Units of measurement[edit]

Hi, please read WP:UNITS for Wikipedia guidelines on units of measurement. Most relevant for you: "In non-science UK-related articles: the main unit is generally a metric unit..." (there are exceptions which don't apply in this case.) Thanks. --Mr. Vernon (talk) 23:00, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, thank you. It makes it clear that imperial units are to be used in some contexts, especially if it was that way before or if editors reach agreement to use imperial. So there is no excuse to go around converting everything to metric. Dkr1d9fs (talk) 17:46, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware that you have been systematically reverting my edits to articles where the unit order has been brought into line with WP:UNITS. Firstly, I understand that you might disagree with the guidelines, but the correct course of action is to air your objections at the WP:MOSNUM talk page instead of arbitrarily reverting valid edits. Secondly, I would suggest you read WP:HOUND. Mixsynth (talk) 09:04, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you were systematically metrifying articles about iconic UK buildings and monuments. Metric units are incongruous as the main unit in such articles, and when I see them I change them back again. There is nothing in WP:UNITS requiring such articles to use metric as the primary units, as indeed it states that "If a disagreement arises with respect to the main units used in a UK-related article, discuss the matter on the article talk-page and/or at MOSNUM talk." If you disagree, raise it on the talk pages. As for "hounding", that won't fly where my only objective is to preserve the integrity of articles relating to such culturally sensitive articles. Please leave imperial units as primary in such articles and don't go around dogmatically changing them all. Dkr1d9fs (talk) 19:56, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, I am neither "metrifying [sic] articles about iconic UK buildings and monuments" nor doing so "dogmatically".
  • With "respect" you are doing both and now being condescending too. "Metrify" is a verb meaning to convert into or adopt the metric system. Recently you have done that to at least Nelson's Column, Lord Hill's Column, Greenwich foot tunnel and Big Ben and not because it made the articles any more interesting or informative, but to imperiously enforce your own controversial view of what a Wikipedia guideline is recommending.
From WP:UNITS:
In non-science UK-related articles: the main unit is generally a metric unit (44 kilogram (97 lb)), but imperial units are still used as the main units in some contexts, including: miles for geographical distances, miles per hour for speeds, and miles per imperial gallon for fuel consumption; feet/inches and stones/pounds for personal height and weight measurements; imperial pints for draught beer/cider and bottled milk.
Reading this, do you understand the reasoning for my edits?
  • Yes. You have misread or misunderstood the guideline and perhaps do not appreciate how incongruous the result is when metric units of measure are used in descriptions of British imperial monuments or buildings.
Were my objective simply to "metricate" for my own dogmatic reasons, I would be changing all miles into kilometres and stones and pounds into kilograms, or removing imperial conversions altogether. I'm not doing that; I'm applying the guidelines.
  • You are pushing as far as you think can be excused by your interpretation of the guidelines - claiming to be working within the "letter" (although not the "spirit") of the guidelines.
I'm aware about "footnote [4]" regarding unit-related disagreements, but not only are the guidelines clear enough so as to show that my edits are not merely a result of "strong metrication-related views", all instances of recent "disagreements" have been initiated by you as a result of you joining Wikipedia as an editor only a matter of days ago and setting out almost solely to track and revert my edits.
  • I saw your blatant change to Greenwich foot tunnel, saw that it was not mandated at all by WP:UNITS and wondered what else you had done.
Since we clearly have a disagreement, let's try to resolve it. I've already told you that the objective of my edits is to apply WP:UNITS guidelines; could you explain:
1. How your own objective of "preserving the integrity of culturally-sensitive articles" is consistent with these same guidelines; and
  • The guidelines, although not exactly clear or explicit, recognize that for some UK-related articles imperial units are still appropriate and that the primary unit should not be changed just because the guidelines also allow a metric primary unit.
2. How you define "iconic UK buildings and monuments" and where the guidelines specify that imperial primary units should be used for them?
Buildings which are symbolic or emblematic of the UK and the British Empire. If they don't fit into the guideline "but imperial units are still used as the main units in some contexts" category, nothing does.
