Introduction[edit]

Hello, I am a psych major, senior at the University of California Santa Cruz studying different aspects of intent community participation in Indigenous communities of the Americas. More specifically, I am looking into how Indigenous Mayan communities use nonverbal communication to teach children of their community how to take part in adult activities. What I've found through researching is that children of Indigenous communities of the Americas intently observe and listen in on adult activities. As a result, when children try to take on adult activities for themselves the first time they do not need verbal communication in the form of directions from adults. In fact, due to their running knowledge they can learn how to do the adult activity by trying it themselves through direct participation in it. In learning how to do to the adult activity this way, the only additional guidance children need to participate can be given through nonverbal communication in the form of gestures, gaze and touch.
