I've made a minor correction on a Wiki page, but that section of the page now displays oddly (see http://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Meintjes). I'd like to make another minor correction, but now dunno... — Preceding unsigned comment added by David Desmond (talk • contribs)

Hello David. It appears that when you changed the spelling of the name, you also added a couple of hard returns (you pressed "enter" twice), and then you added an indentation. This is what caused the strange appearance, and I have fixed it. In the future, you can click the "preview" button while editing to see what your changes will do to a page. Also, when you are trying to discuss a matter on Wikipedia, please enter your comments or questions into the editing window, rather than the edit summary - it makes them easier to find. If you would like to receive help in Afrikaans, see af:Wikipedia:Hulp. Questions asked on the English Wikipedia will generally only receive an answer in English. However, what I had written was a review in response to Wikipedia's statement that This article is a Stub, and that you can help by expanding it'[or words to that effect]. Which is what I had done earlier this month (see below)…'

‘Lou’ is a 2010 Australian film starring John Hurt, Emily Barclay and Lily Bell Tindley. A bittersweet little movie, barely 80 minutes. It's about young mother Rhea (Barclay) without a partner, trying to raise her three girls in their ramshackle home while trying to survive on social security. Set in sugarcane country in northern NSW, their lives are upended when Doyle (Hurt); a former merchant seaman—now in the early stages of Alzheimer's, is thrust upon them with the promise of increased benefits.

Doyle's presence is an affront to the eldest girl Louise, convincingly portrayed by young Tindley. 'Lou', (described as 'precocious' by their social services worker), has to give up her own bedroom. The scatty, sixtyish man, so often irascible at the frustrations of trying to grapple with his mental decline, as common words start to elude him. Doyle's lucid moments—his vivid nostalgia of sailing through the islands of the south Pacific ('where the wind can be just a gentle caress')—strikes a chord with young Lou. As does his murmuring of the haunting Maori lament 'Pokarekare Ana'…

And in Doyle's scrambled head Lou is becoming transformed into the love of his life, Annie… Lou overcomes her initial revulsion and is bewitched by the woman's wedding ring, presented to her on bended knee by her 'grandfather'.

A bauble she soon flaunts, to the dismay of her young mum ('and I'm only twenty seven!') she sobs, and tells the social security woman that Doyle HAS to go. As Rhea sadly realises, the loss of their income supplement (Doyle), means that their only entertainment—a rented TV, is soon ripped from their home.

Their plight compounds as Rhea has a bust-up with her boyfriend—for reasons left unexplained; deaf to her pleas not to leave them…

Bleak scenarios. Yet brief moments of tenderness, as Lou recognises, with her 'precocious' maturity', that she now needs to comfort her unhappy mum. ````

Hello, I'm afraid what you're doing is not appropriate for Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so it's purpose is to give a basic, neutral overview on a notable topic. It is not the place to publish your personal reviews or essays (see WP:NOTESSAY). The current article on Lou (2010 film) is encyclopedic, while an original review on the topic is not. April 11, 2018: 'Today's featured picture'[edit]

I don't really want to 'talk' or 'chat' as such; but rather to question WHY this splendid painting by Monet is AGAIN featured? For this picture was featured on January 14, 2017… A masterpiece I particularly recall, having added it to my 'collection' of great paintings fifteen months ago. My proposed new entry on Wikipedia’s List of South African Women Artists[edit]

I’m drafting page/s for a new entry on Wikipedia’s List of South African Women Artists—titled Nerine Desmond [1908–1993].

Over November 2018 I emailed every art gallery and art museum in South Africa likely to have works by her in their collection.

A typical example I sent is shown below.

I am preparing a page on Nerine Desmond (my late mother) for inclusion in Wikipedia’s List of South African Women Artists.

So I’m contacting art museums such as yours, as to whether you have any artworks by Nerine.

If you do, I would be pleased to add Durban Art Gallery to my list.

I now have more than enough images to upload to Wikipedia Commons, including several which I’d like to include in that article.

Only one Gallery (JAG) requested that I complete a formal online Reproduction Application, which I submitted on 23/11/18.

I have bought two books: • Wikipedia: The Missing Manual, by John Broughton, published January 2008. • Sam’s Teach Yourself Wikipedia in 10 Minutes, by Michael Miller, published October 2009.

Page 97 of Sam’s notes that one should learn about Creative Commons licenses.

After much thought, I have made the suggested donation to Creative Commons on 02 February, and which they have acknowledged.

As at 05 February, I have received no response from Creative Commons to my comment 'I believe that anyone who wants to use any of those images, for whatever reason, should acknowledge the source of the image (i.e. the gallery/museum; or myself, where I am the owner of some of the images).' Nor to my question 'I'm hoping that Creative Commons can explain, in simple terms, what I need to do next!'

On 08 February I've been informed by Mari @ Creative Commons that 'When you upload images to Wikimedia Commons, you apply the license there, there's nothing to do on the CC site, it's all on Wikimedia Commons.'

So NOW, can some kind person @ Wikipedia Commons please advise me HOW I 'apply the license' when I upload images? Thank you…

If you go to Preferences -> Gadgets -> Browsing, you should be able to find a box to check that says "Suppress display of fundraiser banners". This only works when you're logged in and won't prevent the occasional email message from WMF telling you they appreciate your money.

If, on the other hand, you are really asking to have the monthly emails restored, I think you'd have to talk to the people at WMF about that. Wikipedia editors can't help with that sort of request on-wiki. — jmcgnh^{(talk) (contribs)} 05:00, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fund-Raising Banners[edit]

A year or two back, I was advised that to avoid seeing this exhortation to elicit donations from Wikipedia users, I could go to the Gadgets page, and check the ‘Suppress Fund Raising Banners’ box.

And this worked well until now; the first week of December 2020, when checking that box NO LONGER has any effect!

As I have a standing $6 per month donation to Wikipedia for several years now, I believe that IF Wikipedia can detect that I 'Use Wikipedia quite a lot', then surely it should ALSO be capable of finding that I am a regular donor!

I RESENT that I should have a 'guilt trip' UNFAIRLY laid upon me… ````

The donation system is controlled by the Foundation, not anyone here on Wikipedia, and the two systems do not communicate with each other directly.(I believe there are legal reasons against doing so, but I'm not certain).
