Commander UK Strike Force removal of text

Did you check the reference when you removed the detailed list of ships etc regarding the 'Green Eagle' deployment? The list is *fully* cited, though I admit I clearly did not cite the second paragraph which I'll have to re-source before I readd. Please check references more carefully in future.

With the thousands of litres of metaphorical printers' ink which WP editors have spilled over the Royal Navy since the Armada, anything about 'very dated' in regard to anything since 1700 or so sounds a bit hypocritical as well. Regards Buckshot06 (talk) 14:44, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

NHS trust / board navboxes

Hi,

I noticed that you have been editing some navbox templates that I have created for NHS trusts and boards (e.g. Template:Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) by adding the word "hospitals" to the titles, and moving some others from "Template:XXX" to "Template:Hospitals in XXX".

Personally, I do not agree with this. For example, I have added these navboxes to the articles for the trusts/boards, and not just the hospitals, so it is better if the title is just the name of the trust/board as this means it can be used for both trust articles and hospital articles.

Furthermore, some of your moves do not make sense to me from a grammatical point of view. For example, you moved a template I created from Template:NHS Highland to Template:Hospitals in NHS Highland. I don't think this is correct as "NHS Highland" is not a geographical area, but rather an organisation, so the hospitals are not "in" the organisation but rather run by them. Template:NHS Highland hospitals would make more sense, but as I said, since I want to use these templates on the trust articles as well it would be better if they were at Template:NHS Highland.

Please let me know what you think of this.

Hi - I actually don't have strong views on this. I am trying to achieve consistency. If you look at "Category:Hospital templates" you will see that the Scottish ones are now all "Hospitals in NHS ...". I don't think it matters as long as we have consistency. Best wishes. List of Hospitals

Hi, Yeah I would like to help and expand, I am guessing it is more a list of current hospitals rather than ones that have closed, as I did remove the 2 Bristol ones that are now closed, Bristol General and Frenchay. I have found a good source for bed numbers is CQC reports, which tend to list bed numbers by trusts and hospitals, so could add them as references. Mark999 (talk) 20:59, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi - Thanks for that. I confirm that this list is a list of current hospitals. I have been removing defunct ones as I go through the list. I have now removed the London tables in the list as I am convinced the bed numbers there were unreliable. Some Trusts do publish their total bed numbers but do not publish a breakdown and I find that the information in the CQC reports is inconsistent (sometimes they give bed numbers and sometimes they don't). I don't think this list is the right place to insert the bed numbers. It is probably best to focus on inserting reliably sourced bed numbers in the infoboxes of the articles on individual hospitals. Dene Barton Community Hospital

Just in case you care, I have proposed Dene Barton Community Hospital for deletion. As the only one of 12 community hospitals in Somerset to have its own article I don't see what is so special about this one. Either we have none, or we look to create the others. Hi Dormskirk. I am trying to deal with revisions for the James Gordon page. I have prepared a new paragraph for Military Service and it is in my Sandbox ready to go. As always I have at least two references incorrectly formatted. Would you be kind enough to correct any mistakes I have made and then copy and paste it into the JG page, in place of the paragraph already there? Much appreciated if you would. There's much more to come, but the edit pages do terrify me, so I will have to prepare the next bit in the sandbox too. The link here [2] sates that the 80th Regiment arrived in America in August 1779, so is there any way of including the ‘August’ in the prepared paragraph too, because the newspaper only states 1779? It would be a big job to improve all three reference sources on both the James Gordon and Charles Asgill pages, but if done, then direct links to the passages in question would be immediately visible. As of 2019, it is the largest cigarette maker in the world based on net sales.

BAT has operations in around 180 countries, and its cigarette brands include Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike, Pall Mall and Rothmans. BAT’s acquisition of Reynolds American Inc. in 2016 created the world’s largest listed tobacco company. By acquiring Reynolds, BAT also acquired US brands Newport, Camel, and Natural American Spirit. The company does not necessarily own the rights to all of these brands in every nation they are marketed.

