The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Library editathon March 7[edit]

It was great to see you too at the Wikisalon. Creating a WP event page sounds like a great idea -- I'm not quite sure how to do that. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? Probably you have seen Wikipedia:How to run an edit-a-thon. It addresses many questions that I don't understand, and briefly mentions the Event Page. For those other matters you can consult experts including @Pharos:, @Rhododendrites:, and @Wil540 art:. Notice that I used the Ping template. This alerts our fellow editors that I'm talking about (or to) them. Event Pages are written by the same method we use for biographies, galaxies, libraries or other stereotypical articles. We find a nice old Event Page, copy it, and replace the specifics of the old event with specifics of the new one. I shall copy the Event Page from Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/February 2023, the one for the monthly WMNYC meeting Wednesday evening. The name for the draft will be User:Dbiunno/Draft for History of Nursing in Newark. We can both edit it and when it's ready, we can move it (I will move it if you are not yet a Filemover) into a WMNYC pagename and make a link to it from the WMNYC list of events. All right; as usual I munged it a bit on the first try. No problem; every failure can be re-edited. Also I used Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/NYBG March2019 as the source because that's an edit-a-thon. Now I'll add some bits. Certainly it won't be ready when I leave for the afternoon; you should try to do something with it meanwhile. I figure the event page is pretty near ready. I've been a bit busy too; a couple hours from now I'll be at Lincoln Center tutoring a photo uploader. Anyway there's a series of tiny paragraphs that ought to be a bullet list. And now it's clear to me that this is almost entirely an insider event, which is fairly common when the venue is academic. Half a century ago most college campuses were wide-open; I could go anywhere without identification. In the new century I have sometimes been stopped by a gate guard who hadn't been told there was an open Wikipedia event that day. Also if there will be other outsiders we'll need more precise simple instructions like where's the preferred entrance gate. When it's just me I generally just wander around asking people. Not all this has to be ready when you say, let's show the event page to all possibly interested Wikians since we want their advice on the whole thing anyway. Thanks for sharing with me your perspective on this. We'd like to make this event as friendly as possible to folks who aren't part of the university, so good point about adding information about the entrance gate, etc. I'll make those changes and add info about parking too--if there's anything else you think we should add that would be helpful, please let me know. The other organizers and I are still pretty new at this -- so any tips/suggestions you have are welcome.

This new software for replies has its shortcomings including it indents too far, so occasionally I do a sourcecode outdent like this. No, it should be moved before these details are all finished. You have cleared out the Botanic Garden junk I left, and the whole job is 80% done, and that's enough to show it to our fellow editors, thereby enlisting their aid. Particularly the list of sources and other suggestions usually gets additions up to event morning and even during the session. So, it's already time to move and, if you have not changed the default Wikipedia header skin, your move function will be under the "Tools" tab.
At least you, Diane, should apply for the Wikipedia:Event coordinator right. Give my name as recommending it. That will mean two of us will have the right to create accounts without running into the anti-sockpuppet local creation limit. If the other organizers are less experienced wikians, then don't bother getting them the right. It's only important when participants show up without first making their account from another IP address, but it's one matter in which usually the majority fail to comply. So, I recommend moving the event page on Sunday afternoon. To me it seems ready for our fellow Wikians to see, criticize, and improve. Remember, it's a collaborative document like everything else Wiki, and more collaboration is better. Our experienced friends may get good ideas about tasks to be suggested to participants, resources to use, and other issues. Yeah it's kind of complex. I forgot to say it's a move to "Wikipedia Namespace" and c'mon; why does everything have to have a weird name? Well, it does. Don't worry; if we're getting new articles that are up to "Start" standard you and I will be moving them to "Main Namespace" meaning treating them as real articles that are searched by Google and seen by the world. You'll understand it the first time I do it in front of you. So, you having approved, I moved the event page myself to Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/History of Nursing in Newark March 2023 as I said above somewhere. I also did some minor adjustments to the moved page; other oldtimers will chip in and help. With any luck, they'll point out where I told you wrong. Come to think of it, I could go to Newark on a pleasant afternoon next week and chat with you about technical and other questions. And snap some pictures. Being in real life a useless old retired fellow with very little on schedule, I am ready and eager to go anywhere within short train distance, any nice day. I haven't been in Newark since the plague started, though I snapped many pictures while bicycling there in previous years. Hmm, can I park my bike safely, or is it better to walk from Penn Station? Not a problem either way. We could meet at the library, or at a restaurant where we might get a little sauce on our laptop keyboards as we demonstrate methods, or elsewhere. The more the merrier; we could make an informal "training the trainers" session. Anyway, any afternoon with good walking weather is good for me, on one day's notice. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Annual Election & Members Meeting, with in-person at Prime Produce in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, as well as an online-based participation option.

The Members' Meeting is similar to other WikiWednesday meetups, except that its primary function is to elect a new Board of Directors. We will elect five board seats. After being elected, those elected can potentially appoint more seats. We will also have a fun WikiWednesday!

Election info:

  • To run for election or to vote, you must be a dues-paying member of Wikimedia New York City, having renewed in the past 12 months.
  • Voting will be both online, via emailed ballots from the ElectionBuddy service, and in-person.
  • The poll will be open for the 48 hours between 8pm EDT on September 18 and 8pm EDT on September 20.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
