The Million Dollar Screenshot[edit]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Million Dollar Screenshot You deleted it, fine! But 80K was the daily alexa rank, not the three-month one. Today: Daily rank:18,601 Week-rank:21,298 3-month rank:94,877 But the main point is the concept: first and only website that sells real pixels. Now, nothing wrong if it is not in Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.83.215.2 (talkcontribs) 19:09, 18 January 2006

Hi, I was going to go to Wikipedia:Deletion review, but maybe we can skip the bureaucracy... you speedied Lueshi (see AFD entry) a couple of days ago. With all due respect, I don't think it should have been deleted. Obviously, "severe cruft" isn't a speedy criterion, and though I usually support "common sense" speedies I don't think this article fits that measure. Half of the AFD participants voted to keep. How about we undelete it and relist it at AFD? Coffee 17:43, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why were the articles on CFNM and CMNF deleted? I couldn't find any discussion on AfD about them. They were perfectly legitimate articles. -EdgarAllanToe 13:15, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Undelete Request[edit]

Hi. I noticed that you recently protected the deleted page Eight-burst Nebula. Despite what the content of the page may have been, this seems like a reasonable article name for the planetary nebula, NGC_3132. The deleted page is, in fact, linked to from legitimate articles, such as from the List of planetary nebulae. Would it be possible to unprotect the page and set it as a redirect to the NGC_3132 article? Thanks. Mindfrieze 16:09, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted RyanVG per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/RyanVG but there were a number of related articles that were also up for deletion within the same nomination:

Could you take care of these too? Thanks. --howcheng [ t • c • w • e ] 17:53, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well i kinda created them in the first place, i just dont like the way some of them are going, ie RacoonFox, where it looks like some one hurled a pack of skiddles and with the brodcast seperated into digital UHF, VHF, for the ill infofrmed it just confucing, that in the for the other market see blh template is unseful as well, i just want to get some ideas, and try to throw something together. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:04, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

TV Market[edit]

Hi, I have noticed that in the past you have edited or created a template for a television DMA (market) in North America, or have edited an articles about television stations. Currently their are several different styles of the template being used. Because of this i have set up a workshop to obtain input on setting up a common configuration for these templates. Feel free to assist at Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations/markets. Also while you are their, feel free to leave you name as a participant on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations as well as any comments you might have, to help wikipedia improve articles on television stations. If you know some one else who has helped contribute to these templates or you think would like to help, please pass this mesage on to them. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:41, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Election Polls %[edit]

I reverted your change to the percent symbols and leading 0's on Canadian federal election, 2006. Nothing personal, and I think they do look better with what you did. But as what you edited is only an extract from Opinion polling in the Canadian federal election, 2006, then you'd really need to do that page as well, or it gets painful adding new polls to both pages. IPA images[edit]

Hi Denelson,

You suggested anti-aliasing the png files in the IPA article, but I have no idea how to do so. The doc's in Word for a PC; I convert to PDF and then save as PNG. There are a couple filter options, but I don't see where I might have control over anti-aliasing. Any ideas?

Thanks, kwami 05:34, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'd never noticed that little triangle. Turns out I already had text smoothing selected, and under high magnification you can see that the text is smoothed in the png images - pixilation and all! The PDF is perfectly smooth, so there's something else going on with the conversion. It's first being pixilated, and then smoothed, but not enough to overcome the pixilation. Any ideas what might be causing the pixilation? kwami 07:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Acrobat 6 running through Word2000 on Win2k.
Okay, I ported it through Photoshop. See what you think. This version is 150 dpi & 160kB; dropping to 100 dpi gets it under 100 kB, but looks horrible. 300 dpi looks much nicer, of course, but I didn't think it would be worth the space - or do you think 380 kB is acceptable for an image like this? kwami 11:28, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm cutting up the 300 dpi image for the individual sections. Let me know if you think it's too much.
(I'm thinking the larger images might be useful for readers with poor eyesight.) kwami 11:55, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

revert; objections raised[edit]

¿Donde estan las objeciones? Croquant 22:38, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There was a discussion on this topic a couple months ago. Problem is, <t d n l r> represent dental as well as alveolar and postalveolar consonants, as shown by those cells spanning all three columns. If we create special cells for dentals, we obscure that fact. kwami 23:36, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of which, Denelson, should we also have the gutteral fricatives/approximants span two rows, as in the PDF image? kwami 02:43, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't see an editing box. kwami 07:35, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I would imagine that the incomplete borders were more appropriate. I made them complete at first too, but all of the other approximant symbols work as voiceless consonants with the addition of the under-ring, so there's no border between the two sides of the cell. Not that I've ever seen voiceless gutteral approximants transcribed, so I can't be sure. kwami 07:42, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that editing box: Yes, very convenient. I've already used it. Thanks! kwami 00:19, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Usage examples for IPA consonants[edit]

Hi Denelson,

I noticed you were asking for usage examples to be added to some articles on IPA consonants. The "Handbook of the IPA" contains such example words from some language for each symbol. I might add a few of those, but it's mostly just one per sound (usually with the implication that it's phonemic in the language in question, sometimes citing minimal pairs too). Have you got a suggestion of how to format/present those?