BAT manufactures and sells vapour and heated tobacco products, modern oral products, as well as traditional oral products such as snus and moist snuff. Its brands include Vype and Vuse and glo.

BAT has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It has a secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. BAT plc ordinary shares are also listed on the New York Stock Exchange in the form of American Depositary Shares (“ADSs”).

In March 2020 BAT announced a new commercial direction, focusing on generating “an increasingly greater proportion of [its] revenue from products other than cigarettes.”

In 1997 BAT brought its participation in the sport to new levels with the purchase of the Tyrrell team for approximately £30 million. The team raced as Tyrrell for the 1998 season before being renamed as British American Racing (BAR).

In 2005 a European Union (EU) directive was brought into force which required national governments to legislate to prevent tobacco sponsorship.

In 2004 BAR announced that technology partner Honda had purchased a 45% stake and in September 2005 it announced that Honda would be buying the remaining 55% stake. The team raced as Honda Racing F1 Team in 2006, the last year of the Lucky Strike sponsorship before leaving the sport. For the 2006 season, the team was renamed as Honda F1 Racing Team, with BAT only advertised at a couple of races. All links between the two companies were severed for 2007.

In 2019 McLaren signed a multi-year deal with British American Tobacco. McLaren's announcement of a "global partnership" with BAT brings the company back into F1 for the first time since Honda succeeded BAR. In late 2019 BAT and McLaren announced the signing of an enhanced partnership deal that saw BAT become a Principal Partner of McLaren for the 2020 Formula 1 season.

Hello again Dormskirk, after a gap of seven years. We used to comment on construction history articles.

I saw your reply on Sor William Arrol and will have a look at the early history.

I have published an article on Harry Neal, a one-time prominent London builder. I am happy with the text of the article, largeley sourced from the official history but it is the first tiime I have put in a new article as opposed to editing existing ones and I suspect I have not got all the protocaols right. I notice that it does not come up properly in a search. Would you mind having a look at it for me.

Many thanks for that. I did wonder about referencing each para but I thought it seemed a bit repetitive. On a point of detail, Harry Neal Ltd was not the developer for the Tobacco Dock,only the contrctor. The actual developer was the the family in the form of a separate company.

Dear Dormskirk,

You may recall that I’ve been in touch in the past because of your interest in the FTSE100. I work for communications advisory firm Brunswick, and I am acting today on behalf of HSBC and their global CEO Noel Quinn. I can see that you helped establish a new entry about Mr. Quinn following his appointment in March. Noel Quinn is a British banking businessman who is Group Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings plc as of March 2020, having succeeded John Flint. He initially assumed the role on an interim basis in August 2019.

Prior to becoming Group Chief Executive, Quinn was Chief Executive of HSBC’s Global Commercial Banking division from December 2015. He became a Group Managing Director in September 2016. From 2011 to 2015 Quinn was Regional Head of Commercial Banking for Asia-Pacific, based in Hong Kong.

Quinn joined Forward Trust Group, a subsidiary of Midland Bank, in 1987. Midland Bank was acquired by HSBC in 1992. He led HSBC’s acquisitions of Swan National Motor Finance and Eversholt Leasing Ltd, becoming General Manager of each business in turn.

He has since served as Head of Specialised and Equity Finance at HSBC, Group Director of Strategy & Development at HSBC Insurance Services North America, Head of Commercial Finance Europe, and Head of Commercial Banking UK (2008-2011).

I don't think there is quite enough information there at the moment to justify a split right now. However, I do think it has enough notability. The appropriate procedure would be to build on Watford#Watford_Colosseum until you have, say, twice what is there at the moment, then split it off to a new article, leaving behind a summary of about half the size that is there now, which would likely be about the same size and content of the lead of the new article you'd create. I'd be happy to help out - and to help tidy up the Watford article, which looks a bit messy and cluttered at the moment, and with an inadequate lead section. SilkTork (talk) 16:36, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

"Facility"

Hallo, Keswick Museum is on my watch list so I saw your recent work on the page, and that led me to look at The Moot Hall. I see that "facility" is your favoured term to use in the lead sentence - a glimpse at your contributions led me to Morley Town Hall too. I note from your talk page that public buildings are one of your specialities.

