Wikifying the List of theorists[edit]

See my note on the talk page - it's more than just wikifying. -- kosboot (talk) 23:00, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Got it - see my response there! Devin.chaloux (talk) 23:24, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, now you see the problem when there's no way to indicate (i.e. absence of links) whether the name has been done. We've been working on the same people. I'll let you go ahead. We'll all have to arrange something on the talk page so as not to duplicate each other's work. -- kosboot (talk) 19:31, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, sorry about that. I figured I could go ahead and plow through since I figured you weren't online. Do you want me to start from the bottom? It's not a big deal... Devin.chaloux (talk) 19:35, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I started from the beginning and got as far as (but not including) Walter Odington. I was just going systematically from the beginning. I can do any part of the list - just let me know what area you want to work on. -- kosboot (talk) 19:43, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Before I was starting, I was just checking how far you got from before. I noticed a few holes and plugged them, but otherwise, it looks pretty good. Start from where I just finished up - Ghiselin Danckerts. I'll start from the bottom like I said before. Sorry about that :) Devin.chaloux (talk) 19:45, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No prob. -- kosboot (talk) 19:49, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A belated welcome![edit]

Sorry for the belated welcome, but the cookies are still warm!

Here's wishing you a belated welcome to Wikipedia, Devin.chaloux. I see that you've already been around a while and wanted to thank you for your contributions. Though you seem to have been successful in finding your way around, you may benefit from following some of the links below, which help editors get the most out of Wikipedia:

Also, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page, consult Wikipedia:Questions, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there.

Again, welcome! Crazynas t 04:04, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why thank you! The cookies are delicious! --Devin.chaloux (talk) 04:06, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :), so that part above was a standard template, but this is personal, I noticed you're editing pretty fast, which is fine, but might raise some eyebrows. It's also what brought you to my attention as I'm a RC patroller, just a friendly reminder to use edit summaries when you edit even if it's as simple as adding cat, German music theorists it is very helpful in sorting the good from the bad when patrolling, since spammers and the like are less likely to summarize. Anyhow, happy editing, and again welcome to the project. Crazynas t 04:16, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Message received. We were just adding the categories - but I understand now how what I did could look incriminating! Anyway, we just finished our massive project of adding categories and banners. My apologies :) --Devin.chaloux (talk) 04:28, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not incriminating, so much as interesting I always try to assume good faith, also if you have a project like that again you should check out Auto Wiki Browser as it makes changes like that less tedious. Cheers! Crazynas t 04:34, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough! Yeah, it was a little difficult to peruse through that (though I wouldn't have been able to register with that program yet! I'll check it out in the future. That should, hypothetically, be the last project as extensive as that one was. Thanks for all of the advice though - good to see there are people out there keeping us honest. --Devin.chaloux (talk) 04:38, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just read through WikiProject Music Theory talk. You've taken on quite a project! Let me know if you need any help of the more technical nature, been a while since I've powered up my AWB. Remember to delegate (you can't do it all), and I hope your tenure proves productive. Crazynas t 16:25, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

....I think we're going to need a bigger mop:
  • 132 articles still unassessed

Archiving[edit]

Hi Devin. Can I deal with archiving first and get back to you about the 'To do' list?

I've just fixed Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music theory/Archive 1 so you have a red link for a new archive. Each time you make a new archive you need to add a {{talk archive navigation}} tag to the top of the new page. (Let me know if you have any problems!)

Some points:

1. I usually archive 2 weeks after the last posting, though you can leave it for longer if there isn't much traffic.

2. Archiving should be chronological, by the date of the last posting (not the starting date).

3. A new archive should be started whenever the archive grows overlarge (say 40k) or there are 20 to 25 topics listed in the table of contents.

Let me know if you have any questions! Best. --Kleinzach 01:48, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Kleinzach! I've cleaned up the page and archived everything in order! Take your time on the To-Do lists :) Devin.chaloux (chat) 02:48, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To do list[edit]

Maybe you've already seen Wikipedia:To-do list? What would like the 'To do' list to do? Should I do an example for you on a sandbox page? Let me know how I can help with this. --Kleinzach 02:09, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Wagner article is in need of some help[edit]

We're in a bit of a pickle in the Wagner discussion page. The issues concerns Social class (sociology) and the phrase supposedly common Germanic past and has now been dismissed by some editors as inconsequential. Furthermore, the name Other interpretations in the article dismisses the general review and broader Wagner analysis to a subcategory under Controversies (mainly the topic of anti-Semitism). Please help. Just take fast look and maybe help in the balancing act. Thank you

