I would agree with you. Logainm.ie, an authoritative source, gives Cromghlinn, of course, and this would have been the name used by the last native speakers in that area or a little south of it (Clonduff, Hilltown, etc.). Such speakers could still be easily found in the 1890s, and some as late as the 1940s (E.E. Evans, Mourne Country, 1951, R.L. Praeger, The Way that I Went, 1937). The other user does appear to imagine that the imposition of a new name means the creation of a new place. This may to a certain extent be true in cultural-historical terms (it is what colonisers do), but to Irish speakers it would essentially be the same landscape. In the rest of Ireland the name you gave to a place would depend on the language you were speaking at the time (An Cheathrú Rua/Carraroe). The other user would need to mount a very cogent argument. I shall add a note to this effect to the talk page for the article.

Margaret Magennis, Viscountess Iveagh

Dear Colin Ryan. I am a foreigner living in Ireland. I saw your recent edit on the article Margaret Magennis, Viscountess Iveagh where you added (Irish: Maighréad Nic Aonghusa) after Margaret Magennis in the lede. I do not know when Irish names are needed in the English Wikipedia. Living 1673–1744, Mrs Magennis probably spoke Irish. I wonder what she would have answered when asked for her name by somebody addressing her in English. Telling me that her Irish name is Maighréad Nic Aonghusa puts me into the difficulty of trying to pronounce it. The English Wikipedia usually gives a pronunciation help in biographies of speakers of foreign languages (e.g. Charles de Gaulle). Needing to guess wildly, I would pronounce [maː'gred nɪk'anəsa], but I might be quite wrong. With many thanks Johannes Schade (talk) 12:00, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

I think it highly likely that she spoke Irish, being raised in South Tipperary in the late 17th century. My version of a phonetic transcription would be [ˈmairʲe:d nikʲ ˈi:Nusə], though according to Gaelic custom she would always have kept her maiden name of Burke or de Búrca ([dʲə bu:rkə]. Margaret Magennis, Viscountess Iveagh revisited

Dear Colin Ryan. Sorry to bother you again. This still concerns your addition of an Irish name to the lead of the article Margaret Magennis, Viscountess Iveagh. It seems that adding Irish names in addition to English names in the leads of biographical articles is considered original research (WP:OR), unless the existence or use of such a name can be substantiated by a corresponding citation. I have learned this "rule" recently from User:Mabuska, an eminent Irish wikipedian and a speaker of the language, at the occasion of an edit I made on the article Charles MacCarty, Viscount Muskerry (1633/4–1665). This article included "(Irish: Cathal Mac Cárthaigh)" after the English name, but citations from Carte and Firth showed that his Irish name, since he really had one, was Cormac. Mabuska therefore removed Cathal and introduced Cormac. This case illustrates the danger of adding equivalent modern Irish names for historical persons, which of course is usually done by well-intended people who believe they make a valuable contribution. Could you please add a citation that would show that Margaret Magennis really was called Maighréad Nic Aonghusa, or if not, can you please remove the Irish name until such a citation can be found. I did not know this at the time of our previous discussion and am sorry to have wasted your time by asking to add an IPA pronunciation. User:Mabuska may have a point, and (of course) we always learn from our mistakes. A further point: given the historically complicated linguistic history of Ireland, if it can be demonstrated that a particular person lived at a time and in an area where Irish was absolutely the dominant language (and modern research makes this possible), one could make a good case for including nomenclature in Irish.