I wonder if we can find some other phrasing for these articles, as describing buildings like these as "facilities" doesn't seem to me to contribute much information for the reader, and it conjures up associations with public conveniences. I can see that it's preferable to avoid repeition as in "Keswick Museum is a museum..." but honestly I think that's preferable. The "Morley Town Hall is a grade I listed building ..." would be fine too, though perhaps you avoid that because understanding it requires readers to know about the UK listing system?

Perhaps there's a wider forum where this terminology would be better discussed, like the UK noticeboard? I just thought I'd drop by here first.

Thanks for all your work - the Keswick Museum article certainly had a long legacy of unsourced stuff, especially the detailed chronology added by an IP in 2008, before I started editing it in 2013. It's a great little museum if you're in the area - and I see it reopened last week, without even the need to book. PamD 09:31, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments - yes, I also know the Keswick museum well. My preference would certainly be to avoid repetition. An alternative word to "facility" would be "institution" - I don't particularly like it because it has certain connotations in a health context (specifically mental health). Miscellaneous

Good morning Dormskirk

I have moved on from building company histories to looking at some of my books on the old trading companies. I have put in new entries on C Czarnikow, James Finlay and a virtual new one on the Harrison Line. I have also added a substantial new section on the 1974 property collapse to the Crown Agents. The Crown Agents article had previously been criticized as ”This article contains content that is written like an advertisement” but I think the main problem was that it totally omitted what was one of the biggest financial scandals of its time. In fact, the early history looks reasonable and it is perhaps the last bit on the Foundation that looks a bit on the promotional side. How would you deal with it now.

The other article I have been looking at is the old plantation company Harrisons & Crosfield, now Elementis. Would you like to have a look at that entry? I am always hesitant about doing a total rewrite of someone else’s work but it not of the highest quality and gives little mention of over 100 years of plantation. I have the official Company history which was published in 1990 and there are accounts filed at Companies House. It would be tortuous synthesizing that into a couple of pages but it could be done. What do you think?

I remain surprised at how many company articles ignore official histories.

It already gives some useful information on how the company got into chemicals but it could do with several more paragraphs on the early history. Thanks for removing this, I hesitated over its utility but left it there out of soft-heartedness for whoever added it in the first place. The bot flagged the file for violations of WP:NFCC#10c because you replaced the {{information}} template with a non-free use rationale when you updated the file. The created a conflict because the bot sees both a PD license and a non-free use rationale, and doesn’t know which is “correct”. If you think the file is too complex to be ineligible for copyright protection, then that’s OK; you should, however, replace the current license with a non-free one instead. I’m not proposing anything. I’m trying to figure out why you replaced the “Information” template with a non-free use rationale when you updated the file. Was there a specific reason that you did that? The bot only started removing the file from articles because you made that change and I’m just trying to understand why. If you just did it by mistake, then that’s OK and your edits can be undone. Head of the British Armed Forces

The user Marked4life seems to be adding many senior officers without stating 1) are they really given letters of appointment by the queen; 2) Are these appointments like service secretaries - he makes mistakes, and deputies to the main services significant to list? 3) Note even sure if just OF-8s get the letters, what about OF6s,? 4) What is the point listing like Commander, Joint Helicopter Command? Might as well list division commanders and AOCs. 4) What about joint/NATO officers like Deputy SACEUR?

What are your thoughts? Would you defend?

Harman Lines, Warminster

Impressed with your work on Wiltshire military sites. Do you have any sources for Harman Lines? Shows on Google Maps just east of Waterloo Lines. Probably too small for an article but would be good to expand Warminster#Military presence.