  • In his own era he furthermore provided the newly emerged middle class with a medium to transfer its familial and political conflicts into a myth of supposedly common Germanic past.
(In the introduction, removed as non consequential)

Hey Devin[edit]

Just thought I'd say Hello on-wiki. Awesome to see you've taken on WikiProject Music Theory, I didn't know you were a fellow Wikipedian until today! MyNameWasTaken (talk) 04:51, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks man! Yeah, I got started in it this summer. At the moment, I'm just managing the project but there are a few pages I will probably tackle over my spring break! Devin.chaloux (chat) 04:57, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Devin -- Thanks for correcting me on my issue with the Subtonic article. I very much appreciated your response. With the explanation from Jerome_Kohl I am now better informed and since his edit to the basic definition, hopefully others will be spared my confusion. Thanks for all you do. BobbyBoykin (talk) 10:43, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, welcome to Wikipedia! That's an easy subject to confuse, because all intuition would lead us to believe subtonic is the first note below the tonic. I've made the mistake before (a long time ago). Let me know if you have any other questions! Devin.chaloux (chat) 10:53, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the welcome! I do have some other suggestions, contributions, or request for clarifications with regard to the music theory project. Please see:
(In both cases the history/diff should tell the story.)
Please let me know how to best bring my concerns to your attention. For instance, should I edit the talk page, and then notify you here before editing articles? Thanks BobbyBoykin (talk) 19:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Settle down. See WP:MERGE. Are you asking me to undo the merge? If so, you might want to actually ask, and if you are trying to get someone to do something for you, you might simply try being pleasant as that may increase the chances of them doing it for you.

You finish your message by saying "You continue these unjust actions without reason" yet you do not describe more than one action and you don't describe any actions that could even be unjust, nor do you describe that one action (merging the two pages) as unjust. Thus I am confused by your baseless accusation. Hyacinth (talk) 00:54, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(So I don't leave you looking through an entire policy page, "Leading-tone chord" was a stub, with, "minimal content that could be covered within a page about a broader topic," that being "Diminished triad". Hyacinth (talk) 01:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Sorry if I haven't seen everything you've done in the past 3 days to be a direct attack on the goals of Wikipedia:WikiProject Music Theory. I understand you're an administrator. I understand you do a lot for this community. But I do not think you realize the damage you are causing to the community. Would you merge Jupiter with Planets? I think not. Please, before you continue such drastic moves like the merge you did, it would be in your best interests to
  1. Consult the person who made the page
  2. Consult the project(s) that oversee the page
  3. Follow the proper guidelines for WP:MERGE and WP:DELETE
You are getting caught up in the semantics of the whole situation. Maybe I have used a bit of hyperbole but at the same time, you continuously disregard the opinions of experts in the field. Us, associated with WikiProject Music Theory, are trying to improve the pages for a multitude of reasons. We are not actively destroying or creating useless pages. I understand we're not a governing body of the pages associated with the project; yet, we encompass a group of individuals with special interest and knowledge in the subject. We're the people you want editing these pages. Please, just be aware that your actions are deterring the mission statement of Wikipedia. Devin.chaloux (chat) 01:07, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you looked at the pages? Per WP:MERGE Diminished triad has all of your content from Leading-tone chord.
Keep in mind that you and I could both be experts or trained monkeys, and neither of us have ways of verifying that.
If you think you are trying to improve an article or subject, why don't you describe how, instead of attacking me with hyperbole? Hyacinth (talk) 01:19, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have seen that it has all the content. There are more diminished triads than the leading-tone triad (i.e. the supertonic diminished triad). Second, I know you're not an expert because these edits you're contesting points that are really indefensible by anyone with working knowledge of the subject. Third, how about you let me make the edits that I suggest without you tampering with them so that I can in fact improve the article. Lastly, yes, the article was a stub. But it was created yesterday. I had every intention on adding to it. The page was created in WP:Good Faith. These are things you're completely ignoring. Devin.chaloux (chat) 01:39, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there are more diminished triads than the leading-tone triad. This is exactly what justifies the merge. Again Leading-tone triad is a specific instance of the broader topic, Diminished triad. Nothing was deleted. Hyacinth (talk) 02:36, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, according to the other pages with functioning chords, it belongs with the scale-degree. This is the reason I created the page, because this is unclear. I have proposed a rewrite of the entire scale-degree template in order to standardize this and avoid this problem. I find it an agreeable solution. I hope you do to. See WP:MTH. Devin.chaloux (chat) 02:42, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hyacinth now says that he was told not to revert the page. Maybe his English is not that good. -- kosboot (talk) 01:14, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is a specific instance of the broader topic... which is why we have sub-topics within a single article. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 16:56, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal[edit]

I am interested in your thoughts about the following proposal:

  1. Merge diminished triad and diminished seventh chord into diminished chord (currently a dab page);
  2. In the new article, create a sub-section called "Leading tone chord" describing that it can be a triad or a seventh chord;
  3. Leave leading tone chord as a redirect to the sub-section described above;
  4. In all scale degree related places, clearly mark the Wikilink to the redirect.

