192.223.243.6[edit]

I saw your edit to the admin intervention against vandalism page saying that 192.223.243.6 has already been blocked. I am still fairly new to WP and was just wondering how this person has been able to continue vadalizing pages if they have been blocked? Stoneice02 19:42, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that info, as well as the info on the New Discussion tab. Never noticed that there before. Stoneice02 20:10, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vector flags[edit]

Hello Conscious. Just dropping a line to compliment you on the work you did on the above. Would it be possible to get you to add some similar stuff to other Irish articles, especially those on Irish kings and kingdoms? They are badly wanted. Fergananim 12:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ulster Flag[edit]

I note you have made a new version of the Flag of Ulster. This is now incorrect - the old gif version was correct, but has now been deleted. If you compare the hands on the old gif version and your version you will see that the new one is completely different with an open thumb. You cannot take the hand from the Flag of Northern Ireland because it is a different hand! On the NI flag the thumb is open - on the yellow Ulster flag the thumb is closed! Jonto 18:30, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent fix! Maybe you could also make the tone of red on the cross and the hand the same? Keep up the good work. Jonto 15:58, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A gentle reminder[edit]

Hello! I hope you are feeling fine. I would like to make a humble request. In the future, if you delete any of my images which I have created, please inform me about the deletion and the reasons behind it. For example, the deletion regarding File:793px-Singapore old MRT map.png. If I know the reasons for this deletion, I would become a better editor and an uploader in the future. Thank you for your kind understanding regarding this. --Siva1979Talk to me 04:13, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Renaming[edit]

Hi Conscious, a couple of my images got moved to Wiki Commons and renamed. One was renamed with personal information in the file name, which I am attempting to delete and reverse.

Not sure if you know how this happens, but I see you fixed up some of the links. Not sure if you know how I can prevent this happening?

--Zarni02 09:18, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice (to upload to commons). So far I have been ignoring Commons and just using Wikipedia. So I think i'll take your advice. - Thanks --Zarni02 10:15, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Russian Superleague[edit]

Hi Conscious,

I looks sad to see that the Russian Superleague is the only professional league in the world of rugby without articles. I'm ready to do it but lacking English-speaking sources, and I don't speak Russian. I imagine that the rugby.ru is a complete sources. Stasm 15:03 3 September 2006 (UTC)

CAT:NC[edit]

Hi Conscious, I noticed that this category is backlogged and that you were working on this, and wanted to drop by and express some gratitude. I was deleting and removing templates to help clear it when I got stopped here User_talk:DVD_R_W#Removal_of_NowCommons_template. Any advice on what to do? Regards, DVD+ R/W 21:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for commenting. I recently got more involved with images due to a backlog notice at many categories at the administrator's noticeboard. I usually just do RC Patrol. I've noticed though that if I get more involved with images here I should get more involved with them at the Commons. I started an account there a while ago but since, I haven't done much. Any suggestions on things to do there? DVD+ R/W 20:36, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Republic of Vietnam Flag[edit]

Please stop reverting images of the Flag of the Republic of Vietnam in that page and in the South Vietnam page. While I understand Wikipedia prefers SVG to PNG, the PNG image displays the correct rendition of the flag of the Republic of Vietnam. If you're not clear about the format, look up the entry, or talk to the image uploader first. Brightc 23:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion reason[edit]

Please let me know if this was deleted because it's a copyvio, rather than because it's on Commons. If the former, then I will delete it there too. thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:53, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so either, but you'll notice your deletion reason was rather less-than-illuminating. :P --pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA[edit]

Thank you, Conscious, for voting on my RFA, which passed 95 to 1. Now that I have the mop, I hope I can live up to the standard, and be a good administrator. That means if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. —this is messedrocker (talk) 08:58, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I saw you made this edit. While it's true it's a "different" image on Commons, it essentially shows the exact same thing - no change in strength, time, or anything. Same satellite, too. The only difference here is the source of the image and the lat/lon grid. I'm not comfortable with IFDing images (when I was admin I only handled CSD images); I think it fits CSD I1 as "Redundant". – Chacor 09:17, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. Thanks anyway, I'll do the needful. Cheers. – Chacor 09:23, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tag issue[edit]

Please re-read the text first.

