It would be wrong to encourage you to shy away from issues you care strongly about. I refrain from frequently editing in some subject matters I know I am emotional about, but I occasionally contribute when my expertise overlaps with these subjects. Wikipedia doesn't have rules, per se, but one of the most important rules is that this ought to be fun or at least gratifying. If you derive gratification from engaging in challenging but civil dialogue that results in an improved article (as I think your AfD will result in), you are doing a good thing while having a good time. Please don't get discouraged by a mistake—I make them here all the time. I hope you stick around.
