Welcome![edit]

Hello, Coffeestudy7, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Courtesy pings to Ian (Wiki Ed) and She who supplants - I have concerns about student editors selecting subjects of this nature, where WP:CTOP and WP:MEDRS requirements are in place. I have no authority to prohibit it, but I would strongly urge another topic unless you are confident that the student and their supervisor have read and understand those guidelines. Best wishes. Thanks Girth Summit. I agree - editing a topic like this might be ok for a medical class, but it's likely to be a challenge for a student in a writing class.
Coffeestudy7, I strongly advise you to pick a different topic to work on. Please get in touch with me (ian@wikiedu.org) if you need some clarification as to the problems here, or you need some help picking a different topic. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:09, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for changing the assignment details, Coffeestudy7, that is appreciated. Sorry if this was a bit of a rough start to your Wikipedia-editing experience; I wasn't trying to be unpleasant, we just get a lot of disruption at articles like that one from people who have a particular point of view to push, and who don't understanding our sourcing requirements, which makes it a bit of a minefield for new editors to navigate. I'm sure your tutor will work with you to find a more suitable topic; I'd be happy to help you myself if you'd like some suggestions. Feel free to swing by my talk page (User talk:Girth Summit) any time if you want any help or advice. Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 18:47, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