I would like your support or clarity

I am not close enough to this issue. It seems to rest around whether the section is describing the "Field Army restructuring in July or August 2019" or "Field Army restructuring in September 2020". The London Regiment

A user removed the higher commands in the article the London Regiment (1993). Is it under 11th Infantry Brigade or the London District as per this [7] ? Do you think the 'Part of' part should include 11th Infantry Brigade - the reference in the article don't specifically state so.

Bradford & Bingley

Hello.

Other than very recent events, and issues, there was no real history for this Society, nor for Bingley B.S. or Bradford Equitable B.S. I have put in some historical content but I have a problem with the article heading for what is shown as Bingley Permanent B.S. You can see the explanation on the Bingley Talk Page. I don't know how to change a main page heading - could you look at it?

Incidentally, the more recent material could do with some editing and elimination of material of minor importance.

Building Societies

Good Morning

I have moved on to the history section of Building Societies and it is striking how little early history is included in the articles. One might find the best part of 150 years of existence is summarized in a line or two, followed by lengthy sections on demutualization or one-off contemporary issues. Much of this tends to be referenced to internet citations from news media. There is rarely any use of the range of company histories that are available.

I am slowly working my way through the alphabet and put in early history sections for four societies – you can see the list of these from my home page. I am currently reading the Coventry Building Society History and if you look at that article you will see what I mean – the first hundred years in six lines.

These ae just general observations but I have one specific query. The Bradford Equitable B.S. has a banner saying this article does not cite any sources. I am not an administrator but I now think it is now more adequately sourced – if you want to get rid of the banner.

Ramsbury Building Society

I have created a new article on the Ramsbury, fully sourced from the official history up to 1981 and then with limited data from the BSA mergers list, also cited and with its limitations noted in the text. Someoone has put in a big panel saying citations needed and it looks as if he is an editor. Could you have a look at it please.

I can repeat the same source if necessary but that seems artificial. There is very little material available on the early history of these building societies and the Ramsbury history is particulary well sourced. I am not sure why it needs to be repeated.

Help performing a merger

It is just a matter of moving what material needs to be retained from British Army Structure In 2010 and copying it into Army_2020#Background. I suspect there will be very little. It will need a line by line review of British Army Structure In 2010 to identify any useful material; after transferring the material you then blank British Army Structure In 2010. Best wishes. Hi, I was reading through Sir Charles Asgill, 2nd Baronet and you mentioned an admin sanctioning for responding to edit requests without giving other editors time to comment. This sounded very unusual to me, considering the huge backlog at Template:Request edit and the lack of editors that respond to these requests, which causes me to implement or decline edits independently because of the lack of editors in this area. I don't mean to bring up old problems, but can you link to the discussion, or send me an email with a link if you don't want to post it here? Hi - Thanks for your interest. I was not actually sanctioned - my concern is that I would be sanctioned if I do it again. To be precise and quoting from Talk:Sir Charles Asgill, 2nd Baronet "I have recently taken some flak from an admin for implementing an edit request pinged at me which was also well presented and factual...And I do not wish to be sanctioned for my second offence of responding to edit requests when other editors may wish to comment / edit the text".

The flak I refer to was at Talk:BP#PAID editing. The conflicted editor had pinged me asking me to add some comments about some environmental initiatives. My view was that the requests "were well presented and factual" and I added them. However, I was accused by the admin of allowing the conflicted editor "to write the content". The admin explained that [rather than the editor pinging me / me responding to the ping], the editor "should use the "request edit" template so that others see the request. That's how it normally works." [The implication presumably being that the request needs to get to the top of the list before it is responded to]. When I tried to raise a related environmental issue (regarding a different company) with the same admin (see User talk:SlimVirgin#Environmental issues again), explaining that "My direction of travel remains that the efforts of companies that do really good things for the environment should be recognised", another admin jumped in quoting me on a different page and stating that my foregoing view was "the very opposite of WP:NPOV, destructive of the purpose of an encyclopedia, turning it into a publication like Charity Navigator". (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Impax Asset Management Group).