"This image is released as a public photo by sponsors to showcase the new colors and uniform of professional cycling team CEI of Spain. This photo of the top (jersey) is also used to showcase as a purchasable item."

I have given a link to it months ago in the team's talk thread when I placed it on Wikipedia and it was deleted. Do not bother me with deletion issues. If you want it gone because you do not know what happened then go ahead. I no longer have the link to the website because the shirt is no longer available for purchase. It was released as commercial use to showcase the team's uniforms for customers and fans to use and display as they wish. This has happened many times with the poor administration here and I do not wish to be bothered again.

Thank you. Kal 22:26, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I owe you an apology[edit]

I notice that you reverted an edit on Reference desk/Mathematics a little while ago. That was rather reasonable! I thought I had done a minor typo edit (correcting 'faild' to 'failed'), but for some reason, it seems that I also had deleted a large chunk of your text. I apologise profoundly; and I really don't know how this could have happened.

Except... Could this be an effect of you and me editing the text simultaneously? (Since the edit was extremely small, I didn't 'preview'. I'll do that in future edits - every time.) JoergenB 15:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer - and your good advice! I breafed through some pages, among others Help:edit conflict, before I started editing some weeks ago; but I reread it more carefully now, and I'm fairly sure this is what happened. I remember that at one 'save' recently the screen didn't look as I expected it; and after a while I just tried a new 'save'. I now realise that with a rather high probability I got an 'edit conflict screen', but didn't understand that that is what happened.

Now, when I better understand what to look for, I should not do the same mistake again. (However, perhaps there could be some even more explicit warning to the editor that (s)he is in an edit conflict; possibly as a default option, which an experienced editor could turn off?) Cities and towns[edit]

I don't mean to brag or anything, but you are very unlikely to find errors in articles of the "administrative divisions of..." series. They are pretty damn up-to-date and accurate. If you see an error, let me know—I'll tell you why it's not :) And, oh, thanks for working on the cities/towns list! Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:26, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious—do you have a particular reason here for constructs such as [[Kosteryovo|Kosterevo]] and [[Moscow|Moskva]]? Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:04, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peterhof is another one, Tolyatti is sometimes rendered as "Togliatti" (I'd rather not), and there are probably a few others which I don't remember off the top of my head. The "mysterious" classification is in fact OKATO, and I should probably spell it out in Russian as well, because it is not available in English anyway. I used it extensively to compile the "administrative divisions of..." series, so, as far as cities/towns go, you won't find anything new there that's not already in the series. It is indeed extremely useful to locate urban-type and rural settlements, although the list only lists rural settlements which are administrative centers of selsoviets (effectively omitting ~75% of all rural settlements). The document is available online, but if you want, I can email you the Word document which, in addition to what's available online, highlights all the errors and inconsistencies I've been able to find while working with it, and actually spells out what changes were done in its 102 revisions (it's missing the break-down of revisions 43 through 69, which I am still working on, but otherwise it's complete). The layout is far from ideal and is a pain in the ass to work with, but it's the most comprehensive publically accessible document there is. The next best thing would be to collect regional registries, but none of them is available online, let alone with updates.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:31, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The "administrative divisions" series is current as of the most recent OKATO update, so it includes all changes made since the Census. The lists of cities/towns in the series are also as complete as they can get. I think the series is a lot easier to work with than the original document, because whatever markup I added to OKATO to ease my work would unlikely be useful for what you are trying to do. If you still want that document, just shoot me an email (I'll need to know your email in order to be able to send the attachment; wikimail does not provide the attachments feature). Also, check out this.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 21:31, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Progress is a fairly recent promotion. See here (12/22/5).—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:27, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not convinced, I can't see it from your link. Moreover, this official information from 1.01.2006 and this two-week-old news suggest Progress is still a settlement. Conscious 17:58, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, interesting. It looks like you might have just found an error in OKATO that I missed. After re-checking my facts and sources, I see that OKATO Amendment #101 added Progress to the list of towns; however, the same amendment added line 10 465 550, which lists urban-type settlements under jurisdiction of the work settlement of Progress (emphasis is mine). At the same time, Progress was assigned OKATO code of 10 465, which is consistent with the cities/towns coding scheme.
On the other hand, don't put too much trust into what news and announcements say. A quick Yandex search for "Дальнегорский район"[1] will give you 28K+ links, many of which are recent, despite the fact that the district was abolished in 1997.
My recommendation would be to wait for the next OKATO update, which is due out any day now. Usually they fix the most blatant mistakes they themselves introduce in recent updates fairly quickly; let's hope they'll fix this one quickly too. We can remove Progress from the list of towns for now, but I'd leave it in administrative divisions of Amur Oblast because the reference used there supports what the list says, and I don't have enough information about the nature of this mistake to make changes and supply a footnote.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:56, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I figured you'd be the most likely to be able to answer this - FC Moskva says "Journalists used to call FC Moskva The Citizens (Russian: Горожане) by analogy with Manchester City F.C." It seems unlikely that my favourite team would hold much influence over Moscow journalists. Is there a Manchester connection, or is it a poorly worded way of saying that the two clubs coincidentally share a nickname? Oldelpaso 19:34, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I did not create any sybcategory creater template. I do it by copy-pasting text from the previous existing category manually. If you want to create, then please go ahead. I do not know fom which category you are deleting the images available on commons. I saw one of the images deleted by you was taaged now commons on December 29. Please consider deleting the images first which have nowcommons tag for long time. The images have a backlog requiring very hard-work. Shyam (T/C) 17:25, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I had seen it in the category list. Very great show in cleaning up the category. But I want to remind you that the this category has more attention towards all points. Is the image has been tagged properly on the commons image. If the image has been tagged as {{PD-self}}, {{GFDL-self}} or claiming self creation, then do not forget to mention original upload log. For this you can use this tool, if you are not using. Keep up the good work. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 11:07, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jennie Jerome image[edit]