I firmly believe this is the most professional approach to the issue and should also satisfy all parties. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 17:05, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for offering this. I find this reasonable. -- kosboot (talk) 17:41, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also find this very reasonable. In this case, how do we move forward with things like tonic, dominant, subdominant chords as well? Devin.chaloux (chat) 17:52, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Diatonic function seems like the perfect umbrella for all these. The seventh degree subsection may open with {{main|Leading tone chord}} (will point to the redirect, which is OK). Hearfourmewesique (talk) 20:45, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem like a very appropriate umbrella article. I gotta admit I wouldn't have thought of the name of this article, but I'm not inclined to argue after looking at WP:EW. -- kosboot (talk) 21:32, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, never acquainted myself with this page. This is a very good solution. Then, when cleaning up the scale degree pages, we can link it to subsections in the diatonic function page. This makes a lot of sense. Devin.chaloux (chat) 22:57, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mission statement[edit]

What is the mission statement of Wikipedia? Hyacinth (talk) 01:21, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Read what Wikipedia is about. This is a community created project. You're hijacking several pages with your personal agenda (apparently against me) seeing that you cannot accept the fact that what we're trying to do is in good faith and actually improving this website. Devin.chaloux (chat) 01:41, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Asking you why you would prefer one thing over another is not an attack, is not unjust, and does not indicate a conspiracy. You have no reason to think I knew who created the page when I merged it. A question and a merge do not indicate a pattern of actions against you, or any pattern. Again, settle down. Hyacinth (talk) 02:32, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then be more careful in using your administrative powers. That's all I ask. I have proposed a way to condense the pages of these chords and scale-degrees on WP:MTH. I would like your opinion. Devin.chaloux (chat) 02:40, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I wrote on Hyacinth's page, if a page is bannered by a project, that means that only the project (not an individual) can decide the fate of a page, and that must be arrived at by consensus. I asked Hyacinth to revert the page to what it was before the merge. -- kosboot (talk) 17:20, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Bob! Devin.chaloux (chat) 17:32, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hyacinth now says that he was told not to revert the page. Maybe his English is not that good. -- kosboot (talk) 01:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we need to reconstruct these scale-degree pages. Leading-tone triad should be merged with Leading-tone and not Diminished triad but all of the scale-degree pages need to be reorganized and rewritten. For the time being, as long as he keeps his distance and doesn't overstep his authority as a Wiki Admin, then we'll be fine. I've got a few close friends who are Wiki Admins who are keeping watch on the situation, so hopefully it'll cool down. Devin.chaloux (chat) 01:25, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, very reassuring to hear. Thanks! -- kosboot (talk) 01:53, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
if I may be so bold as to venture a bit of humor -- perhaps the answer is somewhere between what is Just and what is Tempered... BobbyBoykin (talk) 19:26, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your feedback[edit]

Hello Devin.chaloux, I understand your situation better and It seems to me that the admin is doing his job incorrectly. I'm sorry that you have to deal with ridiculous admins. Have you had gotten another Admin to resolve this problem? Webclient101 (talk) 05:03, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Devin.Chaloux, sorry for such a late response. I wil be honest and say I do not have the full knowledge of fixing this situation. But if I were you I would contact a admin here ----) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_administrators/G-O, let me say that some of this admins have not been active for some time. I'm sorry I couldn't help you, good luck!

Welcome back![edit]

Yes, welcome back! Yes, our friend is still around, but it is possible to steer clear of him. Definitely not one to be ready to discuss things, but again, that shouldn't disuade you - there are enough who are ready to tackle some project (hopefully out of his sphere of interest). -- kosboot (talk) 04:06, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks kosboot! I'm thinking about tackling some history of theory figures since I just took the sequence this year. It will be good studying for the comps. :) Devin.chaloux (chat) 13:46, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Go for it! -- kosboot (talk) 14:16, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Diminished unison[edit]

I have proposed that Diminished unison, which is now just a redirect, be deleted. This thing is like a fungal growth, it just won't go away. I think we need to burn it off forever. I hope you agree. Please feel free to join the discussion. [[1]] Cheers! BassHistory (talk) 07:14, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
