Disambiguation

I appreciate your contribution here. Maybe I miss some rules on Wikipedia, but what if there's people who come across this page from external search engine or any other external sites, how would they know that they're possibly reading a wrong page that's different from what they might really want to see? Thanks. Pelautmalaka (talk) 03:00, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

@Pelautmalaka: The article title usually helps with that issue. If they're looking for information on threads in general, then they'd usually google something along the lines of "threads wikipedia", which brings up the disambiguation page in the results, where they can browse to the article that they want to read. If they're specifically looking for the social media network Threads, then I assume they'd specify "threads app wikipedia" or "instagram threads wikipedia", which in my testing brought up the Threads (app) article.
It gets a bit more complicated than that though, so I recommend reading through Wikipedia:Disambiguation when you can. Thanks for asking, and I hope you find this site to be well. Deauthorized. (talk) 03:10, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
You know that your second sentence wasn't always the case right? Could you please tell me a clearer one?
And how could your assumption explain the case when some people might just input "threads" in search engine? Pelautmalaka (talk) 03:20, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
@Pelautmalaka: If you're talking about Google's search engine, then just searching "threads" would have some ambiguous results. They'd more than likely have to clarify their search term if they're looking for a specific article. I'll also bring up this part of the help page I linked earlier, as it has a guide on when to use hatnotes.
Specifically;

It is usually preferable not to add disambiguation hatnotes to a page whose name already clearly distinguishes itself from the generic term. However, for some topics this is a good idea. For example, Treaty of Paris (1796) should include a hatnote pointing to the disambiguation page Treaty of Paris (disambiguation), since many users might not know that there is more than one treaty with this name, and we cannot predict what external search engines will link to. In other cases, such a hatnote is not necessary. For example, Mirror (1975 film) is clearly about one specific movie and not about any of the many other meanings of "Mirror", and most users will know to type Mirror in the search box to find other topics.

I hope this clears things up. Deauthorized. (talk) 03:48, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
You should have given me this explanation instead of giving two subjective assumptions as in your first answer to my curious question. Thanks a lot! Pelautmalaka (talk) 03:53, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
I did bring it up in my first reply, but perhaps the assumptions were unnecessary. Appreciate the feedback. Deauthorized. (talk) 03:57, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Thank you!

For sorting out the mess. I should have just reported to AIV or 3rr board and gone with advice from there. I must be boulderer from now on lol. Knitsey (talk) 08:21, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

I forgot to say, the editors and ip's adding the content goes back quite a way. Knitsey (talk) 08:24, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I opened an SPI for them, so hopefully any sleepers they have should be dealt with. Whether the page should be extended protected is up to the admins. Deauthorized. (talk) 08:26, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
I saw the SPI. You're a star. Knitsey (talk) 08:40, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
