Hammering spam blacklist with url shorteners[edit]

Please stop attempting to use bit.ly or any other url shorteners; we do not permit links to these as they are frequently used to cirumvent other spam blacklistings. OhNoitsJamie Talk 14:56, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know. Is there a specific page that you saw this on? CuriousKurti (talk) 15:48, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have over 200 hits in our spam blacklist log. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:55, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll take a look at the log page and see if I can track it down. I've only added about 10 links to my own project but I have about 30 students working on different pages so maybe I'm getting hits connected to their efforts. Again, thanks for the heads-up. I agree that we should be using the full URLs and not short ones so I appreciate this notification. CuriousKurti (talk) 16:32, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just figured it out. It's not 200 different links. It's a short link for a google presentation that I put on the WikiEdu homepage as a resource for students. When I scan the log file, there are hundreds of listings but all for the same link on the same page. I wonder if it gets flagged everytime someone loads the home page? In any case, I'll get rid of it and replace with the direct Google slide link and that should stop the flagging. Thanks for helping me track this down :) CuriousKurti (talk) 16:37, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It gets flagged every time an attempt is made to save a page containing a blacklisted link. If a blacklisted link already exists on the page before it is blacklisted, the page will get filter errors every time someone tries to save it until the blacklisted link is removed. That makes total sense. I guess I've made a few edits lol. The full link is there now so that foolishness should be done with! CuriousKurti (talk) 16:46, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for sorting that out! OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:40, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
