Nations at the 2012 Summer Olympics articles

Firstly thanks for you're work across these type of articles. A couple of comments to make however; adding large empty tables with lots of TBA doesn't add anything informative to the article and looks quite unsightly. It's better for now to note how many places have been allocated/earnt in text form and hide the tables from view until they can be filled in, like I've done at Great Britain for example. Additionally any places you add to the articles should be fully sourced and citation templates (not bare urls) should be used to format the references, again take a look at GB for examples. Thanks for the info. Was trying to be as complete as possible, but I take your point that tables of TBAs look a bit odd. I'm going through all nations and trying to standardise the qualified athletes into tables, I shall leave out events that only have quota places at the moment and concentrate on the others (such as shooting and table tennis) which have named athletes qualified. cheers! I'm not keen on the bold text placed at the end of many sections stating the number of qualified positions. This should be in prose at the start of the section, possibly followed by a list of events in which athletes/quotas have qualified (And The First Letter Of Every Word In The Name Of An Event Doesn't Need To Be Capitalised - it looks bizarre and is incorrect), but if its just a few athletes, like for table tennis, this is also better in prose form (Hungary is an example). Sorry if it seems like I'm being fussy and having a go at you but it's important to get the pages right early on before a flood of part-time editors start up on Olympics pages and copy what they see elsewhere - Basement12 (T.C) 11:24, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

OK I can see your point about the bold text, but that doesn't mean that summary information should be lost completely (which you've now done). Also I think that should be prose AND a list. My reasoning is that the places will eventually be put into a list/table during the games itself, so why not have a list now - plus it's an easy encyclopeadic reference to see who's in what event rather than JUST reading the text. Please don't destroy ALL the hard work I've put into these pages today - I don't mind reformatting, but you've deleted a lot of it too. Please put it back (in a nicer format if you like). The tables that will show results are very different to these lists - the lists repeat what is in the text, an odd trait for an encyclopaedia, whilst the eventual tables will have scores/results etc that are too numerous to have in any other form. If we are to have the lists (I'm not entirely against them) then there is no need to wikilink athletes already linked in the prose or to have a line saying, e.g. "Total qualified places in Shooting = 2", when that's already stated a couple of lines above. The citations also belong on the prose and not at the start of the lists - Basement12 (T.C) 11:53, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

I saw it a while ago but since that's what all these articles should end up like eventually and the work was done by and IP editor I didn't think it was worth worrying about too much. Shooting tables are wrong though as they assign places to athletes not the nation so i'll fix that - Basement12 (T.C) 13:09, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

No problem, its great you have taken an initiative to work on these articles! Keep up the great work. Also, I have a couple of pointers for shooting the athlete qualifies a quota spot not themselves. My bad I mis-read it. Also, for Korea DPR, they have requested for the last few Olympics minus Turin to be separated from Korea Republic, considering the 2012 Olympics are in London, they will be announced as Democratic People's Republic of Korea. 2012 Olympics Nation articles

I like the idea of listing athletes that have qualified with the "B" and "A" standard. However my concern is they at the end of the day they may not qualify. What do you think? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 14:34, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I have been mulling this over... Either I can continue as is, just quote the number of athletes that have the qualifying standard, or just give the maximum number qualified so far from each event (e.g. up to 3 in most events). E1tiger (talk) 15:28, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Funny you should say that, i've just started swimming (see Australia, Brazil, France)... only problem with the reference is that it's a form you fill in to get the results yourself (although it clearly states which times meet the qualifying standards!) E1tiger (talk) 14:20, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Alphabetical order

A minor point, but isn't it usual to put nations in the order of their IOC country codes, rather than by their country name in a particular language? - David Biddulph (talk) 11:33, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Not sure, but the main London 2012 page has the nations listed in alphabetical order not NOC Code order (barring some exceptions such as the Koreas and Chinese Taipei). E1tiger (talk) 12:05, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success.
