules are a bit overwhelming at first, but easier once you get the hang of it. MoHo

I'm pretty new at editing Wikipedia. I think I'm going about this the right way, but please let me know if I should be posting this kind of question somewhere else.

In the Overview: General facts section of Mount Holyoke College, you replaced the word "Students" with "MoHo's" followed by a parenthetical explanation of the term. To me as a reader, "students" seems like a clearer term for this part of the article, making it easier to absorb the basic facts like the number of students. The slang term, though interesting, isn't a central fact so it's a bit distracting; it might fit better in the section on student life. Also, have you come across a published source for "MoHo" or its relation to "PoMo"? This would be worth citing.

Data and Integrity

I've been away for a bit. But I still am frustrated by your ideas about data and integrity. So I am going to continue to talk to you about this.

First, the so called "Olympic databases" that you refer to probably are very lacking in data integrity. By that I mean they have never been officially audited or validated. And I believe your sources only include winners for the older Olympics and not the full participants from each country's teams. And data integrity is something I have a long professional experience with.

Second, I don't know why you don't think first hand accounts are invalid. I assume you have heard of oral histories. And even newspapers (onlinen or otherwise) have to get their information from somewhere. And the news media is less than stellar in its handling of facts. I mean reporters make stuff up (lots of high profile recent cases). And having been in a demonstration in the 70s that Time magazine printed a report about, I can assure that either the editors or the reporters botched their facts royally. Because the printed report bore no semblance to the reality of that day. So which is right? And the other problematic thing with data sources can be shown by attendance numbers at rallies/demonstations. The cops, press, and organizers invariably have 3 different numbers for these events.

And if I find an online reference to something and can provide it to you even if it doesn't agree with your online sources of data, then which is right? Mhclucifer 19:19, 6 May 2007 (UTC)mhclucifer

Ok, these are fair questions. Generally, when making a contribution to the Wikipedia, all editors must comply with community rules which are outlined here - Wikipedia:Five pillars. All edits must conform with this policy in particular, Wikipedia:Verifiability which is why an edit which is not backed up by a source can be challenged by any editor to the Wikipedia. That being said, you make valid points above and perhaps the solution would be to track down official records from the Olympics as the goal isn't pushing one source over another but rather to provide information which is backed up by substantial sources to comply with Wikipedia:Attribution - my suggestion (since other Wikipedians may raise the same issue) would be to revert my edit back to your original one and, using your reference to back it up - and then if you could find a secondary, reliable source to back it up, it would strengthen the edit. This doesn't have to be an online source by the way and in fact I prefer hard copy footnotes. Thanks for writing -Classicfilms 19:33, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Preview Editing before Saving?

Hello Classicfilms,

Wow! It appears you've done hundreds of edits on articles, many in a single article (e.g. Mount Holyoke College) that are just minutes apart. I am wondering if it wouldn't be more conducive to Preview the article after making each change, then Save only after you are finished making the several edits, as so the History is not cluttered with so many entries...

...but, then again, I'm a newbie to this myself, (and you've been doing it since 2005), so what do I know :-)

I tried to integrate some of the people on the list into the main article, but could actually only find a clear connection to Jackson in two cases (Coover and Landow taught her at Brown.) Do you know how the other people (who seem to be electronic literature authors or critics) connect to Jackson? Hi Hobbesy3 - thanks for the note. You are right, it was a pretty old edit. Since it looks like you are currently editing the page, perhaps you would be interested in integrating this information? Here are some suggestions:
Go ahead and delete the "See also" that I created - it was a pretty old edit, made awhile ago and as you point out it really makes more sense to integrate the information. Replace it with just one wikilink to the Electronic Literature Organization (which Jackson is affiliated with). These critics have all at one point or another written or commented on Jackson's work (particularly "Patchwork Girl") - a good place to begin is with N. Katherine Hayles and her book, My Mother Was a Computer. You can see portions of this book and other works by critics on scholar.google here. The school has been on my radar screen for a long time, essentially because I felt sorry for both the school and the article, but I know almost nothing about the school and didn't have any information to add to the article. It has been gratifying to see you build the formerly pathetic article into an interesting and informative piece, completely with sources. Thanks so much for the barnstar! What a nice surprise, particularly since I am trying my best to cut back a bit on my WP time... I am trying to build up the article Women's colleges in the United States and Barber-Scotia College became part of the collection. It has been interesting to learn its important and prestigious history. I'm glad that the WP could contribute to it. I have appreciated your feedback and am always open to suggestions and advice.
