Jeopardy! Theme Music[edit]

Since Jeopardy! debuted in 1964, the series has had many different theme music versions, most of them composed by show creator Merv Griffin.

"Think!"[edit]

"Think!", originally composed by Merv Griffin as "A Time for Tony"[1] as a lullaby for his son Tony,[a] has served as the Final Jeopardy! round countdown music since the show's debut in 1964.[b]

In America, "Think!" has insinuated itself into everyday communication; the theme has been used to score situations in which someone is waiting for another to answer a question or make a decision. "Think!" is often used at baseball stadiums when the manager goes out to the pitcher's mound to discuss a replacement, or during instant replay reviews, or at short-track races when officials are trying to ascertain the cause of an accident which may result in a penalty. On numerous shows, including The Jerry Springer Show and Boston Legal, the theme (or some variation thereof) is heard when a choice has to be made or a result is being awaited. Merv Griffin estimated that the Jeopardy! theme earned him royalties of over $70 million.[2] During the GSN Game Show Awards, "Think!" was awarded best game show theme.

Musical structure[edit]

The 1984 and 1997 recordings of "Think!" are set at 132 beats per minute. Its introduction begins in C major and then modulates a minor third upward to E-flat major. The main melody is first performed in F major, then upward to A-flat major and B major, downward to D major, with the F major and A-flat major portions repeated after that.[3] With the 1997 and 2001 arrangements of the main theme, the F-major, A-flat major, and B-major sections are repeated.

Art Fleming era[edit]

1964-1975[edit]

A jazz number titled "Take Ten", composed by Julann Griffin, served as the main theme to the original NBC/syndicated versions.

On the 2,000th episode in 1972, the theme music was the overture to The Who's Tommy. At the end of the final episode of the original NBC version in 1975, Fleming walked off the set to the tune of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile". As the song played, a shot of the darkened set was seen with the credits rolling, and instead of applause, the audience just heard the song.

1978-1979[edit]

The main theme to the NBC revival, called "Frisco Disco", was composed by Merv Griffin and arranged by Mort Lindsey, the bandleader on The Merv Griffin Show.[c] The opening theme, called "January, February, March", was also composed by Griffin and arranged by Lindsey, and reappeared as the main theme on the first pilot of the Alex Trebek-hosted Jeopardy! in 1983.

Both "Frisco Disco" and "January, February, March" were recorded in 1976 and released on Merv Griffin's double album As Time Goes By, two years prior to the revival of Jeopardy! in 1978. They eventually carried over to the syndicated version of Wheel of Fortune in 1983.

Alex Trebek era[edit]

Starting with the Alex Trebek-hosted version in 1984, the show used a rendition of "Think!" performed on synthesizer and saxophone as its main theme, with the original Final Jeopardy! theme retained for that segment. At the top of the show a "swooshing" laser sound effect was in use. Midway into the 1988-1989 season, the theme's introduction was shortened to the latter half. The main theme was remixed for Season 9 to include a bongo track; this remix was used for tournament play during season 8 before being put into permanent use from the start of 1992-93 season until the end of Season 13. When the 1996-2002 "Sushi Bar" set was put into use shortly after the start of Season 13, the main theme's introduction was shortened again, and the "swooshing" sound was eliminated altogether.

At the beginning of Season 14 in the fall of 1997, a brand new rendition of main theme and "Think!" music was created for the show by Steve Kaplan, involving a more piano-driven, jazzy, orchestral sound. The "Think!" music from that package initially had only a piano lead, but in mid-September 1997, Jeopardy! switched to another track from the same package of "Think!" with a piano lead in the first verse and a trumpet lead in the second verse. As with the 1984 theme and 1992 "bongo" theme, the 1997 arrangement of the main theme had its introduction cut to just the latter half at the start of Season 17 in the fall of 2000 but with a wind blowing sound effect at the top of the show. The 1997 arrangement remained in use until April 20, 2001 (see paragraph below).

