AFD and proper referencing
I didn't mean that the AFD never would have been nominated if the referencing had been done properly. I meant that it would have speedily been kept if the central creator of Fireofox had had the refs supporting his notability more visible. There are alot of AFD's to work on out there, and the last thing we need is an excessive lengthening of those which are very cut and dry. VanTucky (talk) 15:29, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

In South Africa it says that "the high Drakensberg mountains, which form the south-eastern escarpment of the Highveld, offer limited skiing opportunities in winter." Nice job expanding the stub. It still looks skimpy on bringing in the references which show it had a widespread and prolonged effect. I think there were newspaper editorials critical of Jim Ryan and Birkett, the prosecutors in DuPage. There is a Scott Turow book in particular which helps to show this is not the average murder case. There are several where I've noted that they say it is a very important case in relation to the Illinois death penalty reform (the Frisbie book near the beginning). Definitely want to be scrupulous, since one of the prosecutors already sued the Chicago Tribune for libel, and since Dugan is to be tried. This case really seems like a classic example of how what starts as a crime story expands into the questioning the nature of the justice system, effects on state politics, and forensic technology. It is notable for its 23 years of coverage on a variety of fronts rather than for a flurry of stories over a few days. Edison 19:56, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- Oh yes, exactly. I lived in Chicago during a good part of the last 25 years and it was a constant other-shoe-dropping situation. I was appalled that one of the State's Attorneys involved became Attorney General (Jim Ryan (politician)) and even more so that it was with widespread endorsement and acclaim. The libel case was very specific (at least as concluded) -- the Tribune made an egregious error in reporting on what happened inside a grand jury. Dear Dan Hartung, I'm trying to tidy up some free software related topics and categories at the moment. An individual who is a kernel hacker is therefore a free software programmer and therefore a computer programmer. I think he should only be listed on the deepest category which fits. Categories which involve the location or other aspects (like »computer programmers in Australia«) are not affected by this consideration (as long as there are no categories like »computer programmers in Queensland«). --mms 07:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I'm glad you explained your rationale. Looking at your recent history I was concerned there was removal of categories before prodding which could be interpreted as a way to avoid oversight. - Yes, most were overreaching. I was reading all those poor bio-stubs for hours and thought Wikipedia should not have article of this standard. But as explained in the discussion at the AfDs the article itself can be valueable if the subject is notaceable even if its content should be completely rewritten. I noticed your attempt to move the article in question to a better location; the user who moved it back (Mikkalai) seems to have a vendetta against me merely because I nominated it for deletion (which I have withdrawn). They've also undone some of my various Copy to Wiktionary tags on other articles. If all your where asking for was an administrator to look at it, you're right, I'd have no problem with this. But you state in the notice: "Questionable unsourced material about living persons should be deleted. Anyone can do this." and given this pages history of recent deletion vandalism, that is what I object to. Lets see how it goes, but I see little basis for what you are are asking for, most on the AfD page also don't, AFAIAC, it is redundant. 64.179.49.62

I'm certain I am not as well versed as you in the ways of the Wiki, but based on your comment on the articles discussion page "I make no judgement because I know too little about the subject" was why I asked you to look at the citations and newspaper stories, instead of judging them because they looked negative (which frankly, they are, yet they are fact). If anything, instead of alerting the admin, perhaps you could add to the article to balance it out relative to the criminal charges and plea deal. Asking for an article or portions of article to be deleted simply because you do not like them is not grounds for either a AfD or BLP. You added a "+importance" tag to this article. I don't understand your reasons. The article makes several claims to notability, eg -
- period Victorian building retaining most of its original features.
- hosts a notable drama festival, attracting acts from across the UK. It is a winner-of-winners type of festival, with most acts having won something else to get there, although the article doesnt state that.
- hosts Victorian-themed events during Llandrindod's Victorian festival.
- hosts a weekly Music Hall through the summer each year. This is one of only a few Music Hall productions in the UK, although the article doesn't state that.
