Your username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. You may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the policy to not edit in a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Welcome[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I have to say I disagree with Mandarax about your username. I've been diving long enough to remember that nitrox was called 'Devilgas' (amongst other things) before its widespread acceptance. We have a project called WikiProject Scuba that you may be interested in joining. By the way, thanks for adding the info on MV Lucy - my favourite wreck. If you ever have any problems, please feel free to drop me a note on my talk page. --RexxS (talk) 16:47, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with your username is that in your very first edit, you linked to www.devilgas.com. The username policy lists "kinds of usernames that are specifically disallowed", including "promotional usernames" which "are used to promote a ... website on Wikipedia." That's understood, but I'd rather AGF for now. 13 subsequent good edits shows we need to be welcoming new editors like Devilgas first, and worrying about them learning WP:COI afterwards. We can always correct text, but losing new editors is harder to rectify. --RexxS (talk) 20:14, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. (That's why I left a note here rather than reporting the username to WP:UAA.) MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 20:27, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First post - i'd just got back from the red sea, having dived the Salem Express for the first time in 10 yrs, checked the info here and thought that updated info & photos may have been useful to other readers. If you feel that these non commercial links are unnecessary, then feel free to remove them. username & website - i extensively use devilgas in many forums, and will remain doing so where i can. the devilgas domain was registered by myself many years ago for displaying my diving images and other diving related randomness (as RexxS has already said, devilgas is the slang term for the breathing gas nitrox when it was considered voodoo & i was lucky enough to register it before anyone else). as my photography interests expanded, the site has moved in different directions. the only 'commercial' stuff on there is local rugby & football images, which i didn't see as a conflict of interests. --devilgas (talk) 12:54, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because your username, Devilgas, does not meet our username policy.

Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} on your user talk page. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you feel that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|Your reason here}}, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. -- Cirt (talk) 21:45, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Too close to current name. — Daniel Case (talk) 14:41, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will have no issues with the UNC, however, please confirm that you will use no additional references or links to the devilgas website(s) from this point forward, and confirm that you have no relationship to them. As there can be confusion (as already has occurred), this is a better safe than sorry for you, as any future additions will result in another indef block. Cheers.
