Please remove my block...I don't know why I've been blocked, I have not recieved any comments or warnings of anything I have written relative to a possible violation that would necessiate a block...please advise, and remove the block. I had one possible copyright infringement issue, but WIKI cleared it up accordingly... thank you....

Rancho San Pedro[edit]

I have written excerps from several copyrighted sources for citation / validation purposes to relate the facts as best I can, to reach as many people as I can, about the early days of california....I think it's imperative that this information, from copyrighted sources, be explained in this Wikipedia format. I don't believe I've been in violation of any copyright laws, because like pictures, history is public domain and passed along through documents that are public record. Several sources site all the info I have stated in creating the Rancho San Pedro article, and I've put forth a lot of effort researching this material. The copyright law states that you can not entirly copy one's work, but if you copy a few sentences, and are not doing so for personal profit, then you are within the law. Please consider this arguement, as I would feel that like so much of California's rich history has been convoluted, and passed over, this article should remain, and be edited and discussed accordingly... Except for the one short paragraph that I left in the article, everything in the Rancho San Pedro article was copied verbatim from http://www.dominguezrancho.com/history/. That is a direct copyright violation that is much too large to qualify for a fair use exemption according to the US copyright laws.

Also:Look at the bottom of that page: "©2007 Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum. All Rights Reserved." Those last three words are very important. It means "no copying, period!". The underlying information on that webpage can't be copyrighted, but that specific arrangement of the facts definitely can be. For that webpage, the copyright status couldn't be clearer.

Since the basic facts can't be copyrighted, all you need to do is completely rewrite the information and it will no longer be a copyright violation. It would be best to cite two or three different sources for your information.

The photo on the page, however, is no longer copyrighted since it's older than 1923, and is therefore in the public domain (unless it had never been published before). To be safe, however, I'd try to find the same or similar photo on the LA County Library website, or the Library of Congress website. The LOC website, especially, is usually very good about providing information on the copyright status of an image, as well as other information on the image like the name of the copyright registrant.

Note: When you do exerpt a small amount of text from a source and use it verbatim, you should always use quotes for the text, and include the reference directly after the text.

Finally: Because it is a copyright violation, it needs to be removed from wherever you've copied it on the Wikipedia. It is still a copyright violation when it is on Talk:Rancho San Pedro, instead of directly in the Rancho San Pedro article. Please quite adding verbatim copies of the text from the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum website. ^Blank ^Verse 03:41, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I could make one request . . . standard format here is to spell out numerals that are the first word in a sentence.

May I request that you write: "Thirty-seven years later . . ." instead of "37 years later . . ." Of course, you still use numerals (over number 12 or so) in the middle of a sentence, but I'm practically positive that the standard format on Wikipedia is to use words to spell out all numerals which are the first word(s) in a sentence.
