The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow![edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! WikiProject Darts[edit]

If Wikipedia:WikiProject Darts (which you deleted) and any associated material wasn't deleted via a consensus decision at WP:MFD (no MFD was cited in the deletion rationale, which cited no CSD reasons, either), I would suggest it should probably be restored. There has actually been increased dart-related editing activity, e.g. Glossary of darts, etc. It seems likely to me that a sport/game of this level of notability (i.e. almost a common as pool in the US and Canada and probably twice as common in the UK) will easily support a functional WikiProject with rather minimal "advertising". A project does not have to be overwhelmingly active to be consistently useful, year after year (cf. WP:CUE). I'm liable to join it myself, mostly for cleanup work (I'm one of the more active consistency-bent editors at WP:SPORTS and WP:GAMES). — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 13:23, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS: No bitching intended; I'd just like the project materials back (page, any relevant templates, etc.). I can whip a moribund project and its categories and stuff into shape pretty quickly, as I recently did with WP:PINBALL. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 13:25, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Um... the project you're discussing was never actually started, and was less than a stub of a project. It had three edits in a year (including one revert), no talk page, and the entire project consisted of less than 50 words (and no templates). If ever there was a WP:SNOWBALL case, that was it. In the two and a half years ago since I've deleted it, nobody's recreated it, so perhaps it's time. However, there's nothing in the original project to salvage. – ClockworkSoul 16:15, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That bad, huh? Yeesh. Alrighty, I guess I'll take it to the Council proposals page. Thanks for the note. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 02:41, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ClockworkSoul, a WP friend noticed that you and I are in the background in this nice Jimbo picture, over his shoulder on the left. So we did kind-of get our picture taken with him after all! Best wishes for your thesis work. Invertzoo (talk) 16:39, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter[edit]

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WikiCup 2010 February newsletter[edit]

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WikiCup 2010 March newsletter[edit]

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. Hello. I want to standardize my user talk headers along these lines but I can't find a customizable template. I know there is no such word, so there may be no such tool :^\ Can you show me where to start? This is a low priority request, so any time you can spare would be appreciated. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter[edit]

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! "Borrowed" your template.[edit]

Hi ClockworkSoul, Ipfreely555 here. A few Many years back (in year 7 to be precise) I viewed your user page and thought it was amazing; to such an extent that I... well... copy pasted most of your coding (I was a dumbass in year 7). It's been a long while and I've noticed your user page looks EXACTLY THE SAME, far from the flooded edits on my page. You've always promoted you wiki-ing skills (I've only just mastered WikiCoding myself, in my opinion) and you may like to view my user page. Most of the coding looks the same, I still use the same orange-like colour you use for example, yet all of my pages have the same-theme-and-logo design yous lacks. Most of the content on my autobiography is just plain nonsense (again, I was a dumbass in year 7) and haven't gotten around to changing it.
The design is what I'm offering; come check it out. --Michael SumanIpfreely555 13:58, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name change?[edit]

Is there possibly a way that I could change my username here on Wikipedia? I want to retain my edits yet not the humiliation that comes with having a name picked from a cereal box. I've edited my signature to mask this, currently it's michaelIPF5suman, but the name remains a bit odd. Is there any way I could do this myself, discuss changes on a talk page or something along these lines? I cannot think of a replacement name as this moment, let me wait a while before I make any big decisions. --MICHAELIPF5SUMANTalk 12:04, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beer[edit]

Heya Silk! It's been too long! How have you been? I'm just rolling through to give you a quick heads up that I replied to your post on Talk:Beer. I just wanted to be sure you didn't miss it! Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 17:15, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hiccup atcha Clock! It seems there's a bit more to think about than I first realised. Thanks for the heads up. I've adjusted the lead again - but I think it's going to take a bit more work. The whole article really needs a good polish, as there are some other statements in there that may not be secure. I've been working on the Brewing article for a little while now, as I feel that has needed some attention - though really, the beer and brewing articles go hand in hand somewhat and should be developed together.
I'm fine. Can't remember last time we talked. Probably when there was an edit war on a beer article - probably Beer style as that was the one that used to provoke the worse fights between the pro- and anti- BJCP people. Those fights appear to have stopped - but not before they did considerable damage. The BeerProject is now pretty much inactive. People walked away because of all that damn stupid in-fighting - and I don't blame them. I stopped contributing to beer articles for a long while because it was so unpleasant. I remember you making a heroic stand one day and trying to get everyone to see sense. I felt bad because I wanted to support you, but it just went on and on, and I didn't have the stamina to keep up with it after a while. Did someone get blocked in the end? SilkTork *YES! 22:16, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that was pretty ugly. Those conflicts festered for years, bringing progress on beer article more or less to a complete standstill. I had to walk away too... there was that one editor in particular who just wouldn't budge, as I'm sure you remember. We would make progress and reach a consensus (or nearly so), and he would kick us all back to square one. A few people did end up getting blocked for blatant sock-puppeteering, but that was it. It's been a while, though. Do you think it's safe to go back into the water... er... beer? – ClockworkSoul 22:24, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've just looked and it's been almost a year. SilkTork *YES! 22:35, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's time to try to resurrect the project? The trend on WP has been moving away from tolerance of disruptive and uncooperative editing, so even if the old warring comes back, we're in a better position to deal with it administratively if need be. – ClockworkSoul 22:51, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be a great idea. There is a clean up page - Wikipedia:WikiProject Beer/Cleanup listing - which I dive into now and again. Be good to get some of that dealt with. SilkTork *YES! 23:04, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Igor[edit]

Hello. The Igor tool looks very useful, however, I've found that it's broken. I downloaded the .jar file, but I can't login. Is there a version that works?  ono  15:12, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ClockworkSoul,

This is Andrew Gradman, editing from an IP because I've been using WikiBreak Enforcer to try to squeeze out a little scholastic productivity. Sadly, I'm back because I learned that I am currently the subject of a sockpuppetry investigation, over at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/JD Caselaw.

There's no question that I own both accounts, nor are people questioning that I use JD_Caselaw account for the legitimate purpose of making edits that are not associated with my real-life name. However, the investigators rightly point out an occasion when I really did use the JD_Caselaw account to engage in sockpuppetry. It was in May 2009, during my first month on Wikipedia. My response is that it was a long time ago and it was a mistake. And that's where the question stands: Given that I behaved really scurrilously, once a long time ago, can I be trusted now?

Since we've worked together in the past, I'm letting you know all this because I figure you might have some relevant insight into that question. Actually, you gave me a barnstar, which I now keep on my userpage. Perhaps that will refresh your memory!  :)

Your userpage is awesome--may I borrow some code?[edit]

Just dropping by to say that your userpage is awesome. I'm in the process of cleaning up mine--it's a bit cluttered--and I was wondering if you would be fine with me borrowing some of the code from yours? Just let me know if it's a problem! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 21:59, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! If you want to look at it, my work-in progress is at User:Cymru.lass/Redesign. Thanks again --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 07:12, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4[edit]

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.
