Flores brothers insertion into Texas Revolution articles

Hi DLS Texas. I've noticed that you've been inserting mention of the Flores brothers into all sorts of Texas Revolution articles. You've probably noticed that I've been removing these mentions as soon as I see them. Wikipedia articles need to be built based on information found in reliable sources. Scholarly works are considered the most reliable sources. I've done a great deal of reading on the Texas Revolution, and none of the sources mention the Flores brothers. While you can probably find a few sources that do mention them in some way, including them in these articles gives undue weight to them considering that the scholarly sources don't ever mention them when giving an overview of the battles, the revolution in general, or Mexican Texas. Sorry, stumbled across this on another errand, and maybe got my dander up a bit; but the above "none of the sources mention the Flores brothers" was not only an unnecessary remark but suggests lack of good sources. I quite honestly grabbed the books closest to me and each one mentioned the Flores brothers. The sister was Juan Seguin's wife, Salvador was Captain of a cavalry unit and a town named after another one of the brothers-- mentioned in Sequin's A Revolution Remembered, Moore's Eighteen Minutes and Savage Frontier, Jenkins' Recollections of Early Texas, and Smithwick's, The Evolution of a State-- need I go to my shelf and grab more?. Maybe not enough for inclusion, but that family is hardly "unmentioned."

Also, please note that in Texas History, there has been an historical prejudice to mention the wealthy and well-educated and neglect the common folk who played every bit as large, as important, and as heroic a role; and in even in the accounts from such persons, there is a tendency to "name-drop" in their memoirs (e.g., Smithwick). The neglect of Texas heroes with Hispanic surnames is rather a notorious practice. Wikipedia has no page limit, and so opening to valid historic entires, long neglected, seems a fine purpose-- and I'm Scotch-Irish! I would expect to see at least one article on that family in the Handbook of Texas Online.

Runaway Scrape

I noted your addition of General Vicente Filisola as leading the largest group at San Felipe during the Runaway Scrape on the Texas Revolution article. Santa Anna and Sesma were leading the armies there. I will need to look it up, but I do not believe that Filisola commanded a division at the time, serving instead on Santa Anna's staff. Filisola, however, led the entire Mexican forces in its own retreat after San Jacinto. Urrea was at Matagorda with 1200 men: Gaona was somewhere between Bastrop and San Felipe, with 725; Sesma, at Fort Bend, with about 1,000, and Vicente Filisola between San Felipe and Fort Bend, with nearly 1800 men."

"Filisola and the main Mexican Army camped at Thompson’s Ferry with 1,408 men. Urrea with 1,165 men left Mrs. Powell’s home at 4 a.m. (April 20) and arrived at Columbia at 4 p.m., which was deserted. He then marched to its port (La Puerta) two miles distance."

"He knew Filisola had approximately 2,500 troops near Old Fort and Santa Anna took the road back to Filisola by way of Harrisburg. His cavalry followed. Without effective leaders the Mexican infantry broke and ran. The Texians crossed the Mexican breastworks in about 18 minutes as the leaderless infantry scattered."

Yes, I see how you came to that conclusion. However...

The central vanguard at San Felipe was made up the Brigade under Cos and the Brigade under Sesma, the two together making a Division and that division was led by Santa Anna when Gaona was ordered southeast to meet them and as Gaona did so (painfully slowly by Mexican point of view!). "the main forces of Filisola at San Felipe" is therefore, anachronistic.

The original text took this all into consideration and was worded accordingly.

Okay, I see what you mean, it really doesn't fit there. Santa Anna was in San Felipe and Filisola was not. I would still like to see a line in about Filisola.

As Santa Anna sped forward, General Filisola would follow with the rear guard, transporting artillery, supplies, and livestock. Santa Anna, ahead of the main forces, would issue orders to Filisola, who would in turn would issue orders to the Generals (in charge of their own forces), thus making it possible for Santa Anna's orders to be carried out.

So in a sense Filisola was in charge of the main forces....right???

Field orders issued April 8 from SA at San Felipe appear to place Filisola in control of the army. Upon reaching the Brazos and in the absence of the supreme commander, now rushing to Harrisburg, Filisola was placed in command of the remaining forces....with these orders: they were supposed to converge at the Brazos, with orders to cross, find, take 500 men and attack and defeat the Texian army and then rendezvous with Santa Anna at Harrisburg. Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers

Hi DLS! I saw that you created Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers recently. There used to be an article for Immortal 32 that's now been redirected to Battle of the Alamo. I think this one needs to be a redirect as well. The company isn't really notable, in my opinion. There isn't that much about the company that isn't in the article (or in Siege of the Alamo). The biggest omission is the list of names, and most of the people on it don't meet inclusion criteria on their own. I'd like to redirect this article. Karanacs (talk) 16:08, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Ráfael Vásquez

I'd like to propose a move on this page, but wanted to run it past you first. As far as I can tell, the only thing that distinguishes this from the Peruvian politician Rafael Vásquez is a little accent mark on the first name. And there's Rafael Vásquez (baseball). It can get very confusing in the Search box. I'd like to propose moving the Peruvian politician to Rafael Vásquez (Peruvian politician), and the one you created to Ráfael Vásquez (Mexican Army general). And then a disambiguation page to include all of them. Please let me know how you feel about this. The person who created the Peruvian politican page has been inactive for years. Mathew Caldwell