I would appreciate elaboration on your reasons for adding this tag; and whether you would remove the tag if the extra information suggested here is added to it. Bards 11:41, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- Those are all sort of vague and none of them has sources. Notability isn't just being a nice old building (I'd love to do articles on all the nice old buildings in my city), it's being e.g. "one of the best surviving examples of its style in Wales" (hypothetical quote). Is it a listed building? Is it a named landmark? If the festival it holds is notable, we should have an article; if it isn't, holding the festival isn't a real claim to notability. These are all nice things, but they don't really satisfy WP:N. A quick Google shows that there are sources for a better article, I suggest you bring some of them in as citations (and read our notability guidelines). --Dhartung | Talk 11:49, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- A lot of wikipedians are doing just that: writing articles on all the nice old buildings in their town, eg. see Category:Buildings_and_structures_in_Cardiff. If you have a problem with our nice little theatre, you'd better stick tags on 10s of 1000s of others. I think you are interpreting WP:N way too harshly. I put the tag on it because without any references it violates our core policy of verifiability and reliable sourcing. Opinion on new UBC/Bush nazi dealings articles
Hello. I have restarted the article on Union Banking Corporation using only primary sources (newspapers of record, government documents, etc.) as starting points. The non-primary sources in the previous version of this article (and the Prescott Bush article) are not reliable and poorly researched, in general. Deletion review
I urge you to think again about the implications of saying that A7 means no actual notability, rather than no claim to notability. Every admin on WP has a different idea of what amounts to actual notability for people, and we'd have chaos. DGG (talk) 15:32, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Unicode characters
Thank you for your insightful comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Circle of commas—I had wondered why the HTML character reference (҉) did not reverse text direction, but why other uses of the character did. There is another article with a similar name, in which you might be interested. I had redirected it to Unicode control characters (consensus seemed to be in favor of doing that), and in review, the last non-redirect revision of the article seems to be wrong. Carlton was repsonding to some added information about the different Tony Pierce AfDs (the GNAA initated them). I deleted that content hoping Carlton would delete his response, but so far he hasn't. Afd Noel Gray
Hello and thank you for your contribution. May I, respectfully, comment upon the links which you cited as "Notable" and "Role". To the former, the 'Powerhouse Museum' site where the 2nd and 3rd references cited are from Christopher Gray; Noel's son. The link "Role", the text on the Univ. Melb site, was frozen several years in order that the editors were freed from constant harassment by C Gray. I was closely involved in the development of the Telectronics company, and a good friend of the late Noel Gray. Sadly, some 13 years after Noel's resignation from the company, he and son Chris elected to rewrite history in a private publication " Telectronics - The Early Years". Certainly, Noel's contribution in co-founding and funding the initial years of Telectronics is worthy of recognition by way of a Wikipedia article; the problem is that while I and several others who have the necessary knowledge, and can maintain a NPOV, our close association could be grounds for dispute. Can you reconsider your opinion about credible and independent sources? I've specified 5 sources for you:
- The Dutch Rock & Pop Institute
- www.lambiek.net is the biggest online bio-library about European comic artists.
- When you type electric guitar magazine on google, the 7th hit is modernguitars.com
- Oddmusic.com is together with Experimental musical instruments (magazine) the most reliable and famous source about experimental musical instrument (typ this in Google and you'll see they are hit 1 and 2).
- Spunk.nl and it's related newspaper NRC Handelsblad
Merging Moonlander is, to my opinion not a very good idea, because the instrument is made by me and not by Lee. Merging it with Yuri Landman is also not a good idea, because the text is about the guitar and not about me. The reason why I started a separate topic about Moonlander, is because it is a different musical instrument and not just a custom built guitar like Brian Mays instrument. I wanted to explain how it exactly works.
I understand the COI-problems and I no longer add info except refs and sources and actual facts on these topics. Most of the time I only start topics (which is a COI, yes), but I never revert when I get too enthousiastic, hopefully this will satisfy you a bit. I think people learn something from my contributions.