Hello. I see you removed the link to an image of Jennie Jerome on the grounds that it is "blacklisted". For my own education, what does that mean? Thanks in advance, Charivari 02:41, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Much obliged for the information about the spam blacklist. My first impression is that the technique is a very blunt instrument indeed, potentially blocking much useful information. However, it may be necessary in order to limit the amount of spam added to Wikipedia. I just hope a better solution can be found eventually. Thanks again. Charivari 01:02, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your reply. The page Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#For_image_creators says "Ideally, we would like you to choose an open content license...", its an ideal, not a compulsion. Kris (talk) 12:25, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Then yes, I was mistaken: it needs to be reverted to the earliest non-copyvio/etc version- but (speaking still as a volunteer and admin; I am not a paid member of the foundation etc.) in the interest of not having the foundation sued out of the water one of these days, not in this case but in another, it's good to be somewhat cautious in these cases. I do notice that nothing happened a month after the article was placed on AfD; all's probably well enough *tolls that bell.* Schissel | Sound the Note! 18:33, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't that source presently. However, compare these two sentences:

He served the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in the Pacific (1942-1946), and then returned to Armco. He progressed from handling personnel, to director of organizational planning and development (1957), to director of public relations (1961), to vice president and general manager of steel (1964), to executive vice president of Armco (1965), and finally to chairman of Armco's board (1971).

The above from [2] (which predates Wikipedia, and I believe is also a portion of a book in print), and the corresponding text from Wikipedia:

For a period of about four years (1942-1946), much of it during World War II, Verity served in the Pacific as a U.S. Navy lieutenant. Afterwards, he returned to Armco and advanced from handling personnel to director of organizational planning and development in 1957, to director of public relations in 1961, to vice president and general manager of steel in 1964, to executive vice president of Armco in 1965, and finally to chairman of Armco's board in 1971.

These are clearly so similar that Wikipedia is violating someone's copyright, even if we are not sure who. The phrasing and the cadence are identical. This kind of "light rewrite" would get a published book withdrawn from store shelves. I think other portions of the article may be suspect as well. Quatloo 19:26, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image licences[edit]

Instead of giving me the in's and out's on how image tagging works you come to me with a bully like message and warn me? is this normal? are you here to chase away new members who want to contribute on wikipedia or are you here to help them figure out how everything works? and you can't just delete all my images many of them are mine so be carefull before just randomly pick one without telling me about it, just like the images that were deleted without me knowing it,nobody notified me on my talk page about them being nominated for deletion and therefore i was never given the chance to correct them, you accuse me of using false licenses intentionally well that's simply not true it had more to do with the fact that as a newbie i was still figuring everything out RoboRanks 11:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
