WikiCup 2010 September newsletter

We are half-way through our final round, entering the home straight. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) leads at the time of writing with 1180 points, immediately followed by Hungary Sasata (submissions) with 1175 points. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) closely follows in third place with 1100 points. For those who are interested, data about the finalists has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/finalists, while a list of content submitted by all WikiCup contestants prior to this round has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Submissions. As ever, anything contestants worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Despite controversy, the WikiCup remains open. Signups for next year's competition are more than welcome, and suggestions for how next year's competition will work are appreciated at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. More general comments and discussions should be directed at the WikiCup talk page. One month remains in the 2010 WikiCup, after which we will know our champion. Good luck everyone! I have a Kirkus Review, the School Library you want, a Publisher's Weekly and a School Journal. I've downloaded them. How do you want me to get them to you? Truthkeeper88 (talk) 23:55, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Email would be fine, but how would I cite that? Thanks! Derild4921 01:52, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
I'll have to attach them b/c they're pdf files. Am sending an email now and when you respond will send them to you. I'll have a look at them and format citations in my sandbox that we can move directly into the article. How does that sound? Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:36, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Sure, thanks! Derild4921 20:48, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I wonder if you would be so kind as to look at closing the AfD for Lyneham Primary School like you did for Tharwa Primary School. I have made some attempts to improve the LPS article and it seems to have consensus that it should be kept, but it has been up for deletion for nearly ten days now. I'd close it myself but as one of the contributors to the article I thought it might be a conflict of interest. Thanks! Gillyweed (talk) 08:33, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the copyedit. DragonZero (talk · contribs) 01:53, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Flag of Bhutan

I appreciate your efforts at Flag of Bhutan, as much of the text was imported from non-English sources that we have paid entirely too much deference to. But I think several of the edits did not improve the article (over-use of passive voice, in particular, makes the prose mushy); and in some cases the edits led to ambiguous or actually incorrect readings. So I have had a go at a copy-edit myself, reverting some changes and preserving others -- and rewriting a few sentences entirely. Cheers, -- Elphion (talk) 05:51, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Sources included

Dear Friend Please remove the request for removal of this article [1]. Already includes verifiable sources. Thanks--Sylvio Sant (talk) 00:00, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

If you differ from my opinion you may !vote at the AFD with a reason why it should be deleted. Derild4921 00:12, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
Dear Friend I'm not disagreeing with your opinion. I have presented only verifiable sources that were missing in the article. So, I see no need you to put it to elimination. Cordially--Sylvio Sant (talk) 05:01, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

An update from adopt a user

Hi there Derild4921! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Passive voice

Hi Derild - this is a confusing set of edits to follow. I can't tell whether the edit removing the passive voice were removing edits you introduced. I think in this diff [2] there's a little overuse of the word "was". It's important to show who's doing what. In other words, for active writing, someone or something is the subject and the subject acts on the verb. In the passive the subject is absent. The example I like best is in Stephen King's book On Writing where he uses a passive sentence that's something like this: "The body was moved from the sofa to the kitchen." The question is who's doing the moving and why is the body the subject. Instead it should be: "Myra and Fred moved the body from the sofa to the kitchen." Hope this is helpful, and don't hesitate to ping me whenever you need. I still need to have a look at your cites for the sources I sent. Will get to that very soon. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 14:28, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Derild, thought I'd add another example that my English teacher used last year to demonstrate passive voice: "The dog was kicked by me" is passive, and "I kicked the dog" is active voice. So that's an example of passive voice where the subject isn't missing. Brambleclawx 14:34, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

I've made some changes to The Hunger Games article regarding some actresses who have recieved a script and expressed intrest in the role of Katniss, and about one parent who requested it be removed from the school curriculum. Could you please look it over before I request the article for reassesment? (it is still at a C) Thank you,--Glimmer721 talk 02:05, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Everything looks good, but make sure to add in the source publisher as well. I don't have access to the websites so you'll have to do that. Otherwise, I'll make a few changes in the lead to fix it up, it's pretty much B-class now. Maybe even GA. Derild4921 02:21, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Okay. Then I'll request it. By the way, is there anything we could add to the themes section? I also found something interesting, but I was told it was not enough to put in its own. (seen here.) Could I put this somewhere else? --Glimmer721 talk 01:12, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
I wouldn't go for GA quite yet. Some copyediting will be needed, try submitting a request at WP:GOCE. Themes might be able to be found in reviews in the others books which look back at the first book. Derild4921 01:25, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Epic Horse

Hey Derild! Great job with Epic Horse. I just wanted to point out that you probably should have used the "move" function, rather than copy-pasting... Brambleclawx 16:05, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

{{Uw-c&pmove}} Brambleclawx 16:08, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)It's not necessary when they're the only author (I think), and I think Derild uses his sanbox for a lot of things, not just Epic Horse. I see this method employed regularly, actually. The only negative is that is increases his userspace edit percentage and lessens his article space edit percentage (if he cares about this stuff), but it's not important and it's the quality that counts :). Airplaneman 16:09, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)x2:I was thinking about that, but I wanted to keep my sandbox rather than having it as a redirect. I also had a lot extra information about the sources on the bottom and I wanted to keep those just in case. Derild4921 16:10, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
BTW, why is the page at Epic Horse series? Should it not be just Epic Horse? And good luck with the DYK nom :) Airplaneman 16:14, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Not sure...I wasn't too sure on what to name it at first since each book is a stand-alone novel that's just part of a series. Looking at the other series articles it probably by called just Epic Horse. Derild4921 16:17, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)It's your sandbox! I didn't realise that. I guess it's fine then, since you're the only editor anyways. Brambleclawx 16:18, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Specify major edit for The Lost Hero?

Thank you. --Glimmer721 talk 14:43, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Why would you propose a page for deletion mere minutes after it was made? Give it at least a week or two to develop. Also, I was told that any player who's been on an active roster in the NFL is notable enough to have a page created. RevanFan (talk) 00:06, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was just any BLP without any citations. So for those cases would I use a tag for no citations? Derild4921 00:08, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I guess so. I'm not really up on that stuff, but that sounds like it would work. Maybe ask Eagles24/7. He's an admin and NFL article expert. RevanFan (talk) 01:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Citing sources

Hi Derild, I feel bad for not following up with you, although I promised I'd teach you how to do this. Here Be Dragons includes trade publication sources - such as Kirkus Review. The place they were retrieved from isn't important - what's important is that someone can find the information in a library or on a database. The best thing, I think, is for you to follow the citation styles I've used here. I believe I used cite journal and filled in all the parameters, which can be found on the Ebscohost citation page. Adding the issn is also helpful because it allows the source to be found just about anywhere. Sorry about the delayed responses these days, but I don't mind at all that you ask questions and I'll watch your work for you. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:14, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the help, I'll start trying to convert the references soon. :). Hopefully you'll feel better soon as well. Derild4921 01:23, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

backlog stuff

Hi Derild4921. It looks like you're already hard at work eliminating backlogs with a bunch of different groups. Can we ask that when you do, that you log it to the Contribution Team? You can do so at Wikipedia:Contribution_Team/Backlogs? It takes just a few seconds, and would be a big asset to us. If you could also encourage people at other backlog-reduction teams to do so (and join the contribution team), you have no idea how happy that would make me. Thanks! SWATJester Son of the Defender 20:53, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm mainly active at WP:GOCE which has many members so it would be a better idea to tell everyone on the main page talk and the current drive talk. Good luck. :) Derild4921 02:50, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
