Bonjour and welcome to the first WikiProject France newsletter!! It should become a monthly special of our project, but until the next issue, here are some points to consider for the month:

External map links[edit]

Hi! Thanks for creating new articles in Wikipedia. I noticed that they all have external links to map sites, in addition to the coordinates. Have you seen that when the {{coord}} template is used, it's possible to click on the coordinates and get a selection of map services appropriate for the area? To keep Wikipedia neutral and not support any single service over others, such links shouldn't be added to articles directly, and there is an active project for removing them from all articles. Is there any way you could clean them out from the articles you've created? Hi - Yes, I've loads of links to map sites on the French communes I've copied / translated from fr:wiki where the links seem to be standard. I'll cut them out in all future editions. It would be a bit tedious to do manually, but shouldn't be too hard to have a bot do the job, as all the links are in the external links sections and each on a single line. French Communes - Somme[edit]

Hi, I notice you are creating articles on communes in the Somme region. Would you be so kind as to add wikilinks to the Réseau des Bains de Mer and Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme articles as appropriate? Awesome! I'd love various pictures of the Nungesser/Coli monument from different angles, plus anything around that's to do with L'Oiseau Blanc or Lindbergh.  :) Will you also by any chance be in Paris? I'd like a photo of the Nungesser monument outside Le Bourget airport, too. French communes[edit]

I would think both WikiProject tags should be used. I had a sense that the Commune Wikiproject was less prominent than the one about France, so I wasn't sure it was necessary for that one to be added, too. By all means do if you have the time. I was also thinking that the reqphoto's should be finetuned into a Pas-de-Calais category; France is a very big country and it would be confusing to sort most villages together, don't you think? Thanks. I thought it was time it was standardised. Keep up the great work with the French communes. I tackled some the other day. When I've wrapped up Nepal I'll have more time to add infoboxes to France. I've noticed though you had to start many of the sub stubs again. Shame we couldn't have done it from square one with a bot which added infoboxes, details and references automatically. But at least we are getting places with hard work. What's new?[edit]

  • The project has recently experienced a complete redesign. The Outreach department has also undergone a major expansion, and this newsletter is the result of that.
  • The review department is currently under development, with several new proposals underway. Internal peer review had begun on the page of the project's Review Department. The department currently provides a centralized platform off all currently open reviews throughout the project (Featured Articles, Peer Reviews, Good Articles, Articles for Deletion, Categories for Discussion, etc.)
  • A new task force has been introduced: the Paris task force. Any users interested in contributing to the taskforce can join on the project page.
  • There is a current discussion about merging the French Communes WikiProject into ours. This communes project will be organised as a task force.

Manuel Bonnet[edit]

After reading your translation, I'm inclined to agree with you about his notability. Would you care to do a rewrite of the article, as I'm fairly certain the current article highlights nothing of actual importance about the man (and quite likely at least one detail about someone with the same name).   • "right" tributary looks important
  • "up to" instead of "towards". As I understand it, "towards" is just a direction, but the river flows in the commune.
  • "confluence" instead of "junction", more geo-centered and river-centered IMO

I have never given it much thought as to whether a river joins another on the right or left. The concept isn't Anglo-Saxon, IMO. The French refer to the Seine's left-bank (Sorbonne etc) but it's meaningless to me (and probably others). N.B. '...off the right bank' doesn't sound good at all, IMO. Hi. The 2 are OK, but my preference is for at in this context. In a sentence, I might write or say either "At Paris, the Seine is ..." or equally "In Paris, the Seine is ...", but I (and most others?) would always write or say "the Authie meets the sea at Etaples", then, just to add to the options available, I'd often use "through" as in "at Hesdin, the Canche flows gently through the commune". Are you OK with my sentence It is a right tributary of the Saône into which it flows at Marnay. I think it's a good way to avoid the right problem. The context is here to avoid a misunderstanding (incomprehension ?).
I saw you worked on communes where I created a section Geography with this sentence : The commune is traversed by the river Foo. I think it doesn't look very english. What's your opinion ?

I agree - I never use it. See above (Hesdin). The French verb "traverser" translates in English as "to cross" or "to pass through". (voyez fr:wiktionnaire). But I would use flows:
The river Foo flows through, or flows past, or flows between (two towns/hills(etc) either side) are all fine. In one or two of your earlier contributions, where it applies, I have changed the text to read "the river Foo forms part/all/some of the commune's northern/southern/northwestern(etc) border".

I've taken to writing something like 'An area of farming, forestry and goldmines, comprising of a main village and several hamlets' (or see examples Gentioux-Pigerolles or Féniers) - this implies that a commune is not necessarily just the village(s) it's named after, but more. Smart solution, which explains the stuff. In my example, Saint-Maurin is the only village in the commune, so I can't write something like the main village lies on the road.... FYI: re templated interwiki ref[edit]

Hey, I just wanted to drop you a note that I've created a standard template to provide interwiki references. To recreate the line you described here, you would type

{{iw-ref|fr|Communauté de communes Aubusson|September 12, 2008}}

which results in:

you could also put oldid= for the revision of the French Wikipedia page from which you've taken the data, for the most solid attribution possible. You should probably transclude the template rather than substing the raw code or typing it manually, so that if we ever need to maintain these types of refs they are easily located. hope this helps, –xeno talk 13:51, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll use that from now on. Oldid= doesn't work too well (assuming the oldid is the datetime stamp from the last fr:wiki version) as it's in French.
Mm, no, oldid must be the revision id. For example if you were translating the most recent version of fr:Alette (seems your example above doesn't exist!), you would first click "Permanent link" on the Fr.wiki page, and then copy the value after oldid=. Eg,
{{iw-ref|fr|Alette|April 29, 2009|oldid=38280739}}

result:

Yes, all the old ones. I can get the bot to replace them with the appropriate {{iw-ref}} code (they won't have the oldid, but the date will be there). This way the language can be standardized across all articles. Example: [7] –xeno talk 03:01, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, of course. I contemplated this the other day. Perhaps a tweak in the language. I think it's better to have the date the article was consulted and moved into the en.wiki. Yep, I never had any issue with the language you were using - my goal here is to simply have some way to track all the articles which reference another language (via whatlinkshere of iw-ref) With the most recent tweaking of the template you could now use either the date you incorporated the information, or the last edit date of the article. So the difference would now be that, were I to use the date of my incorporating into English from the French article, your template would always point to the latest version of the French article? Still seems very similar to what I was doing in the first place, though outside the iw-ref template . Anyway, whatever the decision, I'll go along with it. If you use oldid= paramater it will be pointing to both the revision as of the date you incorporated AND the current revision (see Alette example above). You could use "boundary", but I'd always use "border" for physical/geographical locations.
"3 miles south of ..." is correct. You can say "3 miles from ..." but never "3 miles south from..." - just sounds awful ;-)

I find that my bot is editing a lot of articles about French locations to which you have contributed. You may find it helpful in future edits to note that Roman is a disambiguation page—in most cases, you probably intend to link to Ancient Rome. I have seen what you did on Vieta. It's marvelous. I'm ashame not to have listen more carefuly my english teachers. Don't blame me for that, i was studying mathematics. I think there is still a lot of works to do... I do'nt know how many time it will take. I think you'll succed to do it (with others contributors, i hope). I don't know if that work is such interessting for english nor american people... Are the historical details more interesting than the (new) point of view i have developped around the importance of Vieta comparing to Descartes, for instance ?