During the Celebrity Jeopardy! and International Tournament episodes in Las Vegas, Nevada in February 2001, an updated version of the 1997 main theme, also arranged by Steve Kaplan, was created for the show. This new arrangement was at a faster tempo, its introduction was slightly altered, and it included a middle section consisting of electric guitar and saxophone improvs before the main sections are repeated. A remix of the sped-up 1997 theme with a completely different introduction (except for the five notes leading into the theme) than the February 2001 and 1997 arrangements debuted with the April 23, 2001 episode and had since become the main theme for all Jeopardy! programming, including regular play, tournaments, and celebrity editions. The February 2001 version was used for most Jeopardy! tournaments taped outside the Sony Pictures studio, such as university campuses, theaters, and hotels. At least two tournaments taped outside the Sony Pictures studio used the April 23, 2001 version, the Million Dollar Masters Tournament at Radio City Music Hall in 2002 and the 2001 Jeopardy! College Championship at Pauley Pavilion at UCLA. The February 2001 version was also used in the Celebrity Jeopardy! episodes at Radio City Music Hall in November 2006, but the Rock and Roll Jeopardy! theme played going into and out of commercial breaks. Shortly after the start of Season 18, the "swooshing" sound effect returned to the top of the show's theme and remained there until after Season 24. The February 2001 version became the main theme for all Jeopardy! programming at the beginning of Season 25, with its introduction shortened to the latter half; it remained there until the end of Season 26. Only the April 23, 2001 version was recently released through YouTube.

An all-new arrangement of both the main theme and "Think!" music, which have since become more piano-driven, was created for the show at the beginning of Season 27 by Chris Bell Music. The main theme consists of a piano, strings, and guitar introduction, the main melody played on violins, piano and electric guitars, a section of electric guitar and saxophone improvs, the main melody returning, another section of saxophone and electric guitar improvs, and the main melody returns a final time to finish the piece. By mid-October 2010, Jeopardy! began using a different track from the same package of the "Think!" music with a piano lead. This theme was recently released through YouTube.

Other versions[edit]

Rock & Roll Jeopardy! used an electric guitar-based rendition of "Think!" The music has since been used on the parent show leading to and coming out of commercial breaks during College Championships, Teen Tournaments, recent Kids Weeks, and recent celebrity episodes, starting in Season 21. During a few of these tournaments, it was also played during Final Jeopardy! The full Rock & Roll Jeopardy! theme is played during the end credits in all Kids Week, Teen Tournament, and College Championship episodes starting in Season 26. In Season 24 it was played during the full end credits in three episodes of the 2008-A Teen Tournament, with the fourth episode using the 2001 theme during the full end credits. In Season 25 it was played during the end credits in most of the 2008-B Teen Tournament, with at least one episode using the 2001 theme.

Jep! used a different rendition of "Think!" for its main theme, similar to that of the Rock & Roll version. So far, it has never been used on the regular show.

Alternate music[edit]

Alternate versions of "Think!" were a college-style version performed by the UCLA Marching Band during the 2001 College Championship, another college-style version played by the Yale Whiffenpoofs during the 2003 College Championship, and a baseball-style version played by organist Trent Johnson during the final Celebrity Jeopardy! show at Radio City Music Hall in 2006. Five different piano renditions were used during the show's first trip to New York City in 1999. On an episode aired in May 2007, a pipe organ player aboard the Orient Express played a piano version of the "Think!" music.

On at least one occasion, the "Think!" theme was not played at all during Final Jeopardy! Before, during, and after Alex Trebek's reading of the Final Jeopardy! clue for Episode #3985, the L.A. Spirit Chorale sang a live, a cappella rendition of "Silent Night", with Clue Crew member Cheryl Farrell on lead vocals.

Wheel of Fortune set history[edit]

"Set history" articles aren't going to fly. Jeopardy! set evolution was deleted and salted because it was entirely original research. And things like changing the score displays from eggcrates to digital readouts are never acknowledged on-air, so even citing the individual episodes of the changes would still be original research.