Example:

[ɳ]     Malayalam [kɐɳɳi] "link in a chain"

[ɲ]     Malayalam [kɐɲɲi] "boiled rice and water"

X image on test5 template[edit]

I'm not disputing its meaning; I'm saying I consider it useless and irritating. — Dan | talk 15:43, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was agreed long ago to use the stop hand on {{test4}} to make the user aware that they are in imminent danger of a ban. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 19:08, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would support that 100% and have been placing it on banned templates. I think we should have graded images that represent the scale of warnings — perhaps a road warning signal for 2 templates, a stop sign for 3, the hand for 4 and the x for 5. They have far more visual power than merely a warning alone, which can become lost in a long page of text. From experience I've found that text warnings without images were all too often not noticed by the person receiving them, whereas images with the text meant that they could not but notice them. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 23:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate,

You may remember the war on styles that was waged some time ago and the eventual compromise reached which meant that styles (Holiness, Majesty, Royal Highness, etc) are no longer used in royalty articles. A series of templates were created to enable users to warn other users who attempt to reinsert styles into articles that that is no longer WP policy. However a user who is trying to get a whole series of templates deleted has nominated them on the WP:TFD for deletion. I am thoroughly fed up having to defend necessary templates from the minority of deletion police on WP who seem to act as a group: one nominates, then the rest all vote to agree with them. All help to defend the necessary templates in the styles series gratefully received. Thanks. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 19:04, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Protecting the FA[edit]

Hi there. The daily FA should not be protected, as a rule, unless there is something extraordinary going on. WP:PPol indicates as much, and WP:SEMI says the same. Additionally, it rather runs counter to the spirit of WP:SEMI which does not seek to reduce anon editing in general, only seeking to stem a current, serious, problem. Raul654 has a page somewhere that admonishes against applying any kind of protection to the daily article. Thanks. -Splashtalk

Template icons rfc[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to apologize for turning the icon rfc into a poll. I was unaware of the "not a democracy" and "polls are evil" guidelines at the time. I've edited my comments to try and encourage consensus discussion. --Muchness 21:35, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish with your edit, but I agree that hardcoding the image to 300px is not the best thing to do for all cases, particularly when the image is smaller than 300px. However by introducing a new field for size, all the infoboxes currently in use don't have their pictures resized at all -- leading to some very large infoboxes. Fixing this would involve going through every page where the infobox is in use, and adding the field; or assuming that users will wise up and fix it themselves. I'm changing it back for now; please use Template Talk: Infobox animanga to discuss such a potentially disruptive change. - mako 03:24, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CBC[edit]

Tony Burman[edit]

Thanks for your interest in the CBC: a lot is going on right now, especially with the election and re-branding, so it will be good to have an Editor who can catch misleading information. Personally, I think we need a "CBC News" sub-page, but that would be a big edit that I wouldn't want to undertake without first having a fairly detailed discussion. As for your question about Tony Burman, however, the short answer is "yes." There's more detail on my talk page. JTBurman 22:41, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Penitentiary[edit]

Hi,

Regarding the IPA transcription, the word penitentiary isn't used to refer to prisons outside of the U.S. I added AHD symbols because Americans tend not to use the IPA and because IPA symbols don't display in many browsers. The addition of IPA symbols only confuses the people that need to know how the word should be pronounced. I'm sure that this is probably a case for which the rule you refer to was not meant.

Primetime 22:29, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understood that. What I'm saying is that the rule should not be applied in this case, as the pronunciation aid is useless to anyone outside of the U.S. The rule is meant to help international readers, but in this case, it does not do that. So using the IPA in this case would not be in keeping with the spirit of the rule (i.e., its intent). --Primetime 22:48, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I would agree with you in almost any other case, except this one. --Primetime 22:50, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thank you very much for the SVG versions of these two flag images. Could you try commons:Image:ICRC Logo.png, commons:Image:IFRC_Logo.png and commons:Image:Red Lion with Sun.png as well? I reckon that the ICRC_Logo.png and Red_Lion_with_Sun.png might be difficult or impossible to convert to a good SVG because of the letters in the first and the lack of simple geometry structures in the second, but maybe I'm wrong and you can do the trick. Image Tagging Image:Bssm1.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bssm1.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. Re: WWV[edit]

G'day. You seem to take exception to me placing the abbreviation USA after Colorado in the article WWV. I did it for the following reasons.

1. It is convention to assume that your reader does not know geography. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28country-specific_topics%29 which states the convention is "Item" of "Country" as the preferred way of referring to things. 2. It could be construed as arrogant that everyone knows that Colorado is in the USA and therefore it doesn't needed to be stated. 3. The addition of USA simply makes the article more informative, not less informative. Further it is an accurate statement. Therefore I cannot see the need for its removal.

I'd appreciate your explanation. Maustrauser 08:39, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you not consider it an abuse of your Adminship to lock this page? You have not discussed your refusal to allow the country to appear after the State. I have politely asked you to provide and explanation, which you have not done. I waited several days for your response, and without one forthcoming I added USA to the article. You then reverted my change and locked the page. I would appreciate your explanation other than "Everyone knows where Colorado is." I have copied this to the article Talk Page in the hope you might reply. Maustrauser 11:26, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted in Colorectal Cancer[edit]

Denelson83, I'm inclined to simply remove the innappropriate tone flag in the Deleted in Colorectal Cancer gene article, but I'd also like to know why it was tagged in that way. Having written and edited many formal documents, it's not clear to me exactly where I lapsed in formal tone. Formal tone is surely something that rises above mere definition, but perhaps some critical suggestions would help. If the innappropriate tone flag was dropped by a bot, then the bot needs to be fixed. Criticism is always welcome, but it's better when it's accurate and specific.

I'm having significant misgivings about the admins of the Wikipedia after reading Aaron Swartz's recent articles about the writing, and editing, of Wikipedia. Why did you flag the article for innappropriate tone?Niels Olson 20:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
