Hi Duncanharrington! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Birth records[edit]
Hello. I think the angle WP:BLPPRIMARY is taking was that if the only source we can find for somebody's date or place of birth is an entry in the National Archives, it's not up to us to make the call on whether that's the person we're looking for. Even if we thoughtfully weigh up other biographical details that seem to match, there's always a small chance that there's a coincidence at work and it turns out to be another person with the same name, or a relative that they took the name of, or who knows what. The National Archives don't say whether a given baby went on to be famous, after all.
Alternatively, if we're quoting a reliable press source for a date of birth then we know they'll have fact-checked it to a level their editors and lawyers were happy with, and that the subject didn't subsequently ask them to retract it as incorrect.
The related policy of WP:BLPPRIVACY adds that if a person's exact date of birth hasn't already been widely published, they probably don't want it to be, which seems fair enough.
If that still seems crazy, you can question it at Wikipedia talk:Biographies of living persons. I may be misinterpreting it, but "Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth" does seem cut and dried for whether or not we should use a National Archives database search to support someone's date of birth. --Lord Belbury (talk) 19:37, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
