Thanks for making your photo(s) available. I assume you (also) live in Christchurch and it's thus appropriate for me to say hello. Saying that you are a pretty decent photographer would be an understatement. It would be good if you wanted to contribute more photos. If you have them on Flickr with the right licence, it's very simple for me to transfer them across to Wikimedia Commons, where media files for Wikipedia are held. If you want to contribute, you could have a category for your photos, like I have one for myself. Or you could directly upload to Commons. I can help with anything; just let me know (here's good; have added your page to my watchlist). I've linked your photo to your user account; please let me know if you'd like to have anything amended. That's correct, I'm in Christchurch. Thank you for the compliment! In general I'm a fan of Creative Commons... I upgraded my camera kit last year and use it in my business; I switched my default license on Flickr over to All Rights Reserved so I could figure out whether I was going to get anywhere monetising them. What I guess I don't have a good feel for yet is what photos are worth contributing to Commons (nor how to get started uploading, though I presume it's pretty straightforward from Flickr). Is there a guide somewhere you can point me towards? Thanks! - crazyscot 08:22, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

It's pretty straightforward for me to transfer photos from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons, as the Upload Wizard takes care of most things, but that option won't be available to you (you need to have license reviewer status before you have access to it). Your method of choice would be to upload photos from your computer's hard drive using the Upload Wizard. It's reasonably simple when you are uploading your own photos; the hardest part is figuring out the licence status when you are dealing with somebody else's work. You could just follow your nose, or have a look at a tutorial first. I suggest you upload a few things and then draw my attention to it, and I'll look at it then. You may struggle with the categorisation system, but it's easier if I give you a hand if and when the need arises than explain something now that might be totally obvious to you anyway.

If you've got loads of photos on Flickr that you'd be keen to get across, maybe it's easiest if you send me a list of the Flickr URLs by email; see the "Email this user" link in the sidebar on the left (under "Tools"). I'll get them over to Wikimedia Commons, and you can then add appropriate descriptions and do the categorisation. How does that sound? Schwede66 18:04, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
