Punchbowl[edit]

Hi Dyddi,

A better name than "Punch bowl (Macquarie era) for the punch bowl article might be "Sydney punchbowl". That is what the Dictionary of Sydney calls it (DoS Sydney punchbowl). I have added it to the list of ongoing work at the SLNSW, where it is now a red link. (When the article goes live, provided it has the same title, this link will turn blue.) Whiteghost.ink (talk) 22:49, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about the multiple names. It will be solved by a wp: disambiguation link. Will explain later. Am about to board a plane. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 06:45, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can we make that plural as the Sydney punchbowls are a pair - showing different views of Sydney Cove but with the same Aboriginal group image within.Dyddi (talk) 00:38, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic work! I've never before seen a sandbox with so many references. This will make a great WP:DYK for the main page. Do you and your team want to try making the nomination, or would you prefer someone else to do it? --99of9 (talk) 08:57, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with both of the above, this is fantastic work and many seasoned veterans here would struggle to produce something so comprehensive. Thankyou so much for sharing this story with us. Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:36, 18 September 2013 (UTC).[reply]

I have nominated it for DYK. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 13:30, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback and the nomination. Glad you liked the article. Hope others feel the same. It was quite an effort, paricularly as its my first contribution. Regards Dyddi (talk) 05:37, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The references are looking so much more elegant now. We can all appreciate how much work it takes to produce a result like this. Well done! Whiteghost.ink (talk) 09:26, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the writer's barnstar. I quite enjoyed doing this article in fact.Dyddi (talk) 04:11, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I just saw this article-- really well written and a very interesting presentation of information. Also, very much impressed by the number of and quality of images. I, JethroBT drop me a line 15:13, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks JethroBT. Getting so many images approved and onboard was perhaps the trickiest part of the process - especially for a first timer - but makes all the difference.Dyddi (talk) 04:11, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions[edit]

Let me join in the chorus of welcome messages. Your work on the punch bowls is great and I hope you will add more material regarding various aspects of Australian-ordered/owned/created artworks! Jane (talk) 13:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Jane. I thought the punchbowls were such exceptional objects - particularly in relation to Australia's early colonial history - so I really wanted to raise their profile. And, yes, hopefully there will be more material of this nature to come.Dyddi (talk) 04:11, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to chime in here too... I'm giving a presentation today at the National Library for an ALIA conference on social media usage - about how libraries can use WP I'll be bringing this article up on screen as a best-practice example :-) Wittylama 02:58, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Wittylama. I would be interested in the kind of response you got if you were able to bring up the punchbowl article in your social media presentation. Im a librarian by profession myself. Regards.Dyddi (talk) 04:11, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
FYI - the DYK has been approved, and if everything runs as normal, be on the main page on Thursday at 3-11pm Sydney time.--99of9 (talk) 21:27, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great newsDyddi (talk) 04:47, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there 99of9. I would like to propose my Sydney punchbowls article for GA. Would you be willing to peer review this? regards AnthonyDyddi (talk) 03:14, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The actual GA reviewer will select themself, and can't be someone already involved with the article. But I will try to keep it on my agenda and help improve it and make comments for areas where you can improve it. --99of9 (talk) 13:10, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that.I am unfamiliar with the process. I also have some additional Sydney Cove panorama locations to add. Thanks again.202.0.106.130 (talk) 22:35, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Sydney punchbowls[edit]

Gatoclass (talk) 05:47, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is terrific stuff, keep up the great work! For GA though the sourcing needs a fair bit of work, too many external links, and the lead needs expansion but other than that its the sort that has future FA potential.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:55, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay.Thanks. So if I can make these changes the article could be up for GA/FA? Is there a time frame to do this?Dyddi (talk) 01:34, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No timeframe. First, propose for GA and implement suggestions for improvement. Then, when GA is achieved repeat. That is, propose for FA, implement suggestions for improvement. Sounds easy but requires detailed work and is a bit gruelling. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 02:20, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GA Nomination of Sydney punchbowls Suggestion[edit]

Dear Dyddi, I nominated Sydney punchbowls for GA. user:W.carter got in touch and pointed out that it is usually an editor of the article who makes the nomination. I've made no contribution to it and it is outside my area of expertise (which is photography), but I found the article informative and valuable in providing an insight into Chinese/Australian cultural interactions, and beautifully written. user:W.carter has made a number of improvements to referencing etc. but suggests that since there are references from original research, that it may have difficulties in meeting the criteria. However it is a while since you wrote the article so some publications about the bowls may be out in the public domain or have been taken up by academic journals, or delivered at conferences, perhaps by you. I'm keen to see such an excellent article, and one of such significance to Australian history, get attention it deserves. Would you be willing to revisit the article please, consider user:W.carter's comments and start it on the road to GA status? It will involve some more effort, but at least you know you can call on others for assistance! JamesMcArdle 10:08, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear James, Thank you for your kind comments and for nominating Sydney punchbowls for GA. I am able to do an update but I will be away until the end of June and so could not work on an update until July. I do have a new publication on the subject and also can identify additional buildings on the Sydney Cove panoramas displayed on the punchbowls. I could contact you on my return to Australia, if that is okay with you James. Anthony (Dyddi (talk) 06:49, 30 April 2016 (UTC)).[reply]
Hi Anthony (Dyddi), great to know that you will be able to work on an update. Enjoy your time away, and we can be in touch then. Regards, JamesMcArdle 06:59, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
