Re: Created a New Article[edit]

You said: Hello. I created my first article yesterday. This Wikipedia article is an assignment for a class I am enrolled in. I was wondering if you could look it over and let me know what I can do to improve it, to meet Wiki standards. Thanks in advance for any help. Really appreciate it. The article is "Ken block (Rally Driver)." —Preceding unsigned comment added by DaveP25 (talk • contribs) 00:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Sure. I'll take a look a bit later tonight, after I get back from my seminar class. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 02:13, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • First, to answer your article talk page questions. (I also posted this info there.) To have multiple citations to the same link show up as one link, use a name='example' argument in your ref tag, like so "<ref name='kenblockingsite'>{{cite etc}}</ref>". I did that to two of your references for an example, which you can see here. Of course, use a different name for different references, since having the same name is what makes the reference links not duplicate. As for images, the owner has to be willing to release the image under the GFDL or another free license. They can email the wikimedia foundation with the permission by following the instructions at WP:CONSENT. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 05:30, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • All in all, I'd say that's a pretty good article. It's extremely well referenced, which is a major plus for an article. As for content, I would suggest some more biographical information, including more background. Talk about how his career evolved and perhaps provide a little info on who he is as a person or his personal life. Just make sure to cite your sources, since this is a biography of a living person which has a very high standard for cited sources, to avoid any libel problems from living people. I'd also pull off the stub tag (since the article isn't really a stub, but is actually a full sized article). You will want to put the article in the appropriate categories. See WP:CAT for help on that. I'd also not have multiple level sections with the same names, like ===2005===, ====Rally America results====, =====2005=====. Having the 2005 there twice makes it show up in the contents twice. Also, the fifth level subject header (the one with 5 equal signs) is pretty small, which doesn't look very good in the article. I'd consider replacing the 5th level section heads with just standard bold text, like this: ===2005===, ====Rally America results====, '''2005'''. Using the three single quote marks makes the text bold without making it a brand new section on the table of contents. Those are the largest things I can see that would improve the article. Of course, when you've got some time to sit down and go through it, I'd always recommend you take a look at the manual of style for our overall appearance guidelines. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 05:49, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The last thing I like to mention to new editors with well referenced and good new articles is our Did You Know project, WP:DYK. The project publicizes new articles by taking properly referenced factoids from them and posting them on the Main Page for six hours, in the "Did you Know..." box. Your article is a good one, and it's very well referenced, so once you get those citations formatted without the duplication (see my first note), I think it would be worth it to try a submission. Just come up with a fact that makes an interesting one-liner to submit. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 05:54, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You For The Tips[edit]

I will be working on the suggestions you made. Ive already completed a few for the page and I plan on working on the rest ASAP. Thanks again for all the help. Really appreciate it and keep up the great work helping others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DaveP25 (talkcontribs) 02:54, 5 November 2008