Hi there. I added an infobox and some minor verbiage in the lead. This is the third person I've found who was (according to the Handbook of Texas) called the Paul Revere of Texas. It's a big state - they needed more than one. A word to the wise on this article. You picked a tough one. I'm not sure how you found this person, but I don't immediately find anything other than what you have, so it's difficult for me to punch it up. And I don't know the details of why they don't consider this person notable. I do have some tips to give you on this, and any future articles:

• References. If you use the Edit Toolbar when you are in the Edit screen, there are templates that can be filled out for references. If you don't see an Edit Toolbar, go to Preferences, Editing, and check the box "Show Edit Toolbar". Then in the Edit screen, up at top you will see "Cite" . Click that, and over on the left you will then see "Templates". It will help you a lot to standardize and wikify your refrences.
• Notability - I do notice that the guidelines say "If you write an article that doesn't state, at the very beginning, why something is notable, you've significantly increased its roadkill potential." The lead section is supposed to be a synopsis of the rest of the article, something that immediately tells the reader why this subject is notable. That said, I think you need to find more information to fill the article, and punch up the lead section after you have done that.

Perhaps one clue of Notability is if you click on a red link Ludovic Colquhoun, and when it comes up and tells you that there is no such page (etc.), go ahead anyway to the left-hand side and click on "What links here". If there are already non-user links that indicate other pages that have red links to what you are trying to create, that's an indication someone else thought the subject notable enough to include it on a red link on what they created. In the case of Lucovic, there are no such pages.

If there are not at least three such non-user red links out there when you create the page, my experience has been that your new page will get slapped by a bot with an "Orphan" tag. I would suggest searching what you consider related pages to see if a reference to Ludovic should be inserted as a red link, and then do it yourself.

• Cite Find a Grave - Ludwig's grave is Here Find a Grave is a good thing to bookmark. And the template itself, is really a matter of putting it between the ref symbols, and inputing the appropriate information: Check this in your Edit screen to see how I did it. The number in there is the Find a Grave Memorial number found at the bottom of any person's page.
• Google Books A very good place to find information, and good for references.
• Categories: Don't put the colon ahead of the category inside the brackets. The colon is only once, inbetween the word Category, and the name of the category. Inputting the categories with Hot Cat gadgets - after you've created the article - would really help you. Preferences, Gadgets, Editing, check the "Hot Cat" selection. Look at any article, and the categories, if input correctly, should only appear in the category bar at the bottom of the page.

When you get this done, you can include the existing category for this one: Burials at San Antonio Cemetery No. 1

Gaona's Brigade from Bastrop to San Felipe

I made a change on the date of General Antonio Gaona's departure from Bastrop (Mina)-- from April 15 to April 5. I am well aware of the lack of specifics available to researchers, but three facts place the date at or near April 5. 1) Noah Smithwick's account of his time with Tumlinson' Rangers in Evolution of a State states that the Rangers witnessed Gaona's Brigade arrive at the Colorado, and then that company of Rangers immediately heads from Bastrop toward the Brazos, arriving on the outskirts of Washington on the Brazos on the night of the full moon, which was April 1st. So we know that Gaona arrived across from Bastrop/Mina on or about March 27. 2) Jose Urrea's Diary states that Gaona had been delayed (for nefarious reasons) in Bastrop for eight days, so we know that after at least one day to cross the river, the occupation lasted eight days, which takes us to approximately the 5th of April. 3) Santa Anna, departs San Felipe frustrated by Gaona's failure to appear, referring to Gaona's Brigade as "lost in the desert;" and Filisola remarks that Gaona arrived in San Felipe on April 17.

Given the weather and lack of available routes for a fully equipped Brigade, an eleven or twelve day march is about right-- whereas a two day march (the April 15 date) is impossible.

From a April 7 dispatch from Rusk and Houston to Major Williamson, we know that, out of Washington on the Brazos, Ranger scouts had captured at least two Mexican scouts on April 6, suggesting that Gaona's Brigade probably continued on the San Antonio Road to the Brazos and then picked its way down the right bank of the river toward San Felipe. Saffold Dam Marker

Saffold Dam is located on SH 123 on the south edge of Seguin, Texas with the northern edge bordering Max Starke Park. The dam was named for Civil War veteran William Saffold, whose father purchased the property here in the mid-1800s from San Jacinto veteran Manuel N. Flores. The Flores Falls were originally a natural rock outcropping, Saffold Dam was a mill dam, typical of the styles built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dam was first improved by Henry Troell in the late 1800s. Troell added rocks to heighten the dam, raising the water level in order to power a cotton gin. In 1907, the City of Seguin bought Troell's property to further develop the river's hydroelectricity, and later improvements led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam's south side. The plant is currently nonoperational and a restaurant complex is under development.

Roland Harper

I saw your edit[2] to his article here. For future reference, a person isn't put in both the category and subcategory for where they are from. For example, if you checked the category People from El Paso, Texas and its people category People from El Paso County, Texas, notable people aren't in both. So Harper only goes in the People from Seguin, Texas and I edited out the link to People from Guadalupe County, Texas....William 22:01, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions in the articles about Texas history! I wanted to ask you if you would want to publish some article of colonial governors of Texas (List of Colonial and Mexican Governors of Texas). I think all (or most) them should have articles in Wikipedia because they were governors of this place. So, I posted many of them because before there was almost no colonial governor of Texas who had articles on wikipedia and I am interested in this theme.
