Dear Ms. MacRae:

I see through a Google search that you are the representative for the musical group GiveWay, which you have recently posted an article on. I have placed a delete tag on the article because as it is written, we can't take it. I apologize for any distress or upset this may cause you.

Firstly, as you have a connection with the band, the article is a violation of a number of Wikipedia principles meant to prevent even the illusion of conflict of interest.

These include WP:NOT, WP:ADVERT and WP:COI.

People who are personally involved (either as employees or adversaries) with the subject of an article (or are the subject themself) are asked not to create or edit articles about those particular subjects (though they are by no means forbidden to edit Wikipedia in general). This is to make sure that a neutral and balanced article is created organically.

Further the press release that you have posted as the article seems to come from an unfree source (either you must personally hold the rights to release the material, or it must come from a public domain or GFDL source), meaning that it can't be accepted as an article for Wikipedia.

If the band is notable enough, other editors will gladly make an article about them. Unlike elsewhere in the world, others will toot your horn for you, so to speak. :)

I hope that this doesn't sour you on participating as a member of the Wikipedia community.

Your HD question

I have made an offer of assistance on the Help Desk regarding the above article and Wikipedia's policies in general. However, I see from the above comments that there is a significant COI issue involved here. I would still be willing to assess the notability, or otherwise, of the band, which is subject to the key policies of WP:BAND, WP:N, WP:V and WP:RS. But I would suggest, as has been pointed out here, that you let the natural process of Wikipedia take its course. Once a subject is notable enough, it follows that one or more contributors (existing or new) will want to write about it and be able to do so with sufficient independent sources. Wikipedia is an encyclopædia and must always remain so, which requires strict thresholds for anything that approaches promotional material. Regards, Adrian M. H. 23:08, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Firstly, I just have to say: don't forget to sign your posts. Anyway, thanks for the message. From your description, and the content of the article, it looks as if notability will probably not be an issue. If GiveWay is notable, then it deserves an article. Bit early to promise anything until I have the time/energy to go into this in more detail. Please don't think that anyone will assume that you have an ulterior motive when they express concerns about promotion/advertising, but Wikipedia gets snowed under with articles that are far more blatant attempts at that, which means that it has to have strict policies. Unfortunately, a lot of articles that fail to meet one or more standards slip through the net, but that's another story. Please don't think that Wikipedia is complicated; it is if you want to know almost everything about it and contribute in every possible way, but to create articles, you need just a broad understanding of a few key guidelines, about which I can go into more detail tomorrow if you would like more advice. Trust me, it's worth it. Wikiedia is not meant to be fun, per se, but it is a rewarding and enjoyable experience from which you get out as much as you put in. When I have more time, I will do some preliminary editing to improve your article and we can work from there. Hi Donna, thanks for the messages. The deletion log shows that it was deleted quickly in response to your blanking of the page, which admins will take as a request to delete it. But, I have just been doing a quick bit of Googling and I reckon that this band is certainly notable enough for inclusion; in which case, they deserve an article. If you're happy for me to chip in, I'll start a new article later today, based on the sources from Google, and you're welcome to contribute to it. Basically, as long as the material is sourced mostly from third party sources (ie, don't just use the official website) then there's no big issue with conflict of interest or notability.

Glad you liked my user page. I must admit to making far too many edits to it! If you'd like to get some content on your page, have a look at User:The Transhumanist/User page design for ideas and tips, and Wikipedia:WikiProject User Page Help/Trading Spaces if you want to get the decorators in!

By the way, I reverted the blanking of this talk page because you're not supposed to blank talk page content. It's OK that you did that, because you weren't to know, so don't worry about it. Hi Donna. Got some user page content underway, I see; good start. It's absolutely fine, but as you asked about what's encouraged or frowned upon, that's covered by Wikipedia:User page. Really, it's just things like using it as a soapbox for controversial/offensive views, or using it as advertising space that is not allowed.

I've started working on a new draft of the GiveWay article at User:Adrian M. H./Sandbox#GiveWay. I could use your input with a few facts, so have a look and feel free to add any relevant info. For the sources, you can just give a link after the text and I'll sort the formatting out. I tried to view the official site, but it wasn't available. Regards, Adrian M. Hi, me again. With regard to getting more sources, has the band had any editorial coverage in newspapers or specialised music press that are in themselves fairly notable? I noticed that one of the albums has been reviewed in The Scotsman, which is a good start, but other editorial content would be ideal if possible to thoroughly demonstrate notability by the guidelines at WP:NMG. Regional or national tour info is useful as well, as are appearances at well-known major music festivals. Also, very important: Is the name written as GiveWay, Giveway or Give Way? I have seen all three variations in source material. From Wikipedia's viewpoint, redirects can be created for alternative spellings if necessary. Adrian M. H. 16:36, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