I have been careful above simply to state the facts of the case. That said I am really quite troubled by all this - my main interest is in content writing and while I have taken great pleasure in responding to numerous edit requests in the past (and there is a large backlog) it is becoming really unpleasant. I have also noticed AfDs where sources describing good works are given less weight by some editors (but I do not want to express an opinion on that matter here). For what it's worth, I don't think "The implication presumably being that the request needs to get to the top of the list before it is responded to" is actually the implication. Most queues on Wikipedia aren't dealt with in strict order, and I'm not aware that edit requests are an exception. If they were dealt with in order, a particularly complex request at the front of the queue could hold up many simpler requests. Crown Agents

Happy New Year

Could you look at the entry on the Crown Agents. A few weeks ago I put in a section on the Crown Agents' role in the 1974 financial Crisis, when it was one of the high profile collapses. On January 2nd the whole of this was deleted on the grounds that it was not part of the existing organisation. In effect, this is saying that if you change the name and the legal structure, you can whitewash any uncomfotable history.

I cannot see any evidence of other contributions and I assume that this is someone connected to the Crown Agents who is trying to sanitise the history of the Crown Agents. Incidentally, the last paragraph of what remains of the history still refers to "The Property Collapse Below" !

quandary

your advice - in oz/strylia we have heritage listed items tagged on talk pages with 'historic sites' project - as we have no significant locally grown project that captures the significance of heritage listed items. It is noted that the very us bias doesnt preclude their also having other projects in the us sibject arearelated to heritage listings. Do you think it is innapropriate (on my part) to add the item onto uk and edinburgh heritage properties and categories ? I would clearly understand an argument to not include, just curious how you might look at it - I would gladly revert myself if their is an adverse reaction... I havein the past seen that edinburgh items are at times neglected - thanks for whatever you might be doing to improve... JarrahTree 10:08, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

I personally would not have a problem with this, especially if the tag was on the talk page. In the UK heritage buildings are usually easily identified because they are listed buildings so this is not so much of an issue here. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 10:28, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

I reverted your addition of the architects of the civic offices from Milton Keynes as excessively detailed for that article. If you want to pursue it, then maybe you could start a new section at Central Milton Keynes on the architecture? The architects of Milton Keynes Theatre are given in that article. For MK Gallery, they are given in footnote 18 at Central Milton Keynes#Theatre and municipal art gallery. Skyscraperpage.com says that the architects for Xscape were FaulknerBrowns. Other notable buildings include the Law Courts, the original Shopping Building (listed G2), the bus station (listed G2), the railway station, Quadrant:MK and, for prize-winning cheap'n'nasty spec building, The Hub. I am Garrett John Hickey (present US equity options trader) and former historian at Trinity College (Dublin), with a special interest in Irish or South African related army, aviation or naval matters.

IRISH in BRITISH AVIATION before 1943

In 2017, I updated the Pilots and Crew sections of websites relating to Irish staff in Imperial Airways (predecessor to BA and BOAC).

Jack Sheppard - - I found significant information relating to Senior Pilot Capt John ['Jack'] Sheppard (1899 - 1982), an Irishman who was in charge of the Imperial Airways Flying Boat squadron of aircraft during the 1930's and 1940's. (He was also my father-in-law!).

Edward Willis - - Another relation (by marriage) was Major General Edward Willis CB CMG (1870 - 1961) of the Royal Artillery. There is an excellent "wiki" site, edited by you, covering this person.

However, it ignores Augusta Barlow, his first wife (1881 - 1924), who was the mother of his son John Willis MC (1908 - 1965). She was a Barlow from Lancashire (hence the mill connection) who died in 1924.

FYI, her brother Ernest Barlow emigrated to South Africa in 1907 and (with his wife Kate) founded the Barlow Rand conglomerate, now South Africa's second largest company.
